Footnote from Good Omens, by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman: "NOTE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AND AMERICANS: One shilling = Five Pee. It helps to understand the antique finances of the Witchfinder Army if you know the original British monetary system: Two farthings = One Ha'penny. Two ha'pennies = One Penny. Three pennies = A Thrupenny Bit. Two Thrupences = A Sixpence. Two Sixpences = One Shilling, or Bob. Two Bob = A Florin. One Florin and one Sixpence = Half a Crown. Four Half Crowns = Ten Bob Note. Two Ten Bob Notes = One Pound (or 240 pennies). One Pound and One Shilling = One Guinea. The British resisted decimalized currency for a long time because they thought it was too complicated." (Emphasis mine. I know it’s not weights and mass but the principle is the same) A sixpence was also known as a tanner, therefore a shilling and sixpence was known as 1 and a tanner. you missed that one You didn't mention the groat... 4d or one third of a shilling. You're probably too young for that one. My dad always called half a crown - half a dollar. Because that was the fixed exchange during the war - for the benefit of the US troops over here.
And the pre-decimal system isn't even British - we got them from the Continent (Libra, Solidus, Denarii - all Latin words. Florin - Italian) in particular the Frankish kingdom around the 7th century.
Anyway, don't know about you but the pubs have never sold drinks in litres, the milk bottles on my doorstep are still pints, babies have always had their weight announced in pounds and ounces - and I only switched to giving my height and weight in metric when I discovered that I only had to add a leading one to my weight to get my (current) height. So handy for filling in medical forms.

^^ Of course, just like when I was growing up, and into my 30s until the morning communte meant I was out of the house before the milkman came round! In the UK there is a firm called Milk&More (milkandmore.co.uk) An absolute lifesaver during lockdown last year. Without having to lug plastic bottles back from the shop every few days I have hardly any plastic recycling to get rid of. It might not be as cheap as the shops, but for the convenience and the green smugness it imparts, worth every penny.

The same Andrew Neill who was behind GBNews & claimed he was declaring a war on woke & kept on about being anti-woke? The same Andrew Neil who stated he wasn't interested in working with Nigel Farage. The same Andrew Neil who ran away with his tail between his legs from the monster he'd help create? The same Andrew Neil who turned up on Question Time in a pathetic desperate attempt to reclaim his journalistic integrity? I didn't always agreed with him but I used to respect him. Not any more.

Ah - so you actually read the article? Or did you just go for a brainless excuse?

... but it is quite critical of the present administration and its state of affairs, discussed knowledgeably and without bias, as one would expect from Mr A NeilNot wishing to butt-in, but does anyone these days discuss anything without some sort of bias?

Exactly, we all discuss things from a particular point of view & as mentioned once upon a time I thought Neil had integrity even if I didn't always agree with him. Now I have no time for anything the man has to say. He should crawl back under his rock after deliberately playing into the hands of the anti-woke mob with his GBNews fiasco that only fuels division. His attempts to distance himself from the channel & plead innocence is offensive. Listen to the man! Pathetic!

Yes. I do believe its possible. I can, for one and I think its an easy dismissal to pin a source to a flag which one is opposed to. I have said it here many times that I am apolitical and have voted equally amongst the main three parties in the past 30 years. It is possible to be conservative with a small 'c' and yet vote Labour, socialist in belief, yet see that the Conservatives are more capable of running the UK in contrast to the best of the opposition, etc. When someone cannot discuss/acknowledge the points of a critical discussion of the Tories because one believes the author to be a Tory (when he says himself he is not) is just a trenchant brick wall, mangled metaphors be damned. At the end of the day, its just tiresome that one cannot post an interesting article without facing such negativity and a perceived call to defend ones choices. No one calls out or challenges to a discussion, JHD's dominance of this thread do they? Why is that? Anyway. I am nearly done with all this and could not give a monkeys.

Hi daver I see you have deleted yourself so will likely not be back to read this reply. On the offchance you are still lurking, I am sorry you are gone, your posts were always thought provoking and well worth a read, you will be missed. Hopefully you are on another forum where somebody else can succeed where I failed and persuade you of the folly of brexit!😀 Best wishes for now and the future

Well, Carrie has got two babies a baby to look after and another on the way, and Zac Goldsmith does have a holiday home going spare.... doesn't she deserve a break before trying to arrange a big family Christmas at Chequers?
