Pretty good. I was hopeful but nervous about this. Beyond the wonderful SFX I found the TV series very deeply flawed. The efforts to tidy up the rubbish science with more modern speculative science felt a little bit clunky and overdone (secret deliveries to Area 1, and the Meta Transmission, and the Queller Drive, and...), but these may turn out to be plot points as the series progresses so no real complaint yet. Hopefully we'll find out some more now we're at Meta. The politics of the Meta Probe made better story sense, with Simmons better developed and Koenig more loyal to the mission. And obviously Alan Carter has no life if he's prepared to take on a ten year plus mission at no notice. Helena Russell is, as hinted in the trailers, a lot more shouty and sweary. This appears to be an effort to make her work better on audio. I don't dislike Maria Teresa Creasey's version, but it will take me a while to get used to her.

The evolution of Helena Russell from TV ice blonde to cantankerous healer on audio is a successful one. Nick has essentially made Russell the 1999 version of “Bones” McCoy. I was ready for Bonnar’s American dialect to grate on my nerves but taken as a whole instead of through a couple of minutes of audio trailers, I think it works well enough. All in all I think this is a truly successful relaunch/reimagining. And easily one of the best things Nick has written and directed. Bring on the series.

I'm ridiculously fond of Space: 1999 the TV series, at least the first season anyway (second season...not so much). I was hooked on the show as a young lad when it first hit our TV screens back in the 1970s, and there are still a couple of bright green Dinky die-cast Eagles lurking around the house in the 21st century. I suppose that's why I found myself sat up until 2.00 in the morning yesterday (September 13) listening to the audio version after it popped into my account. If it hadn't been any good, I would have gone to bed, but Mr Brigg's adaptation kept me awake and gripped with excitement in the same way the telly Breakaway had way back when.
While pretty darn good, it's not perfect. I agree with the post above that said there were too many reasons for the Moon being transported through space - no doubt someone had left a pan boiling and that contributed to the disaster too. Even back in the 1970s, we knew the whole thing with the Moon being blasted out of orbit and reaching other habitable planets every week was dodgy science, but those of us who loved the series went with it regardless. I would have happily done that again as an adult in the 21st century (hey, if a phone box containing a space/time machine doesn't worry me why should this?!!). The over-explaining and excusing of the Moon going rogue led to us missing out on the most powerful scene in the episode, perhaps the entire series, as Koenig has to decide if the Alphans should attempt to abandon the base and head back to Earth. To this day, whenever I watch the episode, the words "Human Decision required" send a chill through me. All heads turn to Koenig as a burden no man should have to bear descends upon his shoulders (Landau plays the scene beautifully). I was aghast the scene was missing from the audio - so much potential for resentment from the Alphans who disagreed with the decision. Ah well. One other minor annoyance: Breakaway by Nick Briggs on the cover - it would have been nice to have seen George Bellak get a mention. Other than that, brilliant, buy it.

That was one of the best things BF have released in a while. Thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. It's going to be a long wait for the next release. Is it October 2020?
It'll be good to have a top class ongoing series to enjoy now that Prisoner is ending and Survivors descended into virtue signalling man hating.

From the BF website An additional box set of four episodes will follow early in 2020, with the full cast announced in the coming months.

Urgh. The new version of the theme tune is horrible. Reminds me of the Jeff Wayne War Of The Worlds remix album. Not sure how this can be a complaint, as the sound is extremely similar to the first season theme tune used in 1975. The theme tune at the time received some criticism for its blend of both orchestral and "modern" sounds.

Looks like ‘Death’s Other Dominion’ is one of the four stories on the 2020 box set.

I don't dislike Maria Teresa Creasey's version, but it will take me a while to get used to her. I believe they tried to get shot of Barbara Bain in the second series, at one point attempting to pay her salary but not feature her. But it had been written into her contract that she had to be seen, and so the attempt failed.

The Above....
That’s good to see .They really need to do more of these for their box sets.
So you REAL FANs where do they go with the series next what favourite episodes should they recreate. Dragons Domain really was one that freaked me slightly as a youngster.

I think Nick Briggs is very much a Marmite individual, you either like him or you don't, and to be fair he did write the audio. That said he seldom misses the opportunity to promote himself !

My hope is for more original stories rather than reimagined ones. If I’m being really honest it would be my wish to see 1999 would take the Torchwood approach and do quarterly box sets dealing with big sweeping stories and a monthly range drilling down on specific characters. I really am that excited by the range coming out of the pilot episode. I’m also curious to see what writers BF brings in.
