Thanks for the info. Certainly, one can't fault a fellow if he feels once bitten twice shy and it's also very understandable that a lot of New Series performers have very busy careers. I really do wish very much that Chris would reprise the Ninth Doctor for Big Finish but that's his decision and I respect it whatever he decides. I'm probably going to want more Ninth Doctor Chronicles though. I definitely think more Ninth Doctor Chronicles is possible. I can’t see them never using the Ninth Doctor again and I did enjoy the first set immensely.

Not likely at all, in fact Eccelston has flat out said he doesn’t want to return to do Big Finish at his book signing in Salford tonight. He says he’s very proud of his 13 episodes but he doesn’t wish to go back to the role due to his experiences. Totally fair enough. I would just wish people would give the poor man a break. He must have been through hell and back. For him to turn up to conventions must already be a real challenge. He deserves our admiration. Not our resentment or disappointment.

If you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend watching his panel from NYCC:
Of course I was sad that the stars couldn't align for his return to the 50th anniversary special, but hearing him talk about it firsthand...I get it. It makes sense as to why he turned it down.
Doctor Who is obviously a major chapter in his life but also clearly a complex one that carried a significant amount of personal pain. I'm genuinely appreciative that despite everything, he didn't turn into an Alec Guinness about it and truly cared that the Ninth Doctor means so much to so many people. He even still made time to "reprise the role" in little personal videos for fans (especially kids) over the years, which speaks volumes about Eccleston as a human being. I think it's quite generous of him to come out and interact with fans at conventions, but after hearing him talk about it (and seeing his slightly sheepish response when he innocently uses the word "fantastic" in conversation and the audience jumps on it), I fully understand him not wanting to return in an official capacity (even audio). Never mind the fans, the press response would be insane and he doesn't seem particularly interested in opening himself up to that again. The wound has healed well enough for him to get to this point. I personally don't think there's a need to pick at it.

I wouldn't rule it out completely, Tom after all spent more than 10 years saying no, and now he can't get enough of Big Finish! True. It's still pretty sad though - knowing and liking Christopher Eccleston was why I first watched Doctor Who!

I think we should just be happy we got 11 unforgettable episodes from Eccelston (plus the Slitheen two-parter) and let BF try and find someone who can “Jacob Dudman” the ninth Doctor.

I watched this already... I never heard him discuss big finish.... I never said he did. It's a bit more nuanced than that. He talks about the 50th anniversary and why he ultimately chose not to do it. He tactfully addresses the negative sides of his experiences making Doctor Who and how it affected his life. Overall he makes it clear that he appreciates that a job he did 15 years ago still means so much to so many people, but also that he has little interest in portraying that character again. Everything he says in this panel supports the response he'd apparently just given at the Salford book-signing re: playing the Doctor for Big Finish.

So we can & should all move on, as Eccleston clearly has.

All of which leads into the inevitable question - moving forward, how would people feel about someone else filling the role of the Ninth Doctor on audio with their interpretation / impression? A good example would be Pete Walsh, who to my aging ears did a pretty good job sounding like the Ninth in Exhausted Supplies and The Twelfth Day : m.youtube.com/watch?v=1wHMFRAZT6km.youtube.com/watch?v=jB5Nq3dWZfM&t=15s(and on side note - Chris Walker Thomson does a rather good twelve. First time I've heard it...) 😊

I also loved Chris Walker Thomson’s voice over of the 12th Doctor playing the game Alien Isolation. Check it out, pretty much could not stop laughing.

I'd gladly settle for more of Nick's take on the Ninth Doctor though.

I do not think we will see any recasts of still living actors, especially not new series Doctors.

I’d suggest almost doing a Companion Chronicles approach to a Ninth Doctor series told entirely from the viewpoint of a new companion. A bit like ‘Rose’ in that regard but taking place years before where the Time War has just ended and the Doctor is still trying to figure out his place in the universe. After what he has done can he still call himself the Doctor? Is he even needed anymore?
I could see how that would be rather limiting though in terms of what stories you could tell.

The catch is, due to his first episode, it would have to take place then immediately after he met Rose.

Thank you so much for pointing me in the direction of this. Like you I found myself laughing a lot throughout the video. Chris did such a good job staying in character inbetween hiding in lockers, channeling the Twelfth's inner Malcolm Tucker (I guess seventy years in the company of the young human students at St Luke's was going to rub off on the Twelfth eventually.😁) and generally dying on his computer generated ****. Not to mention interspersing some rather funny lines inbetween - "No shiitake mushrooms Sherlock!" really should be a thing.. 😊
