I bought these from Big Finish on CD when they originally came out, and really enjoyed them. Happy to be able to get them in download now so via the app. I still have my CDs.

So glad the rights issue is resolved. That's this weekend sorted.

I do wish they had broken up this release into two downloads and not one 8 hour download. No fears....one main download but each individual episode separated with their cover artwork

Hello again.
Just listened to the deal of the week The Comeback. Absolutely marvellous to hear Elisabeth Sladen actually engaged in her training as an investigative reporter. It was an interesting story and sets up the series nicely. I hope to purchase more when funds permit. I was so pleased when I heard this had been made available on download.
I'm really glad too that Elisabeth Sladen was given the spinoff she deserved before her glorious return in School Reunion and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

I think it was a series that gets tighter and definitely more enjoying in the second series where they seem to have a definite direction but it works and it is Sarah Jane and Lis carries it well .There are great little references to the past adventures and one major one.So good that something in her past comes back to haunt her .David Bishop really kicks some real life into the series I wonder where Bf would have taken the series if it had continued on audio am sure it would have been nothing like Bannerman Road.

I've tried to listen to these on more than one occasion, but I always have trouble with them for some reason. As much as I love Elizabeth Sladen I just can't get into these. They're not bad, but they don't grab and hold my attention as much as I want them to. In the past I had listened to a few of them our of order so now I am trying it from the beginning. I finished the first two this week and I'll keep going and hope that they pick up for me.

So I'm four stories in and I still feel like something is missing. And I think I've figured it out. There isn't any joy in these. I don't get the feeling that Sarah or her friends get any enjoyment from these adventures. They are dark and miserable. When Nat decided to leave all I could think of was "good for her". Sarah used to love her life, now I get the feeling that she's just trying to get through it alive. Not really what I think of when I think about Sarah Jane Smith. I'll probably keep listening, cause why not? But they don't hold a candle to the Sarah Jane Adventures, and I usually think BF does stories better than TV. Ah well.

Yeah, I take your point about tone and how it can be jarring compared to the SJA show. These came out before the television spinoff so I was listening to them at the time as an intense drama. For what it's worth, I think the second series is miles ahead of the first one. It's all by one writer, sends SJS all over the world, ties into classic DW mythology while building out its own as well. It feels like a big budget upgrade and is one I still revisit every few years.

No, I'm comparing them to the Sarah Jane Smith that travelled with the Doctor. That SJS was able to face the darkness of The Wirrn, Sontarans, Davros and the Daleks, and all the rest while still enjoying the adventure and finding humor when she could. The Sarah Jane in these can't even share a joke with Josh. I will listen to the second season and hope I enjoy it more than the first.

I really like the SJS series, and because I've not seen hardly any DW or other stuff with her in I dont have anything to compare it to. May starts relisten now have some time off work.

I personally couldn't get into the War Master because it was just bleak and dark for me. So yeah, perhaps it might be easier to consider this as an alt-SJS whose life took a different path after parting ways from the Doctor. Her general vibe is similar for Series 2, so even though the writing and production and overall style goes bigger, you may still not click with this slightly colder version of the character. I personally found it interesting and the style and tone that BF created for Sarah is what convinced Elisabeth Sladen to revisit the character in the first place. "Test of Nerve" was my favorite from Series 1, so when I saw that David Bishop was going to craft Series 2, I was all in. But it's all subjective.
As Auntie Vanessa told her niece, "if you stop enjoying it, give it up." Not worth pushing through if it's not working for you. So much other great stuff waiting to (re)discover!

I plowed through these stories over the last several days. I've had them in my account for a while, bought the releases individually years ago (when Comeback was CD only) and just never got around to listening to them. Fantastic set of stories. I wasn't sure initially, but as I got through each successive story it began to get more interesting, By the time I got to the last few episodes, I couldn't stop listening till I got to the end. I have to admit I didn't remember who Ms. Winters was. The story seemed to assumed prior knowledge of who she was, and perhaps it was mentioned in an early story and I didn't catch it, but I just googled it (a little belatedly) and now I know. Not remembering her past with Sarah Jane Smith, however, did not detract from my enjoyment of the stories. Spoilers ahead. {Spoiler}I was surprised how trusting Sarah Jane was of Josh in the first episode, especially since it seemed she was constantly moving house to avoid getting caught by whoever she thought was tracking her or was out to get her. Also, it was never clear to me how Nat joined her, seemed as though suddenly she was there helping Sarah Jane, along with Josh. The Orbus Postramo sure sounded like a weird cult. Not that we haven't heard tell of some weird cults in real life. Jacqueline Pearce was delicious as The Keeper. I didn't really realize it was her till Fatal Consequences, as she didn't have a lot of lines to speak till that episode. That was when I recognized her voice. She was so good at projecting a sense of power and evil and had the best voice. The revealed story details in Dreamland really took me by surprise. I never saw that coming. And they leave it up in the air as to whether Sarah Jane Smith died or not. I like to imagine that the Doctor showed up and rescued her at the last minute. In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed the set. This will be one to re-listen to in the future to pick up more of the details in the story line.

I love this series, partly because it is a bit rough and ready (fretless bass refrain anyone?) and also because it isn't sci-fi. Imagine if they had decided to go down a similar road in Edwardian England for Charlie Pollard? Egyptian cults in London, terror in Limehouse, the fog killer, the mystery of Reverend Carter, the thing in the woods....I could go on forever!

I doubt I would buy a similar series based on Charlie Pollard. She was pretty good with the Eighth Doctor, at least initially, but I'm not a huge fan of the character in general and never bought the Charlotte Pollard box sets.
