Ok so my take on Accent. A strange cross between a badly done Sean Connery and a decent Dennis Lawson [Wedge from Star Wars) so he was passable Scottish just Not close to Capaldi. Regards mark687 A young Dennis Lawson is a great shout. That's much closer to what Dudman gets here than Capaldi. Gordon from Local Hero would be where I'd pick Dennis Lawson from rather than his bit part in SW though hey, he is Ewan McGregor's Uncle though so the Star Wars connection is strong! Interesting you hear Connery as that's the wrong coast entirely for Capaldi's accent. Would be like hearing a Scouser when it's supposed to be Mancunian. I listened to this story earlier and I'd agree...it's not good performance wise. Dudman's only strength is as an impressionist and if he can't do that then I don't think he's a stong enough reader in his own right to be doing Capaldi stories. Without the impression being good there's nothing to anchor the performance to. Others may not be doing as strong an impression either but they get a pass as "real" Who actors as part of the era they're reading about, or they're strong audio readers like Stephen Critchlow. Dudman can do Tennant and Smith stories well as his voice is quite uncanny there. His lack of acting and reading skill is less obvious as his impressions are so good. This is why I've always been reticent about soundalikes. They have to capture the voice AND be good actors too, not just impersonators. I'd say BF's biggest success at this has been Tim Treolar's Pertwee who captures the voice well but most importantly can act the hell out of some of the more emotive pieces BF have given him. Dare I say it...more than I think Pertwee himself may have done! It's a good story though, quite fresh and with a good grasp of the 12th Doctor's era. It's a shame it's being overshadowed by this debate but this was always going to be the case.

Well in the 90s Lawson narrated some of the SW Audiobooks so that's actually what Dead Media reminded me of.
Also agree on your other point about Treolar actually being able to emote the scene and retain the vocal style.

makes me wonder what the forthcoming performed third Doctor short trip will turn out like... Not as good as if Katy Manning had performed it... but then I would say that wouldn't I?
Returning to 'the impression', we're overlooking something: we were listening to a student-run podcast and one involving a distorting audio entity. It's a miracle that Twelve sounded audible and legible never mind typical. (There: one retcon can fix all )
As I said, I enjoyed the story and I'm looking forward to the Chronicles. (I heard a Ninth Doctor from the NorthBlendedwithMidlands quite recently, but lots of planets have a NorthBlendedwithMidlands so I didn't complain about that either...)

I listened to this two nights ago and thought it was great! Really atmospheric and visual. Absolutely loved Petra. The threat, although not very threatening, was interesting and resolved quite well. And of course, Jake's performance was terrific. I freaking love that guy's voice, even if his Capaldi impression isn't quite spot on.

Just listened to this today. At first I didn't know what I was listening to. I think a straight read rather than an impression of the 12th Doctor would have been preferable, but I did get drawn in (and eventually didn't even notice any problems with the voice) and was sad with the twist near the end.

A good little story even if it does devolve into technobabble at times. I have no issue with Jacob Dudman‘s impersonation of the Doctor as even if it’s not completely spot on the spirit of the character is still there.

That was a terrible attempt at 12. Agreed. And I agree with nottenst that a straight read would have been better. Also, unlike most of the others of you who have commented, I really didn't love the story at all. It's possible that the poor attempt at impersonating 12 really distracted me from the story.
