I think the massive secrecy around this initially (along with announcement of the documentaries which we haven't heard anything about since) was why it seemed to me like this was definitely going to be the end, but if not it just seems a little weird to me to only want to do a special rather a full series. Maybe it's an actor availability problem? Either way, I'm still excited for this Maybe this is a total fiction I've concocted, but didn't they say there would be a live performance tour or some such, and then Series XIII? Maybe doing a special in place of XIII is a compromise so there's not nothing on TV for a long period of time? Is this in place of XIII? I also seem to recall XI and XII were commissioned together, so if this does count as XIII I wouldn't be surprised if there was a XIV in the wings at least. I remember them saying that they'd really like to do some sort of live touring episode, but they never said it was actually going to happen as far as I recall. They just really wanted to do it.

Hello again.
There be no spoilers here shipmates. I enjoyed it. Seeing the familiar boys from the Dwarf back after a while was great. The guest characters were fun and produced some very silly moments. There was the usual danger and excitement generated by the plot. Cat's outfit has to be seen to be believed. The biggest cheer from the audience was for Norman Lovett as the loveable but slightly eccentric ship's computer. It was seeing an old friend again.
While the ending was a little contrived, I don't think it mattered. This was an entertaining ride that I will certainly watch again as I was on Gramp's duty going out making up bottles while it was on. I hope we won't have to wait too long for another series.

I think the ending could have done with maybe being a little 'heavier', but that was pretty much how I thought a feature-length 'Red Dwarf' would go down...

If the idea they do return to Earth, the cover of that thing makes it look like it'd be in the future.....and to a dead planet.
Note: I am not putting spoiler tags on this remark because I don't have the slightest clue if it's true and haven't really read up on this, since I want whatever actually happens to be a hilarious surprise.

Have you read or listened to Chris Barrie's' reading of the first Red Dwarf novel, by Grant & Naylor? I read it about 27 years back and listened to it two years back and it adds a great deal to televised continuity. I say so as Doug Naylor continues to play fidelity to past episode continuity. Essentially, Dave Lister lands on Earth, and discovers that it had been consigned to a giant rubbish tip for humanity after his time, and was blighted by acid rain. Cockroaches had evolved as the only creatures to survive the hostile environment, but had become intelligent creatures, and human sized, but quite friendly, at least from his acquaintance with the one he encountered. I wonder if he would retain this in any on screen exploration of Earth in Dave Lister's concurrent timeline 3m years after Rimmer's 'accident'?

Finally got to watch this. I admittedly haven't really kept up with the Dave era of shows, but the premise of a sequel to a favorite episode that aired 32 years ago (!) was irresistible. Watched it with my kids and we loved it! The big budget feel was such a treat, the bad guys were hilarious with the visual cat jokes, and the crew was lovable as ever.
The show is new to my kids, so Rimmer is a "love to hate" character. I thought it was sweet that my younger one...
{Spoiler} ...was really sad for Rimmer when he realized that nobody liked him (even though Kryten's dead-eye stare was laugh-out-loud hilarious).
That scene was played really well (loved the moonlight analogy) and the payoff at the end was rather sweet.
