I really like what they do with Peter here. Last time was earning the mantle; this time it's all about making the mantle your own and stepping out of the shadows of your idols. It's a coming of age tale where the 'man' part of 'boy-to-man' takes center-stage.
Also, Gyllenhaal as Mysterio: A terrific performance and pitch-perfect translation from the comics. He's everything you would want big screen Mysterio to be: theatrical, bombastic, menacing yet also kind of petty and a bit myopic. He also offers some interesting riffs on Marvel hero tropes when he's pretending to be a hero: the cockiness, the paternalism, the self-deprication/snappy wit that acknowledges the inherent silliness of this universe. What's more, and this is something I was worried about; they did not skip on the trippy-nightmare stuff from the 60s stories with his illusions. They got the giant hand from the Madness of Mysterio comic (the one where he traps Spiderman in a giant carnival).

I loved it. Everything about it was note-perfect, from the awkward teenager bits to the nightmarish Mysterio stuff, to the laugh-out-loud comedy ("I can help! I'm super strong and..sticky!" will never get old ) I especially loved that first 'Mysterio nightmare' bit, when Peter thought he was going to tell Fury the truth but it so quickly descended into bouncing between obvious nightmare environs to what appeared to be real but wasn't. Brilliantly done, that. Total glee moments: 1) "I can help! I'm super strong and..sticky!" 2) JB SMOOVE!! 3) "YOU DO NOT GHOST NICK FURY!" 4) "Night Monkey" 5) The blink-and-you-miss-it Spider-Man PS4 cameo 6) "We can't wait to show you what's coming next" 7) JK SIMMONS?! HOLY EFFING EFF I THOUGHT THAT SHIP HAD SAILED FOREVER

HOLY EFFING EFF I THOUGHT THAT SHIP HAD SAILED FOREVER Ha ha ha. Yep I agree with every word. I had a great time at this movie. I liked Homecoming, but I enjoyed this so much more. And I agree with the last 2 comments, Jake Gyllenhaal was perfect as Mysterio. Night Monkey!! On a somewhat more melancholy note, my kid pointed out that it's the first Marvel movie without a Stan Lee cameo.

I guess Feige and co realised you'll never beat the casting of JK Simmons so you may as well repeat it. It'd be cool to actually see this JJ be less comic and more actual antagonist in this series as Peter grows into the working life in future films. JJ isn't just the comedy ranter, he's had some very emotional stories himself and Simmons could pull off so much. Also would that mean he's also done as Gordon in the DC Universe after what? 2 minutes on screen. After Larry Fishburne jumping ship from Superman/Justice League to Ant Man & The Wasp it really does seem more likely any Batman and Superman films to follow will have completely fresh casting.

Another detail I really dug: Mysterio has a writer on his team. I don't think they outright specify he's a Hollywood screenwriter, but it seems like it.

I really enjoyed it and the casting is so perfect. Not a weak link.
So many fun easter eggs to catch - various license plates referring to key Amazing Spider-Man issues. The various restaurant signs in Venice as "Italianized" references to Spider-Man comic writers (Gerry Conway, Brian Michael Bendis, Dan Slott). Given their namesakes' connection in the comics, it was a great nod to have Ned and Betty find each other.
Speaking of which, I appreciate the relatively sweet / tame approach to romance in this movie (the awkward hand-holding, the "big kiss" being really a little peck, even Happy and May dancing around their own spark) - very old school, but also very welcome (gosh, I feel old). While it was funny to see Flash have his live-streaming constantly interrupted (the crotch-slap was admittedly hilarious), I appreciated the tiny little nods to his home life (his sad text message about not hearing from his parents and then their not bothering to show up at the airport despite what he'd experienced on his school trip). Curious to see where that goes.
Mysterio was amazing as was his support team's back story (VERY inspired!) although I'm really ready to break away from the shadow of Tony Stark.
Cliffhanger was fantastic as was the surprise cameo (the audience reaction was phenomenal). Poor Spidey can't catch a break!

I saw it again yesterday and enjoyed it just as much, if not more. It's fake news slant makes it a pretty political film as well..

After wasting money on a lot of bad films the past few months good to have something worth seeing again.
Having accidently spoiled myself about the mid-credits scene I actually paid attention to the audience's reaction to it. The older half went wild when JK Simmons appeared but the younger half didn't react at all. Of course, ten seconds later everyone was going nuts.
I'm guessing we might finally get Kraven for the next one and I bet that USB drive of evidence the guy from Iron Man (who has to be the luckiest bit-part actor ever!) has will come in handy for Peter.
Speaking of whom; even ignoring the five years he was gone, how can he still only be 16? I know you've got the X-Men back Marvel but don't go picking up their bad timeline habits...

From Civil War till now, the in-universe timeline (from Peter's POV) is approximately 2 years 8 months - Infinity War established it had been two years since Civil War, and FFH said 8 months since Endgame. That makes Peter roughly 14 in Civil War, and biologically 16 now. The younger end or older end of 16 we don't know, but I'd guess he's closer to 17.

My main problem, Mysterio. Great villain & when he was revealed I was wondering how the rest of the film was going to play out with Spidey & maybe the world being duped until the truth is revealed. But no. Literally 5 minutes later Spidey knows the truth & it descends into the usual cgifest when it could have explored the world's need for a hero after the blip & how that weakness is exploited & then ultimately the truth revealed. Oh well, I'll probably give up on these films now.

Clearly he's the one constant across the multi-verse Awesome film. It was a little weird since I knew the penny had to drop sooner or later on Mysterio, but it did two clever things. One was, his scenes with Peter really made me WANT to believe he was for real, and two was how pitch-perfect the heel-turn scene actually was. In addition to all the cool Mysterio visuals, t was a pretty inspired move to have Peter fights drones too, since it semi-simulated a Spider battling a bunch of Flies.

So I really loved this. Really, really, really loved this. Like top 5 MCU films. However...
I was actually disappointed they didn't have the cajones to play a long game with Mysterio. I could really see an alternate universe where the Elementals thing was the whole movie and the mid-credits was a hint that Beck is at least somewhat sketchy and is playing some sort of long game with Peter. Give Peter a father figure after Tony. Give May a whole thing with Beck too since the Happy stuff seemed like it was setting /something/ up. Do an absolutely soul crushing reveal for Peter. Also Jake Gyllenhaal was way too good as the character to waste him after one movie.

That's true (especially with the mid-credits) but like... I got myself going on the idea of May and Beck and Peter getting a wonderful happy family before the good ol' Parker luck strikes and tears Peter down. You'd never believe that Peter Parker is my favorite MCU character from how much I want him to get hurt emotionally.

The possible set ups for Kraven, SWORD and maybe Dark Avengers (how i saw the final two anyway) are exciting for me
