I can't take credit for coming up with this, it's something I saw on Twitter earlier today and thought might be kind of fun. The premise is simply: You're in an alternate universe where Doctor Who didn't start in 1963. The year is now 2020, and the Third Doctor (or whichever Doctor!) era of Doctor Who is happening for the first time ever. You, the TV god(dess) know in advance all the stories of this era, but nobody else does, it will all be brand-new for viewers at home. Which 2020-contemporary actors do you cast as the Doctor and his/her companions? Example: The Doctor (Hugh Laurie) and Jo (Emily Atack) face down the Doctor's oldest enemy, The Master (Ian McShane) in a hellish battle in The Daemons, airing this Sunday! ...I didn't say it was a good example, but you get the idea

I'll go right back to An Unearthly Child since..you know - it's the start! The Doctor - Emma Thompson: Amazingly 5 years older than Hartnell was in '63 but could do the stern thing without seeming to alienate anyone or become unlikeable. Susan - Bella Ramsey: An actual teenager as a teenager! Already got much cult love from being young Lady Mormont in Game Of Thrones. Ian - Ben Daniels. An older Ian, yeah, but I think he'd be a better fit for the family unit dynamic. Barbara - Thandie Newton - You want someone who can do kind, smart and also be unafraid to bring The Doctor down a peg or two, get Thandie. Though she'd also be a good Doctor, just not for this era. I actually think Lee Ingleby would be your perfect Ian but he and Thandie were just married in the last series of Line Of Duty so didn't want to just nick that, and didn't want to lose Thandie as Barbara as she's Thandie Newton - you don't drop her! SO someone else can have Lee Ingleby as Ian.

Hugh Laurie and Ian McShane continue to be on my most wanted lists for Doctor Who roles, so putting them as The Doctor and The Master would be brill.

Are you sitting comfortably, then we'll begin... (Every season happened, just not necessarily in the right order. )
