Well get the popcorn out. A special advisor being publicly hauled before the press is, I think, unprecedented.

Well get the popcorn out. A special advisor being publicly hauled before the press is, I think, unprecedented. Hauled before the press? He wouldn't be appearing if he thought he was in any danger of losing his job or being confronted on what he has done. He is the real leader of this party. I hope he gets some tough questions but doubt it. Rumour is he will use his disabled child as a scapegoat. Another insult to all those with similar circumstances who have observed lockdown even though it is difficult. I wonder if he got fined for his actions? If not why not. & will all those that have been fined for similar behaviour get their money back? PS- Laura Kuenssberg is a Tory shill.

Interesting to note that by appearing on TV giving a statement & fielding questions Dominic Cummings is breaching the Special Adviser code. Not that he gives a damn about anything or anyone. Point 14 of the code - "Special advisers must not take public part in political controversy, through any form of statement whether in speeches or letters to the press, or in books, social media, articles or leaflets. They must observe discretion and express comment with moderation, avoiding personal attacks, and would not normally speak in public for their Minister or the Department."The full code

So Cummings’ drove 30 minutes to Barnard Castle to check his eyesight, with his wife & child in the car! This would all be amusing if it wasn't so damaging to lockdown & insulting to those that have made real sacrifices to 'Stay home, protect the NHS, save lives'

The whole thing really is an insult. So he drives to a local beauty spot on his wife's birthday and expects us to believe a cock and bull story about testing his eyesight? And if it was that bad, why not just let his wife drive to London the next day?
Interesting tweet from the BBC's Faisal Islam - Cummings said yesterday he had warned about coronavirus pandemic last year, but apparently the internet archive shows the relevant paragraphs about coronavirus were only added to his article on 14 April this year
The whole thing stinks

From Sky's Beth Rigby:
Mary Wakefield said when her husband fell ill (March 28) he couldn’t get out of bed for 10 days.
But in his statement yesterday Cummings said he drove to hospital to collect his son on Apr 3

Translates as "All our friends have been ill with it too and we have been Jolly British about it, unlike the Oiks, lesser people. We are made of sterner stuff" Fact of the matter was: As soon as they displayed mild symptoms, or the fact of his contact with newly diagnosed Boris, Matt & Chris, he was required to self-isolate. For 14 days. In a ground floor flat. With the press on the look out for any breaches of quarantine. Far better to belt it up north after midnight, where the family has private land in which you can get out and about. Except they got careless and ventured out and about (don't be silly darling, everyone thinks we're holed up in London)... Did they really get ill? Edit: Correct me if I am wrong, anyone, but it was also well reported that Boris, his pregnant partner, the Heath Secretary Matt Hancock and the Chris Whitty the Chief Medical Officer had the Virus. Not Dominic Cummings & his wife. Only that he was not around and had been last seen running out of no 10 when the news broke. The Press kept asking where he was and No 10 refused to comment.

He did have symptoms. This was confirmed in his wife's article. His reasoning for his 60 mile round trip was that he was testing his eyesight, this is a debatable symptom of COVID-19

Today's PMQs should be interesting. Whitsun recess, there’s no PMQs today. There is however the first appearance of Johnson before the Liaison Committee.

I had a rule that meant I wasn't going to post on this thread, but having watched a bit of the empty furore of the last few days (only a bit, the weather has been too good, the garden needs work and life is too short!) I think we now have proof that lockdown has driven the country collectively barmy and vindictive and our glorious media are the ones most affected. We really do need a bit of perspective sometimes.
Was he wrong? Obviously. Should he have resigned? Obviously.
(I make no moral judgements, why should I, this is all about politics, not morals and politically speaking of course he was wrong and should have resigned. Or even better, been promptly sacked - there would have been votes in it. Cynical? Never! )
Would he be getting the same treatment if he held the same post and had done the same journey and had previously led the Remain campaign instead...? Oh yes of course, none of this is personal... Yeh right! (And I say that as a Remain voter who still deeply regrets the loss of the best PM of this century so far, as a result of that referendum.)
Now, having broken my own rule, I will instantly ban myself before the howling mob turns on me. It's clearly what people expect.

You shouldn't have to consider banning yourself from a thread for expressing an opinion, my friend. This is not Gallifrey Base!

I agree with you that it is personal against Cummings, but it not just because he led the Leave campaign - he appears to treat 99% of the population with utter contempt including most MPs and he is an abrasive bully who has made a lot of enemies. Look at the resignation/sacking of the adviser who was frogmarched out of her workplace by the police, look at the sacking/resignation of Sajid Javid. Cummings has made a lot of enemies by his arrogant behaviour and he has very few friends.
But I don't think the calls for his resignation are just sour grapes by his enemies - he really did do something genuinely wrong and he ought to pay the price as others have had to do
