Having just moved into the Fifth Doctor/Turlogh stories, I got to thinking about these Fifth Doctor/one companion eras that Big Finish has been able to exploit (and "Fifth Doctor alone" eras they've been able to create). It feels unusual and a very creative twist for a Doctor who always had a group of companions until his very last story. And then it occurred to me that since Tegan was waiting in the TARDIS all through Excelis Rising, Big Finish now has an opening for some Fifth Doctor/Tegan stories!
Since Janet Fielding started working with Big Finish, they focused on doing the Tegan/Turlough/Older Nyssa stories for five years; we're now getting some Nyssa/Tegan stories starting in January; and hopefully we'll get some Tegan/Turlough stories in 2017. I'd really like it if after that we got a trilogy (or an anthology disc) with just the Fifth Doctor and Tegan, just to see how their dynamic works when there's no one else involved. (I'm not sure if The Gathering is a fair example since he's visiting her after she left the TARDIS, so their relationship is at a very different point than it would have been during the series.)

I've actually been disappointed by how Tegan has been handled by Big Finish. While, yes, these two argue, it seems more to come out of how the two deal with things in the face of danger - Tegan is hands on and doesn't want to be coddled and Five just wants to protect his friends - and their relationship seems to be more at ease at other times , particularly in The Five Doctors when the two affectionally tease each other. A Five/Tegan triolgey might be a nice way of expounding on Resurection of The Daleks and Season -adventures in which Tegan sees her friend worn down by the darkness of the universe and is afraid of what it will mean for him and is still in the throttle of dealing with during Ressurection.

That's a great idea, and very fitting-- the gap that Excelis Rising puts them in is at the end of Frontios, so if they return to Turlough on Frontios at the end of the trilogy then they would be heading right in to Ressurection of the Daleks.

Yeah, give Janet Fielding a crack at solo companion, without Nyssa to act as a buffer between her and the Doctor. I get the feeling Nyssa had to do a lot of mediating where the Doctor, Adric, Tegan and Turlough were involved.

A Five/Tegan trilogy might be a nice way of expounding on Resurrection of The Daleks and Season 21 adventures in which Tegan sees her friend worn down by the darkness of the universe and is afraid of what it will mean for him and is still in the throttle of dealing with during Resurrection. I'd be all for it, it's a fascinating emotional character arc we only really got from the periphery for Resurrection of the Daleks. There's certainly a precedent for it in what we see later on given the Doctor's more mature and hard-nosed attitude during the post- Planet of Fire Peri/Erimem stories and his exchange with Tegan at the very end of Resurrection. That part of the conversation where he pleads that she can't go, "not like this", seems almost to imply that her departure was long incoming and something that both of them were acutely aware of.

I'd be all for this for reasons already stated in the above posts. I enjoy the interplay between Five and his various companions a great deal but it's also a pretty full Tardis a lot of the time. I've enjoyed it when Five has had adventures with just Nyssa or just Turlogh; I have no doubt that some interesting ground could be covered with Five/Tegan adventures.

Five and Tegan stories would be brilliant (except for the less Nyssa part, of course).

I still want a sequel to The Gathering. I still want to know if the doctor finds a way to save her!
Which reminds me that someone over on the Verity! podcast said there should be a companion support group. You could do stories with companions as they are now, getting together, having tea and struggling to get on with their lives.

I would love a trilogy with either Five anda Tegan set at the end of Frontios or a Tegan and Turlough trilogy I have seen the next releases for the 5t'ho DR factures Nyssa and Tegan. I have nothing against Nyssa But I strongly feel that they should give her a long rest. They could give Sarah Sutton other characters to play in their non Who related audios, But please give Nyssa a rest!! My thoughts exactly. The regular use of the character has resulted in the law of diminishing returns in how she comes off. Nyssa didn't always come off too well with the three companion TARDIS crew (most of the time the writers wrote her as the younger Nyssa from the 5th and Nyssa stories instead of the older Nyssa who was introduced in that arc), and in the 2014 trilogy it took until the final story to do anything interesting with her. If Big Finish can wait a year or two to revisit Nyssa, the writers can find fresh and interesting angles to write her with, and we, the listeners, get a far better story out of it.

Need to do better stuff with Nyssa. Will not repost all my Big Finish forum thoughts on this yet again, but need to do better stuff with Nyssa. There's still a lot of unexploited potential. Tegan and Nyssa's friendship for example - only really explored properly in Castrovalva. Hoping 2016 trilogy will address that.

I don't think Five and Tegan ever did travel alone though. Turlough joined before Nyssa left, and Tegan left before Turlough left. For Tegan to be Five's only companion, Nyssa or Turlough would have to go on vacation or something stupid like that.

In the final episode of Frontios the Doctor and Tegan go off in the TARDIS to deposit the Gravis on a barren planet. I think there are a couple of Short Trips in this gap, and the Fifth Doctor Excelis story takes place here too, Tegan absent because she's sulking in the TARDIS. The Gathering is set during Peri and Erimem for the Doctor (Perimem are in Monte Carlo for The Veiled Leopard) and for Tegan it's set after her departure in Resurrection of the Daleks, having taken the long way to 2006.
