Hmmm..while I am far from a fan of the Conservative party and their current ideology I do think the Guardian is batting on a sticky wicket with this article, which implies guilt by association of using the same App. As far as I can see there is no proof....no 'smoking gun' that any of the named individuals courted the extremists on that site, even if personally I wouldn't be surprised if two of those named had. Unfortunately as the only evidence appears to be the dates they joined Parler it does come across as clickbait on the Guardian's part.

Most MP's social media accounts are run by aides or SPADs for their publicity. Not surprising that some would be on Parler ready for if it became the next big thing. The proof of the pudding would be who posted what, and it seems they were all innocuous stuff. Unfortunately the printed / online newspapers do have political agendas in their editorial approach, and content has to be approached with this in mind. I'll wait and see what Private Eye makes of this in their next edition - if they even deem it worthy of comment. At least they might give me a laugh along with the 'news'.

Oh look, another 'I'm a blind stumper for free speech without an ounce of critical thinking and no regard for the last four years' type. And he retweeted James Dreyfus. Clearly someone with a clear head and perspective who in no way has ridiculously simplistic views of complex situations.
(Seriously, things being neo-nazis vs corporate monopolies suck. You won't hear me argue otherwise, but if animosity towards twitter is eclipsing the man and his followers who wanted to overturn a democratic election in one of the most powerful countries on earth because 'their feelings were hurt' and how that's been stoked because of platforms like Parler not doing their jobs, then I question if concern over protecting people's rights is the actual matter at stake here for Mr. Doyle).

If you need any other reason to not take Mr. Doyle's commentary on contentious topics seriously, I can sum it up with this one chap he retweeted (and by-and-large echoes in his own posts):
Oh the irony is so huge, so thick and heavy, it threatens to split Earth in two under its sheer weight.

He is a popular writer with a broad CV, in print, stage and television. His written work shows an understanding of his chosen subject matter, whilst his satire is concise and to the point. He has a doctorate in English Literature from the University of Oxford, so I think he is capable of handling more than a simplistic perspective on matters. He is no stranger to censorship on Twitter himself. andrewdoyle.co.uk/biography/

A piece of paper doesn't immunize one to either critique or making errors, and neither does popularity (I don't need a doctorate to know that Argumentum ad populum is a weak argument, or irrelevant to the question at hand).

Slightly off-topic, but I couldn't resist putting this up: let it never be said that the universe doesn't have an sense of humourous timing.

Quiet on this thread recently, isn't it? Government haven't been doing anything much, I suppose.
Meanwhile, in news from around 30 years ago:
Allies liberate Kuwait Soviet Union collapses
Dodo still extinct Elvis not seen on moon EDIT: probably
EDIT: Yes I did think of the 'Dodo' jokes this being mostly a 'Who' forum but I'm happy to serve up a feed line now and then...

I'm still wishing she'd do a Big Finish.
News from 2021: Dodo not permanently extinct. Soon to be found on audio, as a recast (I believe this is true because I read it on here somewhere, but don't remember any details.)

Well with the aim of updating this thread then-
-Vaccination scheme actually going well with 12 million first doses. Credit where credit’s due, its working. And yes it’s a stark contrast to the utter failure in the EU. -Sunday Times reporting NHS reforms are being planned, basically reversing the last big reforms in 2012. -Local elections definitely going ahead this year but bring your own pen/pencil. -Polling of Tory members’ opinion on the Cabinet found Liz Truss had highest favorability (+85.5%) and Gavin Williamson by far the lowest (-48.4%). Notably Johnson’s ratings were lower than Truss, Sunak, Raab and Gove. -Reports that the government’s latest big idea to stop Scottish independence sentiment was relocating Prince Edward (aka that royal everyone forgets even exists) to Scotland. -Polling in Northern Ireland came out showing Sinn Fein polling really well. So another problem for unionists there. I’m increasingly of the opinion that there will probably be a united Ireland in my lifetime.

I completely missed this. Sad that Jackie seems officially never to be returning, but thanks!
