Well I put the head-phones on and opened the PDF script read along a thing I don’t tend to do,but God am I loving it again...
there is something about reading along with the script I don’t know why but seeing the script being brought to life I guess I feel the thrill of when a writer sees his words come alive...I thought this story needed a box set but actually it’s pretty much complete and probably saved me a fortune too 😂😂😂😂

Well I have to say reading along with the script was so totally enjoyable would be so good to have PDFs with all the releases...now I have had my third listen what can I say.Well am I am glad that it wasn’t a box set as I think it tied up everything very nicely indeed and the alternate Dark Universe Timelords(??) were suitably intriguing and I definitely want to know what happens next.I think looking back on this listen I get that Ace is maturer and separated from the Doctor for over twenty years .McCoys little monologues are actually so 7 I really did love them.So whereas on initial listen it scored really lowly(expectations??) anm now upping it to a really thrilling and engaging tale.

There is nothing wrong with the story per se, but it needed more time to 'breathe'. 4 episodes is not enough here and there is a huge narrative jump between Episode 2 and Episode 3 which needed more time and fleshing out.
Should have been part of a box-set that leads into the final days for 7. I wonder if the pandemic has delayed the schedule of releases here - personally I thought this could have been part of a NA S2 Boxset.

I have listened a few times now and with the script too and am now of the opinion (different from my original) that this was the way to do it...the erasing of the Daleks/Cybermen etc would really just have been padding .The Dark Universe Time Lords?? Can do what they want in the blink of an eye so narratively I think it works excellently on relistens and like I said saved me a fortune on another long winded narrative hahaha

Y'all may laugh at me for this, because this story isn't that old, but look... if ya' notice any one pattern with me in my time on this forum, let it be this: my memory suuuuuuuucks. Which is all a rather long-winded way of saying that I totally forgot that the Eleven was in this one, and was therefore delightfully surprised by their appearance.
Ultimately, though, my feelings on this one are rather mixed. It feels like only one part of a greater arc. And as the beginning part of a larger story, I'd say it's pretty damned awesome! I loved McCoy's narration at the very beginning -- good god, he's so good at things like that -- and the opening scene with Ace and the Eleven was a -fantastic- hook. I also just seem to be a real sucker for these stories that pair companions up with villains (on which note, maybe I ought to be more optimistic for the upcoming War Master 6 set...).
There was one line that struck me as rather interesting: Ace notes having experience with "changeable men." Which, on the face of it, would seem to be an allusion to the Doctor, right? I wonder if this is implying that she has some experience with future incarnations of the Doctor... I can't recall any off the top of my head, but then again, this whole franchise is rather big. In general it seems to me that there are a lot of intriguing 'gaps' in Ace's (life) story... I'd love to see them explored more, especially as we enter this bold new boxset era. If I could get any one wish granted w/r/t the 7DAs, it'd be more opportunities for Sophie Aldred to really demonstrate her range--she can be really, really great in roles that break out of the standard Doctor/Companion template.
Anyway....
I loved the revelation that the citizens of the Dark Universe, who annihilated all other life in their universe, were Time Lords. Because of course they were. I always love it when the Doctor just casually acknowledges the fact that his people are essentially the most dangerous folks in the multiverse as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. Maybe this'll get old one day... but not yet!
And on the subject of this story being the opening shot in a larger arc... I mean, it kind of has to be, right? That ending just leaves so many unanswered questions. What, exactly, does the Doctor hope to get out of this Alliance? Is it related to the Time War, or something else? This seems to be set near the end of the Doctor's life, so presumably it's leading in to the much-teased regeneration story. I've gotta say, my expectations for the 7DAs are quite high by now.

Regards mark687 I do wonder how much involvement they will have in The Last Day boxset. A part of me isn’t exactly keen on the idea that the Dark Citizens could end up orchestrating the events that led to the Seventh’s death in San Francisco.

Yeah, the ending definitely through me fore a loop. If not for the MR number being so high, I'd've assumed it was the beginning of a new mini-arc. On the face of it, it seems really odd that they'd set up story arcs in the MR to be continued in the boxsets. That's also the case for 'The Blazing Hour' setting up the 2DAs take on season 6B, presumably, though in that case it's a bit more subtle. The 'Dark Universe' thing is a much more in-your-face tease.
And I know it's impossible, but I'd love it if the DU Time Lords wound up being from one of the AU Gallifrey's Romana visited back in the 'Gallifrey' range, post-Pandora.
Regardless, can't wait for the 7DAs! If 'The Last Day' is the 7th Doctors regeneration story, it'll be interesting to see how the Dark Universe figures into things. The only reason I bring up the Time War is because 'Gallifrey Time War 1' established That the 7th Doctor (somehow) was aware of the upcoming war, and sent Ace to Gallifrey to help (Not that she did much). Or... wait, am I thinking of 'Enemy Lines?' Regardless. "That one 'Gallifrey' audio with Sophie Aldred.'
I think the #1 thing I'm looking forward to seeing in this "final adventure" is how the 7th Doctor's relationship with Ace ends.

I think they mentioned in one of their overviews for the main range going forward they would be tackling the last days of the Seventh Doctor at some point. Whether the Dark Citizens will be in it is all just speculation on our part though. For all we know, they might return in one of the Eighth Doctor boxsets.

I went into this release with no expectations and really enjoyed it, so I was kind of surprised to see so much negativity about this release.
Unlike many, I love hearing the Seventh Doctor and Ace together and haven't gotten tired of them at all. Long may they continue.
Mark Bonnar is fantastic as The Eleven, always love hearing him.
And I loved the way references from other stories were pulled into this one.
Great story, in my opinion.

It's been a while but I don't remember much discontent about the release being because of Seven and Ace fatigue but rather that there was a boxset (and a 4 discer at that) crammed into a MR release when there was clearly more story that got skipped over for time-issues. The Doctor's actions here, reuniting with an older Ace the 11's Involvement, Olistra, Rasmus, the whole nature of the threat...it screamed boxset. Depending on developments..maybe 2. It was like settling down with an audiobook to find it was (massively) abridged.
