I had an item I wanted to post in the convention forum, but I saw that I lacked the proper permissions to create a post. Is that by design, or is it an issue with the forum and/my account?

It's definitely by design. Only moderators and admins can add calendar events. If you'd like to add an event, let us know the details and we can post it for you. Or if you post it yourself and either send a link to the post or tag one of us, I believe we can edit it to add it to the forum calendar.
