I generally post while visiting my mother at weekends but with lockdown and social distancing I have not visited since March. This week I'm here using the social bubble rules (equiped with a face mask) though it may be a while before I'm back every week. By an odd coincidence, on the Tuesday at the beginning of lockdown I was sick with some bug but it did not have the covid symptoms so probably something else. One day in bed, the rest of the week recovering. Following week, back to the office - I'm in payroll and our customers include councils, police forces, a major retail chain which was still open, etc - so still work to do with new rules for statutory sick pay and furloughing to be coded. tested and fixed plus the "usual" problems like Scottish teachers getting a month's negative pay because they had a pay rise in April (!??). It was spooky in an almost empty office with the majority of people working from home and I couldn't because I don't have home internet. On Thursday they finally located the 4Gee thingamy for me to work from home and in the afternoon started taping off my wing because one of the cleaners had been off the previous night with a cough. Since then, I've been working from home. I am allowed some personal use of the company's internet but it does not include posting on forums so I've been lurking here every day. It's hard for me to remember these days that there are some people that don't have internet connections in their homes. I can't imagine getting through the last few months without it. Glad to have you in whatever capacity you can get here.

I went to Uni at B'th over 20 years back and never saw the antisocial behaviour that is going on at the moment. Trouble is, its going on all over the country at the moment. I was at Richmond, N Yorks yesterday and things were pretty tense down by the falls. Actually saw one family park on the last bit of double yellow lines, they pointed and took note at the car they had completely blocked in, and the Mother who was driving, smirked approvingly and indicated 'good' to her family, as if potential aggro would make the day - they and the two vehicles alongside directly over the 'keep clear' markings had actually blocked in seven legally parked vehicles. Which were stuck there till whenever they felt like coming back themselves. And its always the same type - go to a beauty spot and leave your rubbish, glass bottles, nappies, plastic bags, laughing gas canisters etc, where you were sat, despite the availability of bins, for either the wildlife, or local volunteers to clean up after you.

My brother has the first part of his wedding on Saturday. In Germany, weddings are usually 2 day affairs- on the first day, the official side of things is done at the town hall and the second day is wedding at the church. Both days there is huge parties and celebrating and too much food and alcohol. Normally. In an age without COVID. Reality- we will meet at 10 am the town hall, only my brother and his to be wife, the witnesses and the parents are allowed in. We will wait in front of the building wearing face masks. When they come out, we will have a small family BBQ in my brothers garden since the village restaurant is still not allowed to host larger family groups. Compared to my sister's wedding who had invited 200 guests and they had to hire the village gym hall to accommodate everyone... this is very sad. I feel very sorry for them. Sadly my brother and his to be wife were not able to postpone to next year for financial reasons.
The church wedding part will take place in September. If there is no second wave. Which might cause the churches to be shut again.

Well, time for me to chip in with better news: Global recovery rate is at 5,239,070, close to 5mill more than the death rate. Remember, however grim it looks, more people are getting better than not: www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/www.statista.com/statistics/1087466/covid19-cases-recoveries-deaths-worldwide/US firm Ridgeback is developing an antiviral pill, targeting people who have milder symptoms. It has cleared Phase 1 trials, meaning it's safe and if it works, could be the biggest weapon in the arsenal, beside a vaccine: www.ft.com/content/488e19cc-5fdc-4135-8441-372c86a30bcdwww.fiercebiotech.com/biotech/ridgeback-tests-covid-19-antiviral-for-patients-hospital-and-at-homeResearchers at Tulane University in the US are developing an artificial antibody, a protein called MDR504, to neutralize the virus. It has shown success in cell cultures and they hope to move to a Phase 1 trial soon. Needless to say, an antibody that could be made-to-order would be a great help: news.tulane.edu/pr/tulane-university-researchers-develop-synthetic-antibody-against-covid-19
Meanwhile, researchers at Lawson Health Research Institute and Western University in Canada found six molecules that had greater profile in severe patients (cytokine storm). Therapies and treatments targeting these six could bring down mortality:

Its that Stupidity that makes me worried about going back to work Soul destroying isn't it? One of the beach-goers interviewed has said "It's probably going to cause a second wave. People are just doing what they want." Incredible. The government are 'reluctant' to close the beaches down - which means they either know something we don't, or they are allowing peoples' stupidity to expose them to the pandemic.
Regarding returning to work, I'm diabetic and had two weeks off at the beginning of the pandemic, but have been turning up ever since. If your workplace has sensible precautions in place, and you can distance yourself from others, you will be a good deal safer than these idiots! Best wishes.

We're all doomed Dooomed! ( Private Frazer) 33 tonnes collected from Bournemouth Coastline overnight, though, plus 8 tonnes between the piers alone the night before. I guess they would normally be doing this abroad instead....

Now it's Australia's turn to be derp derps :-( News reports just came out an hour ago officially that about 1/3 of returning people who live in Australia are refusing to be tested.. Not sure if they realise it's a free test.. Bloody hell the testing centre is literally a 5-10 minute drive from my house! Cases are increasing big time in Victoria and NSW with the interstate border restrictions scheduled to be lifted July 20th.. Keep your stinky pandemic out of my home state we don't want u! Also, NSW are now implementing a 24 day self isolation.. We have had 2 cases on "compassionate grounds" where they let foreigners into Australia to see a dying relative.. and they both had it and spread it! .. GGRRRR
My hometown has gone 31 days without a new case.. that's expected to be stopped very soon.
:-(

Hello again.
It is very sad that a minority of people seem determined to wreck things for everyone else. Whether it's leaving an awful mess behind when they visit a beauty spot or drinking too much and causing trouble. I'm afraid a second wave is all but inevitable, in my part of the UK things have been bad but nowhere near as bad as in the cities. With the lockdown easing, there will be hordes of visitors coming down here, which will be good for local businesses but, will they keep up with social distancing and think about the locals? Every year there tends to be some people seem to think that they can go in the sea whenever abnd whereever they like and ignore the advice of the RNLI lifeguards.
I wish everyone well in their respective countries and hope that sanity prevails and we are all saved from the awful consequences of a second wave. Take care, stay safe and as I'm sure you will be kind.

That there are people working hard, getting us out of this situation. It's slow and nothing is fully guaranteed, but we are getting better at this and treatments are coming. More people are recovering than dying. Scientists, doctors, nurses, frontline workers - a lot of good is being done, and I say to people like doc and daver who are worried - things are changing.

Hello again. Yes, Nucleus of the swarm, your bright spot updates are very necessary and interesting. Thank you for providing this as it does, I presume, require some necessary research. Thank you. It is good that there are dedicated professionals working tirelessly behind the scenes. I am thankful for their dedication. Oh and by the way, "Kindly refrain from addressing me as doc!"

Watching too much news again. Not only 2nd wave incoming but more evidence about what the Tory party values, historically they bailed out the banks, more recently they gave the owner of a pub chain a £48 million loan & yet they have done nothing for the arts. What type of country will we be living in after the second wave?

What type of country will we be living in after the second wave? It is not the second wave. This is still the first wave.
A second wave is when all infections die down and then the infection comes back for a second year. See Spanish Flu epidemic.
What we have here, what they call a "second wave", is nothing else than a badly managed, badly suppressed first wave. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But we ain't seen nothing yet.
