Maybe i wasn't in the correct mindset but i struggled with Purgatory, maybe i need listen to it again when I'm able to concentrate & take in what's going on.

Sometimes it happens mate, at times you really have to be in the right mood for audio, and others in a certain mood for certain stories. I often look through my list and think 'nah, not at the moment'

Chase The Night, thoroughly enjoyed this story, the main characters were given plenty to do, the plot was engaging & i loved the idea of a train trying to outrun the day cycle it's usually night time where bad things occur.
Only quibble the William Shatner over the top acting by Jane Asher (Pilot Dena) in the story's climax, tone it down a notch Jane.
4/5

Purgatory 12:
So the ninth series of the 4DA's brings us the 'delights' of the S18 TARDIS team and four part Fourth Doctor stories again. The four part story is a format that certainly allows Purgatory 12 to develop and give us a really strong story, I'm not sure you could fit it all in to 60 mins. I did think Purgatory 12 was a bit of a strange story at first but by the end it turned out to be a solid Fourth Doctor adventure that was very enjoyable. Purgatory 12 is a prison and the old me would have said it's the best place to put Romana II and Adric, as I never liked either character back in the day! However, Romana isn't as bossy here, whilst Adric is too busy grieving over his brother to be the annoying brat we got to see on the TV. The Doctor is on tip top form as always though and the Fourth Doctor is still the king when it comes to BF Doctor Who audio stories. A solid start to the ninth series and Purgatory 12 gets a 4/5 from Supreme Command.
Chase the Night:
I like trains, so a spaceship that is a train that has to keep running in the dark has a weird appeal to me. Chase the Night is a different type of story than Purgatory 12 as it's very simple at base level. Nobody here is intent on destroying the Universe, they just want to survive! So we hear how the characters react to the situation they are in and take the - sometimes tough - choices they need to take to avoid death in the daylight. Romana was very strong in this story and Chase the Night could definitely fit into S18. It's an excellent story that was very pleasing to listen to with some great ideas and really good performances from all. For me Chase the Night is the best of these two 9A stories, so I give it a 5/5 rating.
Combined these two Fourth Doctor stories deliver an awesome start to the ninth series of the 4DA's, roll on 9B.
Fantastic overview of these stories Stevo.

My take on Purgatory 12 and Chase the Night is now up at CultBox - enjoyed the former, loved the latter!

Finally listened to Chase the Night, but before I start on that, a few words about how much I loved the extras - particularly Tom Baker's enthusiasm and how he prepares to record multiple stories at the same time. Wonderful!
I loved Purgatory 12, I love Chase the Night. Outside of Christopher Hamilton Bidmead's eccentric influence, this is, I think, as close to the feel of Series 18 of the show as you could get. My admiration in particular to Tom. Here, he seems very happy to tap into his more sombre, less jokey turn as the Doctor that was influenced, rather against his will at the time, by the insistences of JNT and his Script Editor. Here, he is just as enthusiastic as ever to play the Doctor as more of a background character, with no jokes (except right at the end) or witticisms, and I take my hat of to him for that. In fact, everyone here is great. Just hearing the cast list of Tom, Lalla, Matthew and John is wonderful.
The legendery, demure and beautiful Jane Asher throws herself heartily into the unglamorous role of Dena and I hope she had fun with the role. I certainly enjoyed hearing her.
The story is expertly balanced by Jonathan Morris, and the music by Jamie Robertson's music has wonderfully ethereal and sombre echoes of the time, which is ironically, joyful!
I've really enjoyed this foray into E-Space and cannot wait for the second set.

Finally got round to Purgatory 12. I loved it. A big concept that wouldn’t be out of place in Season 18, specifically the E-Space trilogy, and is given the time to breathe. Great parts for our leads and each of them get their chance to shine.
Adric is written really well here; Marc Platt absolutely gets that he’s a grieving kid that’s overwhelmed by his sudden involvement with the Doctor. Romana is written sympathetic to Adric, which is lovely, and I thought Lalla was pretty good on the whole - I certainly wouldn’t say she was entirely President Romana.
I loved Tom’s performance in this, particularly his eulogy for K9 and his speech to Adric towards the end about life; I imagine Tom associated with that a great deal.
Can’t wait to get stuck into Chase the Night.

I think Chase the Night is potentially the first Fourth Doctor Adventure where I’d seriously consider it to be in the top five productions that Big Finish have done with Tom as the Doctor.
This is a story of survival, where the stakes get higher with each part of the story. I don’t think The Pilot is over the top, she’s clearly desperate and paranoid throughout, which comes to a head in part four. I think she’s definitely got vibes of Tilda Swinton’s character in Snowpiercer, which is a brilliant watch if you haven’t seen it. Chris Evans and John Hurt are in it and the film is finally getting some traction thanks to being put on Netflix recently and also Parasite’s big win at the Oscars. I would imagine Snowpiercer was part of Jonathon Morris’ inspirations when writing Chase the Night.
The resolution of the story was nice and high concept and wouldn’t go amiss in Season 18, making it nice and authentic, much like Purgatory 12. I’m impressed how both stories manage to balance the involvement of our TARDIS crew; they’re probably one of the oddest and unique teams in the entire show.
Everything firing on all cylinders in this one. It’s been a cracking set - I’m looking forward to getting round to 9B at some point.

Purgatory 12 done. An interesting idea but I've never liked Adric & this story didn't change that, still such an annoying character. Oh well on to the next story which sounds really interesting.

I've only listened to Purgatory so far and liked it a lot except for one thing. I've had a problem with Lala Ward's Romana for a while but she was almost painful to listen to in this. Am I the only one who thinks this? I don't mean to be mean but it's like she's getting worse the longer she does this character. You are not alone. I find the version she does of Romana traveling with 4 so shrill, so harsh and so smug that it is difficult to listen to. I mentioned it in another thread but Lala Ward almost completely ruined the recent Legacy of Time box set for me. I thought I’d give myself a treat and started to listen to these stories...I thought wrong. Purgatory was a good name for it. There was much I didn’t like about the story, but I am very sorry to say that the worse thing about it was Lalla Ward’s portrayal of Romana. I don’t know what she and the director were thinking. They certainly weren’t thinking about their loyal listeners. I am really rather sad.

Just finished episode 1 of Chase the Night and just had to say that I do not like them lying about crashing there. It seems that it will create needless conflict. I am still looking forward to seeing how things evolve.

I finished Chase the Night yesterday. I still don't like them lying so much, but I guess it was there so the easy solution would be eliminated. I was quite surprised with the whole gestalt solution to the crew problem. There were some nice cliffhangers.
