With the Corsair's first appearance the latest Thirteen Doctor comic Do you think they might crop up next in some Big Finish release? What range would you like to see them in? Maybe have Cyril Nri's Shopkeeper finally confirmed to be the Corsair, as Gaiman and RTD suggested, in an 11DC? Or a new incarnation meeting the 4th Doctor and Romana? Or perhaps in one of the Time War releases? The possibilities are endless, what do you think?

It could be revealed that the Corsair went undercover as the Chair of the Governors in order to investigate the Weeping Angel cult. Perhaps they could even link it into the The Three Angels cult from Fallen Angels. Maybe it could be revealed that the Corsair was the mastermind behind bringing the Coal Hill gang together and perhaps intended to create a permanent team to deal with rift activity and such after his meetings with the Bannerman Road Gang in Lost in Time.

You know what? That could actually work! Bring in a guest appearance by, say, Rani (Chandra), and it would make for a great S2 (they might go the Torchwood way and have the next two boxsets be S2 under an umbrella title).

I was never much taken with the idea of the Shopkeeper being the Corsair. Corsair means a pirate, which really doesn’t match the Shopkeeper’s motive of putting things where they belong that he extols in Sky. Furthermore the Shopkeeper’s abilities seem above those of a Time Lord, and he claims in Lost in Time that it is forbidden for him to travel in time. I always assumed that he was simply an opposite to the Trickster. The Pantheon of Discord, of which the Trickster is a member, seems to exist to sow chaos and destruction so the Shopkeeper may be part of a counter force inspiring order. After all it seems the Trickster has been trapped outside of proper space/time somehow, so it seems logical there must have been someone who put him there.
The Corsair in an audio one day seems likely. The character is pretty much a blank slate, so lots of opportunity for creativity there. The Corsair meeting the Fourth Doctor and Romana might make a good story.

I think MeddlingMonk hit the nail on the head with this. Class in general is a great way to have Sarah Jane characters around instead of doing companion chronicle type releases, and we could have them really be developed.

Just imagine Rani and Clyde joining Coal Hill School as the new Media Studies and Art Teachers.
At least, that’s how it went in my head when Class was announced and before we knew anything about it.

Who owns the character?
If Big Finish could get Neil Gaiman on board a boxset with The Corsair would be great, but I do wonder what sort of a character he/she would be. How would the Corsair differ to River Song?
However it would be nice to have the character turn up in a Doctor Who story, especially with the Fourth Doctor. Escape from the Bank of England!
Whenever the character is mentioned, Adam Ant & Jack Sparrow both come to my mind.

Gaiman's actually got a tumblr page and on it is Eleven Things You Probably Didn’t Know About the Corsair. The "guy with the parrot" mentioned in the nested post is a reference to the Shopkeeper played by Cyril Nri in The Sarah Jane Adventures, so there's one possible incarnation floating around out there already.

I assume these eleven things are the same as the ones in the Brilliant Book 2012.
There are lots of little hints in those, such as the Doctor and the Corsair getting drunk and then waking up in the Bank of England vaults, as to what a series of adventures would be like, but would Neil Gaiman have the time and the inclination to write it?
I especially like the idea of the Corsair having a cat or parrot as their companion. I like to imagine that telepathically the animal could communicate with the Corsair. That could work well on audio and then the Corsair would be surprised that the Doctor could actually hear what the animal had to say.

I've a feeling it'd be more for a lack of time than inclination, although... The next best thing to getting him aboard for an audio series might be to request a show bible for authors to source from. I can see Alan Barnes tackling some of the more out there ideas with a very deft hand. I'd be interesting to drop the Fourth Doctor into an adventure that takes cues from Sandman. They get locked up in the Bank of England vaults after getting wasted, but they weren't the only things that did. Something piggybacked on for the ride. Originally to hijack a TARDIS or two, but in one of the most secure areas on Earth, well, it makes an excellent place to cause some mischief. (Also, apologies to xlozdob, I was skimming on my phone and didn't see the mention of the Shopkeeper in the OP at the top. M'bad.)

I love the idea of Gaiman writing a bible for a Corsair spinoff. Apart from Barnes, I'd like to see Dorney and Colgan have a crack at a story, and maybe Paul Magrs, as I feel the Corsair and Iris might have a lot in common.

It's possible - likely even - that the Captain stole it from its actual maker. A real pirate robbing a Time Lord who just likes to affect the style of a pirate (since the Corsair is one of the good ones.) He would need to have reprogrammed it a bit to make it more lethal, but that would be all in a day's work for the Captain.

Wow, these sound like absolute AMAZING and fun stories. Can we get them, pretty please? I am totally onboard.
It would be even more amazing if Neil Gaiman would be able to do it (just imagine!!!). And I do not really care about the incarnation of the Doctor (although I cannot imagine the drunken bank heist happening with 7 for some reason). Bring it on.

I did have an idea for a comedy caper called Three Time Lords and a Lady
which would involve a Heist of some kind. I've spent a lot of time considering what characters to use with The Doctor.
I've had The Nine, Iris Wildthyme, Romana, a Time Lord of my own creation, Drax and now i think i can add The Corsair to the list lol

Well that is the two female incarnations sorted, so we just need some male suggestions! How about Roger Allam in full Cabin Pressure mode, with plenty of sardonic charm. And/or Julian Rhind-Tutt, simply because I have always wanted him to play the Doctor and this seems the next best thing!

Just thought I’d resurrect this thread with all the Corsair talk in obscure news section.
There was talk that Neil Gaiman had issues with how his Nightmare in Silver turned out, so perhaps having more control over the characters, the story and the production process would make Big Finish an attractive proposition for his return to the Doctor Who universe.
