Purgatory 12 is an interesting one The main plot is pretty standard, but there's a very good sub-plot in which each of the Companions has a crisis of confidence adjusting to their new situation. K9s is particuly affecting and it's resolution a little cheeky, nothing like a good mutual "Data Absorption" to get a tail sensor back waging Chase the Night Traditional across the board, Jane Asher it the full old school type DW Villain and the cliff-hangers are all strong. Just about to start and got to say looking forward to this Team and the spirit of that season which definitely was a lot more serious in tone and depth and was quite refreshing less comedic Tom. And the fact that the stories are four parters should be good as I love the other Tom Box sets such as Helm,Gralstead, Foe they were so much better in my opinion, not that making something longer means its better....Zagreus? ??

Really enjoyed these two tales and especially the return of the cliff hangers. no spoilers from me but Jane Asher comes across very strongly in the second tale. I do,like the Wee reference from Tom to Ecclestones first series 😉

I've only listened to Purgatory so far and liked it a lot except for one thing. I've had a problem with Lala Ward's Romana for a while but she was almost painful to listen to in this. Am I the only one who thinks this? I don't mean to be mean but it's like she's getting worse the longer she does this character. Oh, and I love that K-9 has a best friend. Yay, PIPS! I was just about to say how much I liked the character of Crimsson and looked at who the actor was. Ha! George Watkins! I had no idea Marc had another personality. He's quite a catch for Big Finish, isn't he? Crimsson seemed to be just another annoying, clueless character at the beginning, but I ended up really enjoying his earnestness and need to be good for SOMETHING.

Purgatory 13 was saved by the companion subplots imo. The main story was really weak but Romana, K9, and Adric's subplots all really made the story.
Chase the Night was nothing like I expected. I was expecting something very Murder on the Orient Express and I don't even know how to describe it. And I loved it. A new BF classic.

I find the version she does of Romana traveling with 4 so shrill, so harsh and so smug that it is difficult to listen to. I mentioned it in another thread but Lala Ward almost completely ruined the recent Legacy of Time box set for me.

I am half way through Purgatory and it really does have the "feel" of the era. Smug, harsh and shrill are excellent descriptors for how Lala Ward plays Romana. She is hard to like, and seemingly so different from the playful companion that had a best friend quality. Adric seems just about spot on: a confused, troubled, troublesome brat, with a kind heart.

Yes it’s a good one have listened it it three times am sure there’s loads of plot holes that someone will point out later but hey I enjoyed it great listen interesting story and wonderful cast and interplay and I don’t mind classic or not it’s a cracking tale and interesting to visualise.

Am not getting it....but perhaps like some others have with Louise Jameson it’s time to put her on a back burner and revisit

Perhaps my memory has been cheating me...but hasn't Lala always portrayed her character like she currently does? Romana is academically a top of her class Time Lord that has to play second fiddle to a Doctor that can to her be aggravatingly irrational. Can you blame her for being a little miffed? I can't yet properly comment about this newest 9A release, but up until all of her other 4th Doctor audio stories, I've always enjoyed the way Lala plays her role. I thank Romana for her ongoing humorous roasting of Tom's Doctor. Alternatively - In the past, I did find Lala's non Big Finish interviews with her mentioning of how inferior Tom Baker was to her then Mr. Wonderful - Richard Dawkins husband to be eye-rollingly bothersome.

I thought Purgatory 12 was absolutely fantastic - no rounding up, a full five stars. Truly top-notch job by Marc Platt as usual, but even then I'm still amazed as how easily this story seemed like it really was a story from its era. Thank you Big Finish for doing such a fine job.
Hats off to Tom and Matthew for their performances here, and Lalla - maybe it's just me, but it seemed to me like here she sounds quite a bit less "Presidential" than in previous 4th Doctor audios.
Of course she sounds annoyed at having people drag her off on all these adventures when she has a planet to run, lol, but to me this seemed very different and a lot more like I remember things from the TV episodes.
I'm saving the second story for a little while if I can manage, I really want to savor these as much as possible.

Unfortunately I feel the same and it's putting me off picking up this release as I dislike listening to a companion who doesn't seem to want to be adventuring in the TARDIS. A bit of grumbling is okay but this Romana seems permanently negative and irritated by everything she encounters. The character always had a high and aloof bearing in the TV series but it was offset by a warmth and lightness that isn't there in her audio adventures. I think Lalla Ward remains superb but her interpretation of the character has definitely changed.

I am halfway through Purgatory 12 and am enjoying it. There is a sense of Series 18 here, although I feel as if so far, it hasn't been entirely embraced - but I love that era of the show so much, perhaps it has become untouchable to me.
Interesting to hear the comments about Lalla though. I am a huge fan of the character of Romana 2 and, although she has definitely been in a bad mood for many previous stories, that seemed to come to a head in the Sleek story from Series 5, where she reassessed her own character. Here, she seems fine. In fact, it's Adric that is getting on my nerves!
I love that BF haven't softened Adric's character - in the extras Nick Briggs touches on exactly that point. And yet, with Matthew W's insistence on 'upping' his voice to sound younger, and the petulance on display in these first two episodes, I'm wondering why The Doctor and Romana don't just leave him (I know that wouldn't do, being as he stowed away aboard the TARDIS)? He has nothing redeeming about him at all. I'm interested in seeing this being addressed as the story (which I am enjoying, honestly!) rolls along.
Going back to the extras - so far, the most interesting question has been avoided thus far. Namely, 'So, Lalla, are you enjoying working with Matthew again?'

So I listened to the free episode of Chase the Night, and I couldn't get past the first 10 minutes. Baker, Leeson and Waterhouse are all really good, but Ward sounds like she hates doing these. I love her performances in Gallifrey, but the second she's with Tom, it seems to put her acting in a constant state of resentment and anger. Rare miss for me and I'm glad that I heard the free episode first.

It is worth noting that she does lighten up as the episode rolls on, and is lighter still in Purgatory 12 (to my ears anyway).

Well, that's good to hear, and if anything that has made me want to buy the stories individually and just not right away, as there are many other things that excite that much more, but they sound very good from a storyline point. Much appreciated Paz.
