Shockwave and He Who Wins{Spoiler}
Gatiss’ Master was a welcome addition to the mix, however I can’t help but feel him destroying his universe kinda undermines the Warner Doctor’s accomplishments. Also really not sure what happened to him at the end...a random wormhole?
Just finished listening to it, but haven't listened to the interviews yet. I am puzzled a bit by the Gatiss Master. {Spoiler} I thought that at the end of that Unbound series, the Master was set up as the savior of that universe. So, maybe he wasn't escaping that universe but the end of this sends him that universe for the first time? {Spoiler} At the end of Ruler of the Universe, Warner Doc setup events so what remains of his universe would be protected from cataclysm in a safe zone and left the Gatiss Master to rule in his place, with a firm bureaucracy and Parliament to keep him bogged down. Gatiss’ Master has always been native to that universe, from his debut in Sympathy for the Devil. So Anti-Genesis seems to suggest the Master let the Unbound universe fall into ruin which kinda diminishes the Warner Doctor’s triumph a bit.
I assume what happened to Gatiss Master here will be in some way clarified in Masterful, as he’s involved in that and it’s seemingly set in the main universe.
I keep meaning to revisit this set at some point, but need to be in the right mood as it’s so bleak.

One question I have about the Unbound Master... {Spoiler} Did he return to his universe at the end of He Who Wins?

He seems to disappear into a wormhole, which could lead anywhere. Maybe Masterful will shed more light on this.

He seems to disappear into a wormhole, which could lead anywhere. Maybe Masterful will shed more light on this. Masterful does state that the Master has sent out a summons to all (well, most of) his past incarnations. Presumably because the Gatiss Master was in our universe at the time he was accidentally caught up in the summons. That’s just my theory though.

Just finished this set and it may be one of the best spin-offs I've ever listened to. This was my first War Master boxset, and I'd only previously heard the War Master and the Unbound Master in Masterful, but I'm already in love with these two incarnations. Jacobi's acting never falters, and he plays the dark scenes excellently. This Master is sinister and some moments were really very chilling.
I hadn't realised going in just how dark the War Master was. The opening scene of the first episode of this set is really uncomfortable to listen to, in the best way possible, and the Master is completely brutal throughout. Briggs and Barnes write really well, and they both clearly have a great understanding of this character. Narvin and Livia's inclusion was also very welcome, as I've only heard a couple of the Gallifrey audios, but these are really fun characters, and their interplay works really well. As ever, Scott Handcock's direction is superb, and Rob Harvey's music and sound design compliments the dialogue perfectly.
It's a very timey-wimey story, but it rarely got confusing. The addition of Gatiss's Master was well-handled as well, and he fits into the story perfectly. Added to this, Gatiss portrays him really well, as a calmer Master, who's more reasonable than the incarnations from N-Space, and who isn't totally evil, but still prefers being bad. I really want to listen to his Benny boxsets now. The callbacks to Genesis of the Daleks were also thought out, and it was never just for the sake of it.
Overall, the only negative I can think of is that the ending was a bit messy, but it worked within the context of the story. 9/10.

So i finished Anti-Genesis. I was going to keep constant updates but i felt it would be better to wait till the end.
I like it. In fact i would say its good. I mean, its deeply flawed in so many aspects - the concept is silly, the writing can be pretty bad, the tone is all over the place, there was so much fan jodrell i and did i mention the writing?
Now that all sounds bad. And it is. But theres just little things throughout the set that do win you over in spite of the major flaws. Great acting - Truly superb. Jacobi was great in this - i especially loved the subtle breaking out of a rougher accent when he was getting angry that i hadn’t noticed before but it worked well. Gatis was great, my favourite outing for his master i think. The Dalek time strategist is always acted well by briggs - acting good.
A change to the formula was also welcome and solved two issues I was getting from the last boxset - issue one was that The War Master is always one step ahead and that had become kind of predictable. He would be sneaky then reveal he’s bad then reveal his plan and win. Here he is portrayed differently - he isn’t thinking clearly or being sneaky, he is just being totally evil and thus being slightly incompetent which was issue 2 for me thats this set fixed - this master was just two clever. How we came from crispy to jacobi just didn’t ring true. Why is he so good now? Well he’s not, he has his blindsides and still has a hunger for power. This is the closest the War Master has felt to being just the master and i like that, it grounds the character. And of course, whilst this is a lesser point, it does have ambition quite a lot of it, and with a better writer this could have been great.
But yeah on top of all the negative points from earlier, it doesn’t have a climax (well a satisfying one) which is annoying. Like briggs really doesn’t understand character drama at all, he writes in archetypes. I suppose technically Barnes is just as bad but i get on with his writing more than nicks but yeah its just so eye roll worthy sometimes. Overall though it was good, i enjoyed it more than i didn’t which is more than can be said for stuff like ravagers.
