BF News Piece www.bigfinish.com/news/v/a-totally-tropical-torchwood-tale-is-out-nowGood story OK use of concept, but I prefer Female artists when experiencing proper tapes or vids of that nature,(Sir Michael is an interesting / instructive rather then relaxing voice to me), so I just kept thinking "Get on with the obvious plot" Had it been an old style teach yourself tape with Sir Michael the hook may've worked better, something like "How to Conquer Cardiff in 3 Easy Steps". I thought this was very clever. It reminded me a lot of "I am the Master"- only missing the ominous "You will obey me". Otherwise, it was a good story and certainly one of the more interesting and original BF releases. The performance worked very well, I thought. And yes, it becomes very dark, twisted and gruesome after a while, but that was what was to be expected. Good release. Even understandable and enjoyable for people who are not into Torchwood, like myself.

I too really enjoyed this! A very dark and quirky tale, and very, very sinister, with a magnetic performance by Sir Michael Palin.
It reminded me of Dark Shadows: House by the Sea, which is a big compliment. Spooky and subtle and suggestive with an ever-darkening tone as the narration progresses.
I’m a huge fan of the Torchwood audio range. I think it’s remarkable how Big Finish have refined and polished the TV incarnation and continue to experiment, with lovely and terrifying results. Recommended to all those who like their stories to send a chill down their spine!

I quite enjoyed that. A captivating story and a wonderful reading, and not too gruesome. (My luck, Martha Jones finally arrived at Big Finish and I haven't been able to get near that one yet for the advertised POV premise). Had it been an old style teach yourself tape with Sir Michael the hook may've worked better, something like "How to Conquer Cardiff in 3 Easy Steps". That would have been a great title but it might have given a bit away. At least I got to wonder for a little while what this was all about. :-)

Regards mark687 Yep, I can totally see what you mean. I absolutely loved this, but with anyone less engaging than someone of Michael Palin's standing, I would agree with you. The clincher for me is, it is not only someone of Michael Palin's standing, it's the man himself! And with such a wonderfully benevolent, relaxing voice as that, I was absolutely happy to sit back and enjoy the ride. Really good interview at the end as well. Once again, Mr Palin proves how effortlessly charming he is, particularly in his answer to the Doctor Who question. A great disc. Fun, dark and sinister. Torchwood remains a jewel in BF's crown. Big Finish - you will get your biscuits!

An interesting experiment. 'Not a favourite 'Main Range' release, but it was still an interesting experiment...

This did nothing for me at all. I found it dull, with very little to engage me, and Palin sounded laboured in his delivery. I wish I enjoyed it as much as everyone else, but to me it was a failed Experiment. Like a short trip running too long.
Although I did like 'Captain Jack, get in the ****ing sea'.

Long story short, I loved this one. Sir Michael Palin's voice is a delight to listen to and I really enjoyed how the gimmick slowly turned into something very dark. The ending is suitably gruesome and depressing for the "Listener/Character."
That's three really awesome episodes in a row with Fortitude and Dissected and now this one. I'm eagerly anticipating the next episode, given Owen is probably my favorite Torchwood member and it's his first solo outing since Burn Gorman made his debut 3 years ago (has it really been that long already ?)

I've only heard the fifteen-minute drama tease in the podcast, but I don't think it lived up to the promise of the trailer. Michael Palin sound rather sinister pretty much from the beginning; he's not awfully relaxy even before things start to go a bit odd.

Thought this was a lot of fun. A really interesting experiment and it’s essentially just a quirky and sustained monologue. Michael Palin is a real coup and a beautiful reader, but I understand where people are coming from; his performance, or his style of reading, perhaps lessens the impact that the story could have.
Interesting comments in the behind the scenes where it sounded like he was considered and offered to be in Jodie’s first series.

I loved it! I actually got on the floor and spent the first 10 min listening as described in the audio. Trippy! I loved Palin's voice. Maybe it's a male/female thing mark687, because I tend to prefer male voices in the few (very few) relaxation/ hypnosis audios I've listened to. I am someone that loves it when BF takes chances and experiments with medium, even if I don't love the story. Although they are usually some of my favorite stories they have produced. Creatures of Beauty, Scherzo, The History of Fear, Live 34 are some of my favorites. So kudos to @scotthandcock and crew for taking risks and pushing the range forward. Well done!

This was just lovely, I enjoyed every minute of it. Interesting story, a fun play on the format, and Palin's flawless delivery -- terrific.

Enjoyed that a lot. Superb casting, and great idea. And some ewww moments. One thing that I did find confusing was distinguishing between the parts Michael was playing . I found that a bit confusing. But otherwise well done.
