To be released on Monday 14th December 2015! I was kind of hoping for it earlier than that. It's Star Wars week, too. It'll struggle to get much press that week.

Perfect release date for me - the Friday of that week I will be on the road for eight hours driving up to my parents place for Christmas. I was hoping to have this release to listen to on the drive.

I imagine we will have a lot of releases by the end of the week, given the holiday season!

Ever since the announcement of the War Doctor range I have been very cautious and reserved regarding it's release. I am one of those people who has never really taken to the idea of the War Doctor. Oh, I think John Hurt is fantastic, but the whole concept of this character has rubbed me the wrong way from the beginning. With that in mind, I did pre-order the first box set because, well, like I said, John Hurt is fantastic. But I've been much more excited about Torchwood and the upcoming 10DA than I have been about War.
Well, this trailer has changed that. I don't know if I'll ever take to the idea of the War Doctor, but my goodness that sounds great! I am now more excited for this story than I ever have been. Good work, Big Finish!

I wholeheartedly recommend George Mann's excellent Engines of War, probably one of the best New Series Adventures novels and it does a far better job with the potential of the character than The Day of the Doctor did. Nicholas Briggs is wonderful on the audiobook too.

I knew if anyone could change my very strong feelings regarding War, it would be Big Finish!

Those with a decent memory may recall that Elkawho and I normally agree on 99% of everything Who-related. Predictably, I felt the same as she did about the introduction of the War Doctor in DotD. In that regard, I read Engines of War and found it boring, straightforward, and shallow. I pushed on to the end, having been assured by others that the second half was better than the first, but it truly was never my cuppa. That said, I was originally willing to give the BF version a shot, because of how they've redeemed other doctors & companions. Unlike Elka, though, I actually did not care for the trailer, and I've decided I'll not be picking up this series after all. So by that logic, Elka, maybe you'd like Engines of War after all. I reserve the right to change my mind after release time, of course.

It certainly fixes the complaints of there being more generic conflict than time war in the episode - and there's some great continuity and wonderful portrayals of the Time War. I don't see how anyone can not find it their cuppa.

Well, that had a lot of ooomph! It makes a rather odd contrast to the Radio Times clip. Hmm, I have actively avoided reading this book because of the feelings I've stated above. I don't see how anyone can not find it their cuppa. Just don't go into it expecting an Alien Bodies, and you should heartily enjoy it. It reads like a novelization of an imaginary TV story, but one that I would gladly see broadcast.

I don't know if I'll ever take to the idea of the War Doctor, but my goodness that sounds great! I am now more excited for this story than I ever have been. Good work, Big Finish! Although I loved the concept of a outcast time war doctor from the start (for several reasons which I won't bother listing in tedious detail) and pre-ordered the first box set as soon as it was released (John Hurt's performance was certainly one of my favourite things about DOTD) I remain both cautiously optimistic, and a tad worried myself, Big Finish have clarified in a reply to a comment on the announcement on the Facebook page that these adventures take place many years before DOTD, but start around the midpoint of the War Doctor's life, and as such I'm wondering how far they will push his 'not the doctor but a warrior' character traits in contrast to what we watched on TV, it's certainly going to be a difficult balancing act-on the one hand he's previously been established as an warrior who wants to end it all-but a old, weary one who has run out of options and wasn't quite the boogeyman we thought he was (though I think that was one of the main points of DOTD, the doctor is at heart a good man), on the other hand the timewar has long been thought of as a colossal near mystical tragic conflict, and the many new listeners who will be tuning in, will likely be expecting something very different and darker to what we normally see in who...but since these take place in the middle of War's lifetime I'm wondering if this marks the beginning of his descent into the attitude we saw in DOTD, I'm rather more intrigued to hear a War Doctor in his relative prime, when the anger and fire were still burning inside and mark him as trully different... As much as I liked the War Doctor, there's also a part of me that's still torn on exploring the Time War in any great depth, I still hope some of it remain a mystery, and there's also a nagging fear that some of the stories might descend too far into cliche 'epic action sequences' or convoluted rewriting timelines stuff (not that either would be an issue exactly, I enjoyed the Dark Eyes saga immensely, but I did feel by the end of the fourth box set the rewriting timelines stuff had become a bit hard to follow at points) ) and forget the very human (well, timelord) cost that lays at the heart of the conflict But those are relatively small concerns (or alternatively, limitations that any story exploring the time war might have to battle against), and for all the potential pitfalls, a insane war across time and space told through the eyes of a outcast Doctor who isn't quite the man we know and love is a goldmine for new stories ideas, and moral dilemnas the franchise can't normally explore to the same scale, and overall I can't wait... Excellent trailer though! Currently reading Engines of War myself, and I second the recommendation, so far it's a fast moving action packed thriller (if a kinda generic read at points) with a more angry and proactive War Doctor, but also a novel the packs a fair amount of tragedy and discussion about morality into it's pages. Not a groundbreaking novel i.m.o but so far a throughly enjoyable read. Torchwood doesn't interest me, though I do plan on pre-ordering the 10DA nearer release date...

I preordered the Only the Monstrous as soon as Big Finish announced it and Big Finish has not given me a single reason to regret it.

Anyone know if any of the ideas from the Seasons of War charity anthology (which has a preface from Nick Briggs and short piece from Matt Fitton) are being adapted in anyway in these series?

Don't about Seasons of War BF said they kept Engines of War in mind though so the boxsets should enhance and not conflict it. Not that Engines is needed to enjoy the BF boxsets anyway.
