I am halfway through Purgatory 12 and am enjoying it. There is a sense of Series 18 here, although I feel as if so far, it hasn't been entirely embraced - but I love that era of the show so much, perhaps it has become untouchable to me.
Interesting to hear the comments about Lalla though. I am a huge fan of the character of Romana 2 and, although she has definitely been in a bad mood for many previous stories, that seemed to come to a head in the Sleek story from Series 5, where she reassessed her own character. Here, she seems fine. In fact, it's Adric that is getting on my nerves!
I love that BF haven't softened Adric's character - in the extras Nick Briggs touches on exactly that point. And yet, with Matthew W's insistence on 'upping' his voice to sound younger, and the petulance on display in these first two episodes, I'm wondering why The Doctor and Romana don't just leave him (I know that wouldn't do, being as he stowed away aboard the TARDIS)? He has nothing redeeming about him at all. I'm interested in seeing this being addressed as the story (which I am enjoying, honestly!) rolls along.
Going back to the extras - so far, the most interesting question has been avoided thus far. Namely, 'So, Lalla, are you enjoying working with Matthew again?'
She did seem to pitch Romana a little differently with Sleek, which was greatly appreciated. Midway through Purgatory 12 and I hear a little more of that abrasive tone creeping in but it isn’t killing the story for me.

I am minutes from finishing "Chase the Night". I really enjoyed it quite a bit. I'd say around 4.5/5, so I rounded up.
The one thing that kind of annoyed me was that the captain went over-the-top with the acting at the end.

I thought Purgatory 12 was absolutely fantastic - no rounding up, a full five stars. Truly top-notch job by Marc Platt as usual, but even then I'm still amazed as how easily this story seemed like it really was a story from its era. Thank you Big Finish for doing such a fine job. Hats off to Tom and Matthew for their performances here, and Lalla - maybe it's just me, but it seemed to me like here she sounds quite a bit less "Presidential" than in previous 4th Doctor audios. Of course she sounds annoyed at having people drag her off on all these adventures when she has a planet to run, lol, but to me this seemed very different and a lot more like I remember things from the TV episodes. I'm saving the second story for a little while if I can manage, I really want to savor these as much as possible. Am just about to do it again as I gave Chase the Night the most listens as it grabbed me right away But I enjoyed Purgatory on first listen

They all did Rorvik in Warriors Gate that’s what made me think so true to the era

I just finished Chase The Night. Wow! I think it may be my favorite of the all the FDAs. It really felt like our heroes were in serious danger throughout the entire story. The stakes were high and kept getting higher. I don't think the Pilot was over the top at the end. She seemed pretty psychotic and paranoid from the start.
I thought Lala was much better in this one, although she never quite gives up the annoyance completely. But I did feel that she cared about the Doctor and Adric, not just stuck with them. And the discussion at the end with the Doctor gives us a glimpse at her motivation for seeking high office on Gallifrey.

You are not alone. I find the version she does of Romana traveling with 4 so shrill, so harsh and so smug that it is difficult to listen to. I mentioned it in another thread but Lala Ward almost completely ruined the recent Legacy of Time box set for me. Perhaps my memory has been cheating me...but hasn't Lala always portrayed her character like she currently does? Romana is academically a top of her class Time Lord that has to play second fiddle to a Doctor that can to her be aggravatingly irrational. Can you blame her for being a little miffed? I can't yet properly comment about this newest 9A release, but up until all of her other 4th Doctor audio stories, I've always enjoyed the way Lala plays her role. I thank Romana for her ongoing humorous roasting of Tom's Doctor. Alternatively - In the past, I did find Lala's non Big Finish interviews with her mentioning of how inferior Tom Baker was to her then Mr. Wonderful - Richard Dawkins husband to be eye-rollingly bothersome. There’s a quote about Lalla that endears her to me no end - she can answer the phone saying “hello” the same way other people say “fiddlesticks off”.

If so, she'll then be answering her phone today with a joyous "gung hay fat choy" to celebrate today's Chinese New Year. "Fiddlesticks" will have a well deserved day off.

Perhaps I should have waited until I'd heard Purgatory 12 all the way through before I commented, because my 'problem' with Adric is ironed out in the second half, as character exploration makes way for the story itself. Matthew's line delivery sounds a lot more natural, and Adric's earlier whining is addressed and makes way for a more appealing character - which of course justifies The Doctor and Romana's earlier belief in him (Lalla is great here too - not snippy or bad tempered-sounding in the least).
Marc Platt's story, whilst not perhaps hitting the heights of his earlier Sleek tale, is pretty close. Equally, I have heard Sleek a few times now, and this only once, so it might not be a fair comparison. It is pleasingly Series 18 in style - the Doctor's quips are kept to a minimum (which Tom should be thanked for, curbing his love of eccentric improvisation) and K-9 gets some harsh treatment. A word also for Amy Downham, who is great as the disembodied Pips, one of many of Marc Platt's enjoyably weird characters

Anticipating the next two stories then?

The way things are going in China I don’t thing there’s a lot of happiness going around tbh It's certainly a worry, particularly after the SARS outbreak nearly two decades back. On the upside, they've certainly been trying for happiness in spite of it. We had a celebration in the centre of Brisbane a few days ago for New Year's Eve. Astonishing performance. Two dragons with four performers and a full band. They carried out flips from five-metre poles in full costume. Dragons on their "hind-legs" as the performers leapt up to piggyback one another. All carried out in what must've been 30 oc+ heat. They looked winded, but not much else. The applause and cheering was well-earned. Strong stuff from beginning to end. It was quite the thing.

I always appreciate the polls on these threads to give an indication of people’s thoughts without potentially spoiling myself by reading the comments before listening.
I doubt I will listen to this for awhile because I am currently enjoying Lalla in Gallifrey: Time War II, then it is onto the War Master IV and then I am expect Gallifrey III to be out.
I don’t want to OD on Lalla Ward - but what a way to go!!
Plus I like having new Fourth Doctor stories waiting for me to listen to them, plus I want to revisit Season 18 again on Blu-ray so that I can hear these stories in situ.
We are living in a Golden age of the Fourth Doctor. It will be fitting if that continues through the 50th Anniversary and hopefully beyond.

That might be a good idea if you added FDA Series 6 to it as well. I think it's really interesting hearing mid-season releases to see how they change the overall tone and quality of that season.

Purgatory 12:
So the ninth series of the 4DA's brings us the 'delights' of the S18 TARDIS team and four part Fourth Doctor stories again. The four part story is a format that certainly allows Purgatory 12 to develop and give us a really strong story, I'm not sure you could fit it all in to 60 mins. I did think Purgatory 12 was a bit of a strange story at first but by the end it turned out to be a solid Fourth Doctor adventure that was very enjoyable. Purgatory 12 is a prison and the old me would have said it's the best place to put Romana II and Adric, as I never liked either character back in the day! However, Romana isn't as bossy here, whilst Adric is too busy grieving over his brother to be the annoying brat we got to see on the TV. The Doctor is on tip top form as always though and the Fourth Doctor is still the king when it comes to BF Doctor Who audio stories. A solid start to the ninth series and Purgatory 12 gets a 4/5 from Supreme Command.
Chase the Night:
I like trains, so a spaceship that is a train that has to keep running in the dark has a weird appeal to me. Chase the Night is a different type of story than Purgatory 12 as it's very simple at base level. Nobody here is intent on destroying the Universe, they just want to survive! So we hear how the characters react to the situation they are in and take the - sometimes tough - choices they need to take to avoid death in the daylight. Romana was very strong in this story and Chase the Night could definitely fit into S18. It's an excellent story that was very pleasing to listen to with some great ideas and really good performances from all. For me Chase the Night is the best of these two 9A stories, so I give it a 5/5 rating.
Combined these two Fourth Doctor stories deliver an awesome start to the ninth series of the 4DA's, roll on 9B.

Hello
Crashed ships. E-Space is filled with. The three television episodes had stranded ships of one sort or another. And two of these stores focus around crashed ships, with Purgatory 12 having one for spice. I wonder what the thinking is for this? Purgatory 12 and Chase the Night indicate that civilizations do exist, yet Big Finish has chosen isolated communities. I suppose it does develop a universe that seems young and lonely.
It appears that the four stories are an arch that links State of Decay, and concludes with Warrior's Gate. Romana's statement of future intent at the end of Chase the Night "might" explain her future reason for parting.
My thoughts reflect Stevo's with regards to Adric and Romana's representation; Lalla Ward found again that - hyper-intelligent warmth tinged steel that made her such an interesting equal to the Doctor. Somehow Aric seems to have matured into an awed space wanderer.
Matthew Waterhouse's insights about this period of Doctor Who and how it never was fully realized, and how his time travelling alone with the Doctor was rushed brings forth the obvious question: Does Keeper of Traken allow room for prior adventures?

I listened to these over the weekend, despite having a massive BF backlog, and I'm pretty glad I let it jump the queue as it was a really solid listen. I think with this series going to the 4-parter and being explicitly set in quite a short time of TV Who it makes sense that it doesn't go too out there as it, more than a lot of the 4DAs, should feel of a piece with it's respective seasons. I think the one hour stories often don't feel like TV era Tom but that's fine as it's expanding the storytelling and giving us something new. Yet I think rightly this is "Let's try and write proper E-Space stories" almost like they were pitching directly for the season. They could almost be Lost Stories if we didn't know better - that's how seamless these fit. I should say I went in 100% cold and didn't listen to a trailer or even read a synopsis. Untill I downloaded it from my account I even forgot it was 4-parters. Purgatory 12 gave us a nice spin on the prison planet trope as it kinda mixed that with the powerful entity that controls the fate of the people. Adric as the petulant kid works so much better here than later on as this story rightly gets that the kid is struggling with massive grief and he's been thrown into a universe bigger than he's ever imagined without time to take in what happened to his brother. The show never gave Adric that moment to remember and I love that we get it here. I wonder if Lalla struggled with the bit where she had to tell Adric she really liked him I adored some of the dialogue here actually. Tom's " Scraya, you look marvellous - last time I saw you, you were dead! ". Scraya "We are the unforgiven" , Doctor "Oh..you must forgive me". And pretty much Tom's whole eulogy for K9. His "He never had a bad word for anyone. I mean..he would shoot attackers on sight but even then...never a bad word for anyone". Just fantastic. Marc Platt's been a fave writer for a million years and he "gets" Who. From when to go trad to when to break the boundaries he knows what's needed. Chase The Night gave me Snowpiercer vibes with the perpetual train moving round the world, I can't imagine that wasn't at least somewhere in Jonathan Morris' mind when coming up with the premise. The story itself was no great shakes but like others I enjoy that this is a story of survival more than anything else. No madman looking for power or crazy schemes. I did half expect some kind of cliffhanger ending maybe to bridge the A-B gap but nothing doing. That's fine though. We're buying it anyway! Also...JANE ASHER as Pilot. I couldn't believe it when I heard that cast list. I mean Jane is more than just her acting CV, she's an icon of British pop culture from the 60s way back when she was Paul McCartney's girlfriend at the height of Beatlemania. Synonymous with swinging London but she's been acting since Hammer's first Quatermass Xpermiment in 1955 through hip films like the great Deep End and the iconic Alfie. Am I the only one who kinda lost my mind Jane Asher was here doing an actual Doctor Who? I even ate Jane Asher brand biscuits as a kid Yes...Lalla is too harsh sounding in her dialogue a lot of the time to address many of the previous remarks. You almost have to accept that now. She's stuck in President Romana mode now, I don't think flirty schollgirl outfitted Romana II is coming back any time soon! So two nice authentic stories that with really minimal work could slot right into E-Space if that arc was longer on telly. As it is, it's nice to have them on audio. Not as revelatory as the Ann Kelso arc last year...but it's not trying to be. It's just doing old-school Doctor Who really well...and it does.

Really enjoyed Purgatory 12. Absolutely adored Chase the Night. Finally a release that feels like a perfect Season 18 story. Morris has now managed to create perfect representations of Season 16 (Auntie Matter), 17 (Paradox Planet/Legacy of Death), 18 (Chase the Night) & 19 (Psychodrome).
Can't wait to hear Volume 2 next month. The Quest of the Engineer sound particularly intriguing.
