The show is coming back in 2021 NOT 2022. Yes, and if it comes back at Christmas...does that one week of 2021 make a real difference worth arguing the toss over? The show according to Tracie Simpson is going to be filming for 10 months. It started in November 2020. So if - and that's in the middle of a worsening pandemic which has already hit one of the regulars in John Bishop - if the show keeps to the deadline that takes us to September. The show needs post production after that of course. S12 finished filming on 19th November 2019 to hit January 2020's debut, which of course is before lockdown meant the post-production wasn't being done remotely. So October and November seem more than a bit optimistic. So we're looking at December at the earliest. I'd suggest you'll see John Bishop while you're having Christmas dinner as they're not going to launch in December and not have it be a Christmas ratings grab. Even then, if the show needs more time, they're not going to put it out early just because a teaser trailer said they had to. When they responded to rumours the show would be in 2022, the answer was “We’re still hoping for a 2021 airdate, but this may depend on other circumstances.” (source: Radio Times) - I'd imagine lockdowns, COVID outbreaks and the like are just the kind of circumstances they mean. So very late 2021 or early 2022 - I can't see that it makes a difference. I'm just hoping it's done safely and that John Bishop and his wife recover well as he really seems to have had a bad case of COVID, certainly in the post-contagious after effects.

I'd also think Jo Martin's reveal, far from upstaging Jodie, was a real kick up the backside for the show and just the sort of RTD rug-pull that actually got people talking about the show again. It was trending all night on Twitter which does not happen with the show now. I can see why people think Jodie was upstaged as a decision was clearly made to have Jo Martin very "Doctorish" - clean TARDIS, future but retro clothing etc - yet to me that was shorthand so she gets accepted as The Doctor straight away with a limited amount of screentime. She had what? 10mins to make her mark? If she came in less obviously The Doctor, we'd only have gotten "It's The Master", "It's The Rani", "It's Rassilon", It's Susan", "It's Chancellor Flavia" (Well, OK - maybe only I want that one). No must admit I thought it was Flavia 😂😂😂 Perhaps am just a very fair minded person-But when I saw front page copies of JO MARTIN IS The Doctor I just thought “that’s not nice at all” I get that they had to make an impact ,yes it got people talking but I still hold to it that it was disrespectful in a way to Jodie and believe me am no fan of the new era but have gotten on with life and accepted what they have done. I think if they had went with a bad ass Male Doctor I would have felt better for Jodie.Mind you that’s me mind reading what Jodie felt about the decision(we will never know). I think one of the reasons you are feeling that way is that Ruth turns up and completely upstages Jodie and steals the show. I myself was thinking "Uh-oh".
But I also immediately thought- why could we not have had her? She is so much better! Maybe Jodie is the perfect actress for quiet roles and for small minded slapstick, but Jo Martin nailed the fun bit and the gravitas for me. I immediately loved the attitude, the TARDIS and of course the costume (I am still not a fan of Jodie's costume). Maybe they made a mistake in bringing Ruth in, but for me, that mistake was to show me something BETTER.

But...Jo Martin IS The Doctor, it's not as though there's a lie there. I'd say doing something entirely new (and this was before we found out some answers in the finale) and giving us an unseen Doctor was exciting and that seeing it on front pages shows how much it got people going. I don't see any disrespect whatsoever and I think you're taking umbrage on Jodie's behalf when I'm quite sure she wouldn't. In fact I'd say your idea of a badass male Doctor is far worse as you'd be appealing to the dregs who only tuned out because of the gender switch. I'd rather not give them any hope there's a "better" Doctor for them waiting in the wings. And again, she HAD to upstage Jodie for audiences to believe she's The Doctor. It's exactly the same as David Morrisey doing a total pastiche of all the classic Doctors he remembered in The Next Doctor. You have to sell the audience on the new Doctor if they've got limited screen time other wise there's no suspension of disbelief. We'd all have been saying "No, she's not THe Doctor..who is she really?". Just like every new Bond of the last 40 years got a badass opening scene to sell the audience on them - Dalton in Gibraltar, Pierce with Sean Bean on the damn, Craig in black and white then going straight into parkour. It's audience shorthand so that people buy what you're selling quickly.

I agree that it's going to be tough, but you are missing the fact that they have also cut the episode count down to 8, a tardis crew of 3 rather than 4 and hopefully Bishops schedule is easier to manage than Walsh's (which is part of why they last two series took so long to film).

A guest actor being written intriguingly and played well is not comparable to a man being deprived of the money he used to feed his family. At all. Maybe they should have got a worse actor in and written her poorly.....we're in Wonderland here!

Personally I loved Jo Martin but she didn't upstage Jodie at all, she was just a welcome addition. I think it was mainly fans that didn't take to Jodie who preferred Jo. But if the first BAME doctor is basically just a plot twist then I think it does Jo Martin a disservice. Hopefully she will be back full time.

Chris Chibnall himself said that was done because of new restrictions meaning it would take much longer to film the individual episodes this year. It's not like they've just cut 1/5th of the worktime out.

Agree 100%. Look no further BBC, the next Doctor has already proved she's the one. Just give her the TARDIS key! But She's Pre Hartnell whether we like it or not! (Well until different when Chibs leaves probably) Regards mark687 My dear Chestert...ummm..@mark867. Wasn't there a line toward the end of "The Day of the Doctor" that revealed that in the time between the Eleventh Doctor and the Curator and having finally gained some control over his/her ability to regenerate, the Doctor had revisited "a few, but just the old favourites"? And doesn't the Curator himself prove that point? Is the way not already open for the Ruth Doctor to return as the fourteenth incarnation? Hmmm? *squints through eyeglass, grabs lapels and looks insufferably pleased* 😉

Peter Davison too didn't like it, but Colin especially was more than a bit....miffed...at Tom's inclusion (or rather..their exclusion).

Well this may throw some fuel on a few fires - seems like bishop would have bit their hand off for the doctor who role deadline.com/2021/01/john-bishop-closes-production-company-lola-entertainment-1234664269/ 'Lola Entertainment has been the vehicle through which Bishop has produced a number of his own projects, including BBC One’s The John Bishop Show, UKTV’s John Bishop: In Conversation With…, and ITV’s John Bishops Ireland.
The company also co-produced scripted shows, including the BBC’s BAFTA-winning series Detectorists, starring Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones, and the Worzel Gummidge series of specials for BBC One.
Bishop and his Lola co-director, the agent Lisa Thomas, are winding up the company voluntarily. Creditors have been invited to submit proof of their debts by January 11 should they require repayment. The liquidation is being overseen by accountancy firm Cowgills.
According to Lola’s most-recent accounts for the year to November 2019, the company owed creditors £61,429 ($84,145). It had capital and reserves of £1.26M ($1.73M) and did not employ a single permanent member of staff over the year.
The closure of Lola marks an eventful few weeks for Bishop. The comedian announced that he and his wife tested positive for coronavirus on Christmas Day, revealing that the virus was the “worst illness I have ever had.” Bishop was also unveiled as the new star of Doctor Who over the weekend."
