I've always thought it was supposed to be Troughton's costume. From a real world POV...they weren't gonna go to the expense and effort of getting a Troughton costume for the taller Pertwee for the sake of a 2 second fall so they put something Troughtonish on him and didn't go in close up. Yes I never noticed any significant difference myself, certainly no worse than the rather noticeable costume changes in some regenerations. I did mention above that Terrance dicks work set in series 6B and that does make me further doubt the between 2 and 3 theory as a I don't see chibnall rendering the world game book by Terrance invalidish so soon. Yes, the stories were probably written and planned well in advance but I don't know, the BBC has edited and cut scripts for relatively recent news stories before so I think Terrance dicks passing would probably cause chibnall to rethink. Aside from that, there is of course the things others have mentioned about the Doctor not recognising the sonic which wouldn't add up. It does remind me of one fantheory about time repeating itself in the whoniverse with numerous doctors rebelling against gallifreys in a constant but slightly different cycle. I personally still expect that either Ruth Doctor or 13 herself (now wouldn't that be a controversial and unlikely decision) will be an alternative universe version of the Doctor. Or at best some kind of clone. Whilst chibnall has said otherwise, I always say wait and see because if anyone has played Arkham Knight you'll know why I'm cautious about these sorts of announcements. All that said I do hope Ruth is a future Doctor, the actress seemed very comfortable in the role. Whilst I don't like the costume (sue me!) and the usual the Doctor doesn't use weapons lines, Ruth seemed to have the right shades of the manipulative Doctor I love along with a Doctor who just seemed really personable and like a normal person, if that makes sense? Ruth already reminded me of a lot of people I know so perhaps it is that. Hmm. For me, Ruth just does not "feel" like the Doctor. For me, some aberration of River or Jenny would make much more sense. The fighting style even reminds me a lot of Jenny.
Carrying a huge gun, having great hair, good handling of the TARDIS and a costume that looks nice and is not ridiculous just does not scream "Doctor" for me.
Also her behaviour and the alias. Where is Joanna Smith?
I am having a hard time fitting this into my head in any way that fits.

But it's not supposed to fit in your head yet. We've got a map, sure, but no compass and we don't know which way we're going - not being able to figure it all out yet is exactly the point. And as I said before, retconning the first PoC to be The Doctor would be something I don't think the show would be silly enough to do hence Chibnall coming out in the press to say she is 100% The Doctor with no ifs buts or maybes. Doing that then saying "It's Jenny!" would be not just shooting himself in the foot but chopping both his legs off.

I hope you are right.
And as I said, I reserve my judgement on all this until I found out how they are going to resolve this. Because this is either a "guitar on a tank" awesome moment stroke of genius... or ... the opposite.
I am talking Love and Monsters pavement stone level opposite. Because up to that Love and Monsters was a great episode.
Sadly that completely spoiled it for me.

This. This exactly. I was surprised that she was confirmed to be the Doctor for real, because when I watched it I thought her "I'm the Doctor and I travel through time and space" acting was.. wooden. A pastiche of the Doctor. Jo Martin's acting as Ruth was fine, but as the Doctor it didn't ring true; like they hadn't even tried to work out her Doctorish personality. So, what if it's exactly that, and Jo Martin wasn't playing the Jo Martin Doctor - but a familiar Doctor? What if she's trying to impersonate somebody who's already played the role. What if... ..... Ruth is just a human (with the kung-fun having some post-hypnotic explanation) but has been manouevered into downloading into her the personality and biodata of one of the classic series Doctors. What if that's a regular (pre-Time War) Doctor inside a human's body? That would mean that Chibbers was reporting the exact and literal truth by saying she's not a parallel Doctor but the real Doctor, but wouldn't disrupt the past enumeration of incarnations?

These are all good ideas and I think the downloading one works especially given how it's a play on the RTD era next Doctor episode

Thank you. I was seriously doubting my feels. They usually are quite accurate...
It just feels off.
Something is not right.

This. This exactly. Isn’t that EXACTLY the point, though? We as viewers are used to traveling ‘with’ the Doctor, s/he is who we understand even as each new companion tries to get a hold on who their Doctor is. Here the shoe is on the other foot. Jodie—and by extension, us viewers for the first time since 1963—is a surrogate companion, being swept up in something and someone she doesn’t understand. Jodie’s Doctor here was very much the fish-out-of-water of a companion on their first adventure with this strange and inscrutable alien who calls him/herself “the Doctor,” who just happens to be in the middle of some galactic/temporal crisis when the unwitting companion is swept along.

This is true.
This was such a huge "WHAM" that we completely lost sight of the real companions... did the Doctor even notice her "Fam" was gone?
The whole episode felt like a fever dream with very weird pacing and time/ situation jumps in there.
I am still stunned, I think I have to watch this at least another couple of times before I can make heads or tails out of it.

But if that’s the case which classic Doctor is inside Ruth? 🤔My guesses are 3 (the action and Venusian akito), Sixie (Fashion sense, and sass), 7 (darker chess master tendencies) or what if there are multiple incarnations of the Doctor all controlling Ruth at once😀

I'm genuinely surprised by how many people have enjoyed that last episode. I suspected Twitter would have exploded when learning about the first female AND coloured Doctor considering the reaction when Jodie was first announced in 2017, so I'm glad people are just excited again about what's to come.

Also, imagine she wearing this hair open. Would also be a in-joke for people knowing the history of the show and that public appearance of Chibnall during the 6th Doctor era being a little bit critical of the show.

If Ruth is really Sixie can we please have a cameo by Colin either showing how he became Ruth or have Ruth change back into Colin😃Also now I am wondering Ruth’s husband was actually one of Sixie’s companions, perhaps Frobisher 😉🐧

After going back and watching this episode a third time, I am struck by how smart the set-up was for the show and how well executed the writing was. Press saw the Judoon. Good old safe RTD monster. Brings back memories of the 10th Doctor. They it throws Captain Jack at us. Another RTD call back. Both of these things lulling the audience into thinking the show is going to be something else. And then BAM on the head. Rug pulled and everyone left going what the eeff? A great job of the production being leak free, some smart pr work and a well written script. I hope the rest of what CC has planned is as done with as much care.

As far as I remember he is wearing Pertwee's cape when he falls out of the TARDIS. He doesn't get the Pertwee cape outfit till he nicks it from the hospital later on in the ep. After his shower. He should have kept the towel & shower cap look!

Oh well, I am the complete opposite. I thought she was fantastic. In fact the only downside I can see in her being a pre-Hartnell Doctor is that she might not get much screen time, but I am sure she will be on BF! Somehow I want her to be a pre-Hartnell Doc AND the next Doc!

Loved Pertwee. Just imagine him going out like this.
