Listened to The Innocent today and thought it was brilliant how the audio drama feels like a hybrid of the RTD and Moffat Eras. Also: glad these stories don't seem to be focused entirely on War VS The Daleks because whilst the Doctor taking on the Daleks is always great, it could become a bit repetitive if it was always about them. The Taalyens war made for a nice diversion.

Does the War Doctor coming across an older Rejoice in The Thousand Worlds remind anyone else of Girl In The Fireplace?

It reminded me more of the older Molly in Dark Eyes 4.

But then, I wasn't a huge fan of Girl in the Fireplace. It would be boring if we all liked the same episodes. I enjoyed Girl in the Fireplace, although I can see why some might disagree with the Doctor's romance with Madam De Pompadour when he's supposed to be in a relationship with Rose.

The presumed relationship with Rose is totally NOT why Girl in the Fireplace is not one of my favorite episodes. I am most definitely not a Ten-Rose shipper. I did enjoy most of the episodes with Nine, Ten, and Rose but I didn't care much for the companion-Doctor romance aspect.

It just wasn't one of my favorites. I guess, if I think about it, the story idea was a little too far-fetched for me to buy into it. For undefinable reasons, it was just one of those stories that didn't grab me the way some stories do.

Listened to The Heart of the Battle today and I hope Rejoice survived. I'd like to see her become companion to a post-War Doctor. The 11th would be the best-suited for her possibly if Big Finish get Matt Smith onboard at some point.

I re listened to this whole set today and..well, I've got to say I was a bit hard on it. It's got a fantastic performance from Hurt. That scene where he takes umbrage about being on a "team" was hilarious. He really got across the weariness of the war.
My initial complaint was that this didn't feel like a Doctor role that is particularly "warrior" like and I stand by that. However I think with this being near the end for him, the darkest times may have been and gone for him. He's not got the fight in him as much as he did earlier on. I also thought there should maybe be a bit more Dalek-prescence but hey - this is only box 1.
Yeah....a second listen free of the hype and excitement made me appreciate this a lot more and I think it's one of the best pure adventures Nick has written in a long while. He's firing on all cylinders with it.
The next set is out in ONE MONTH...that's insanely quick.

I agree with most of your points, I am wondering though if B.F simply felt it was inappropriate to make Hurt's Doctor more of an warrior boogeyman, when DOTD (i.m.o) showed him more as a an exhausted old man left with no other option than outright grimdark action hero, realistically at aged 75 Hurt would possibly struggle to create a younger version of his voice anyway, and from a commercial point of view the BBC or Moffat may have placed limitations on how dark they could push the War Doctor (though I interpreted the supposed destruction of Gallifrey was the major reason why 10 and 11 were so angry with him in DOTD) I certainly enjoyed Only The Monstorus and Hurt's performance very much though, and I've just pre-ordered the second boxset. I loved Engines Of War so I wouldn't say no to more War Doctor novels...

The first pass through, I felt as you did (bolded)....and I believed I said as much somewhere in the last 7 pages. On second pass, I decided to listen to it as: John Hurt is The Doctor. I took it as an excellent and long three-part story (and I like those; done right - Tom Pertwee's Silurian episode - you can really get a lot of intersecting plots going). Though I'm still hoping we start seeing something of what makes him The War Doctor as opposed to The Doctor, who happened to find himself in a War. Or, I suppose I can simply ignore whatever Moffat said about the character (via his scripts) and just listen to it as ...... John Hurt is The Doctor.

Given this a relisten. Still a great set, I think, and holds up well. It's more of a standard Time War affair than the following three sets, but I think it works really well as an introduction to the range. If this was a later set in the range, I think it would have been a step down. It's almost b-movie or TV21-esque, with the War Doctor and the Time War surroundings thrown in.
John Hurt's wonderful in it, naturally, as is Jacqueline Pearce.
