Got around to finishing this one today. It was... alright. Honestly I wasn't pulled one way or the other on this one, unfortunately. Generally Big Finish does a marvelous job pacing out four-parters - they've been doing it for twenty years, for heaven's sake! - but this one really gave me the impression it was struggling to fill those two hours. The fourth episode was the weakest in my opinion because of this. The plotting and pacing on this one really weren't my cup of tea.
I think what keeps this afloat is easily the breath of fresh air Jessica Martin provides as Mags. It's just refreshing to finally have a new companion for the Seventh Doctor and I think that easily made this release worth listening to at the very least. I'm not too thrilled that Ace is back AGAIN in the next release - couldn't we have at least had one more trilogy with just Mags before we bring Ace back in? - but seeing as I haven't listened to that release yet, I'm going to reserve my judgement until I've had the chance to do so.

Listened this week and really enjoyed. I liked the world-building, and as others have said, the Jane Austen / game of thrones aspects to it. It was one of those stories where the alien world just seemed somehow more real than a lot of other Who stories.
The plot twisted and turned a fair bit, especially in the last 2 episodes, with characters switching between goodie and baddie perhaps just a little bit too frequently. Another draft to make the motivations a little clearer and more consistent might have helped.
The dodgy science pointed out by tuigirl is a fair criticism as well, but not enough to detract from my overall enjoyment.

I have said it before on this forum and I'll say it again but the over-use of certain companions (Ace, Nyssa and Leela) is a very bad thing. No criticism whatsoever intended of either characters or actresses, but it makes the whole thing very stale very quickly. New companions bring out new aspects of a doctor's character and keep it fresh

On Episode one and have not heard the previous release...but first two episodes are fresh and vibrant and witty, love the whole courtship thing going on.Mags is a good companion to the Doctor and gives Mc Coy something a bit different to play with and he does seem a bit more bouncy in this story. Lets see if am still as positive during the next two episodes and then i will read all your comments above.
i will say something Vulpana seems a wee bit at moment like Peladon, worth revisiting in its time line.
Peter Bankole so far his vocal steals the first half of story..thats deep!

I wondered about that too! Then I imagined a thin outer shell with a very powerful gravity generator inside, more like a ship than a solid moon - like the Death Star as you mention - and the surface might even have been 'solid holographic' etc.? Easy for some species in the Whoniverse and Jaks could have promised them half the kingdoms in return; money no object. (He'd have tried to cheat them later, of course! ) That was my explanation anyway! A few lines from the Doctor could have covered it easily. The destruction was easier to explain - the Doctor did say to Lady Ella that he needed to (string of Seven's technobabble) the grenades to increase their power before he detonated them. So I guess he did that part of his plan before she blew up the 'moon'. Well, good ideas...
still, it is pretty close to "Kill the Moon" level of ridiculous if you think of it. It was a great story, but this just made me shake my head.
Lets be honest a bit more believable than THAT story. I think it would have been better placing some kind of device on one of the already existing moons. BUT this was a great tale well paced with good characters and held my interest throughout . Now i have to decide do i listen to the first or the last part of the trilogy?

Out of that trilogy, Moons of Vulpana was probably the best (also fits into the scheming 7th Doctor more). Monsters of Gokroth played on all the 'classic' Hammer Horror stereotypes and I liked it as a it harked back to Holmes-Hinchcliffe. Alien Werewolf in London - just didn't sit right for me, sorry. To visual for an audio play, for a 90s story it was very rooted in the 80s and the humour fell a bit flat. Tried to be too clever and didn't quite make it. On a plus, it was a slightly better trilogy than the previous ones.

I enjoyed this story. This was clearly Vulpana in its past, before Mags was born, and interesting for her to be thrust into a rather feudal class-based society. But there is more going on than it seems at the start. I liked the plot twists and the way it changed by views of some of the characters and their motivations.
I hope we'll have more Mags after the end of this trilogy.

On a relisten..and you really cannot fault the opening two episodes terrific world building and the Doctor very much in the background. This Is Mags’ story .I have always loved Werewolves in BF those on Vulpana those in Louis Garoux ( Eleanor Bron the Matriarch was a stand out) and those in Blood On Santas Claw. Here we have class distinctions, bloodlines and man wolves wanting what man wolves want 😂.It doesn’t disappoint as a story though i do remember the rather not quite plausible moon ending but i will forgive it because it is a strong build up with strong audiovisuals. Well in the end thoroughly enjoyable tale and the moon was a lot more believable than that horrendous TV story 😂
