I already own the Dalek Empire series via a Humble Bundle offer last Christmas, but have yet to listen to it.
For those who have, how good is it and why?

This is one I keep meaning to plug into and listen but should I listen to this chronoglogically or not, Can some of you guys who have a degree of listening experince to this guide me and ljwilson.

Tim's timeline for the Daleks might be helpful? I think mostly the series runs in chronological order though.
I really like it although series 3 and 4 are among the things I still haven't got to listening to yet. I think series 3 is a no-brainer that I'll like it because it has David Tennant, and I'm likewise enchanted with the cast alone for series 4. I do tend to think of the two seasons I've heard as very eventful, even if there are some things that seem frustratingly inflexible (i.e., the Daleks and their dominion over an empire).
Also there's Return of the Daleks from the bonus release range and I'm glad I started there. It was an interesting introduction to Susan Mendez too in that I listened to it and thought, "Great character as soon as she works out her loyalties" and then on into Dalek Empire where it quickly dawned on me that she really doesn't seem to have a lot of good options in that department so she ended up very likable no matter what goes on. Kalendorf is pretty awesome amongst characters (Gallifreyans included) that I still can't quite figure out it I like, but am always glad when they enter a scene.

I loved it -- with a catch.
Series 1 was excellent, as was Series 2. Series 3 was also very good...but had a bit of an odd twist that I can't say here without spoiling it. Still good though. Series 4, however, was kind of blasé.
It's not that it was bad, per se. But it was a story that was set concurrently with Series 1, and did nothing to resolve the cliffhanger at the end of Series 3. And years later, there has never been a Series 5 to resolve that cliffhanger.

I'm quite fond of what I've heard of Dalek Empire so far. I finished series 3 a couple of weeks back and have series 4 waiting in my Big Finish pile. I liked series 1 & 2 very much and series 3 is the best so far. I think if you're at all interested in the series then it's definitely worth it, especially at the price it's at right now. What makes it such an interesting series for me is the focus on character. There are large, catastrophic events unfolding throughout the series and those events are given a lot more weight because we experience them through the eyes of a group of characters that we come to know quite well. Everything becomes much more personal and intense because of the characters' struggles, which we get a first hand view of, and the difficult choices they all have to make. If you've ever wondered what it's like when the Doctor isn't there to save the day, this is it. It gets dark, but it's satisfying.

I love this series. I think it's one of my favorite series that BF has ever released. And the fact that David Tennant is in Series 3 is a bonus!
The characters are complex and fascinating and the stories are riveting. Highly recommended.

The Dalek Empire series is a deliciously dark and morally Grey world. Very dystopian, and having Gareth Roberts in it is brilliant. It's strong stuff; at times brutal. I think the characters are more developed than the Cyber-series. I prefer I,Davros, myself. Miserable drudgery and poignantly beautiful, at times. The only series I haven't heard yet is the third, but I like the idea in the fourth one that they have to develop armour similar to a Dalek's casing to be able to fight them and go around press-ganging fighters. The second series with good Daleks and bad Daleks is a great idea. Certain bits seem very tropey when compared to later main range releases and the Cyber-series but still brilliant. Return of the Daleks from the bonus range is definitely worth listening to. Was never sure what to make of the Mentor in the second series, I get the concept just not sure whether I entirely liked the character.

It always struck me as the grown ups' answers to The Dalek Chronicles with a grim and unremitting atmosphere that wouldn't have been out of place during the original run of Blake's 7. I rather enjoyed the first series and I'd probably listen to it after The Apocalypse Element from the main range, but I could never get into the second season. I'm not entirely sure why.

I've only listened to the first series ... - good enough to keep listening ...though I would take breaks between them and had little enthusiasm compared to the other series I felt it was one of Big Finish's weakest series
though, of course, most of their series are extremely good - so hard to match up to that sort of competition

I just finished Dalek Empire 3 and 4 this week. Dalek Empire 3 was an interesting twist on the whole story, as others have said, and I thought David Tennant was quite good in it.
I don't know how anyone could say Dalek Empire 4 was blasé. I though it was fantastic and exciting. I couldn't wait to get to the end. Noel Clarke was fantastic as Kade and Maureen O'Brien did a great job as Landon.

I thought the third Dalek Empire series was better than the fourth one, but all of the Dalek Empire stories were very enjoyable in their own way. It's a must buy series for any Dalek fans out there... I still maintain the original series is one of the best things that Nick Briggs has ever written. You just can't go wrong with it.

It would be fun to have a Dalek Empire 5. I would definitely buy that!

Tennant in Empire 3 makes me really sad he didn't bring that game to TV as the Doctor.

Not sure what kind of progress you were looking for. It's a good story all by itself.

Perhaps Dalek Empire 5 could lead to the Time War?

Nah. Wouldn't fit in with the story told so far, at all IMO. DE is a big story, but its scope is also rather limited to one galaxy (well, two if you want to get nitpicky). And it's a pretty grounded series as well, with characters that are real/ordinary people living in extraordinary times, not godlike deus-ex-machina Time Lords.
