Some releases get a lot of exposure prior to release. They might get notable guest stars, either who are unexpected or play characters you're eager to hear. They get lots of advertising and plugging. Some stories are considered sacred by listeners, the pinnacle of what can collectively be achieved. Are there any stories that you got all pumped for, heard only great things about, but came out disappointed? Did knowing the reputation color your impression of the story?
For me, The Holy Terror. It's touted as one of the ultimate Big Finish experiences, but I couldn't even crack the first episode! To many it may be a stone-cold classic, but not me. For promotional hype, Return to Telos. I did have some apprehension because of the writer, but was willing to give it a go. It promised so much. The Fourth Doctor meets the Cybermen! Frazer Hines appears as Jamie! It goes back to Tomb of the Cybermen! It failed on all three counts for me, all I could think about was the wasted potential. Fate of Krelos was the first ever Big Finish I called boring.

Gallifrey IV and Zagreus. Overhyped so much that they were never going to live up to the expectation. Fortunately I didn't wait a year (?) for Gallifrey IV to come out so wasn't affected by the hype - same with Zagreus actually. Because I came to that party late, I missed the fan fallout and could just enjoy the stories. For me, I still think Zagreus is an excellent story, whereas I don't get The Holy Terror at all *ducks rotten fruit*.
Cheers

Definitely agree about Return to Telos...what a disappointment that was to me.
As for hyped stories by fans I can't really think of disliking ones. Maybe I like some a little less than others but I figure that is more a matter of taste. Certainly haven't regretted given any recommendations a try.

Anyone else see the letter in VORTEX praising Fate of Kerlos? To each their own.
Anyway
My chief offenders are Zagrus was expecting some thing celebratory ended up being the most depressing and nonsense BF release I own.
The Locum Doctors Trilogy twist revealed on the Cover months before release , stories seemed low-key and plodding to mark a significant achievement.

I think I was probably a little disappointed with Home Truths and Return to Telos, but only for letting my expectations run away with me really - and Zagreus, which probably had trouble living up to my expectations simply because it seems to be such an exercise in the unexpected?

Let's see. There's Master, which I found to be three episodes of brilliance followed by one episode, which my reaction to can be summed up as "What the dickens?" Mind, I wish there were more failures like that. There's also the the Rocket Men, which I went into with no knowledge of its reputation, and found to be an emotionally manipulative, predictable melodrama with a jumping chronology that seemed gratuitous and annoying; the Prisoner of Peladon, which almost everyone seems to like, but which made me rather annoyed with King Peladon and had a rather amusing attempt at a Third Doctor-version of the New Series' "the Doctor needs his companions"-shtick, which amounted to "He can be a bit rude, can't he?"; Dark Shadows' The Blind Painter, which others seems to like, but I thought was a melodrama which contrived, through gratuitously stupid character-actions and arbitrary rules of magic, to be tragic; The Oseidon Adventure, which seemed like glorified fan-fiction. There's also the Elite, which isn't at all bad, but I thought devolved into sound and fury once the "High Priest" bit the bucket , and possibly the Empathy Games, whose general reputation I am not completely aware of, but which seems to be well-regarded. On a much more positive note, speaking of a release that others here were disappointed by (I adored it,) I love how each episode of the Holy Terror emulates a different genre. The first behaves like an Aztec-style historical, the second like a straight-up farce (though of course, there's plenty of comedy throughout,) the third like a regular Doctor Who adventure, all before turning into a high-concept horror story in the fourth episode. EDIT: Oh, yeah, I wasn't very enamored of the first part of I, Davros. I thought it was trying too hard to be grim and macho, and came out rather stilted and two-dimensional as a result. Not to mention that the actors were rather variable. The lady playing Calcula was quite hammy and the chap playing young Davros didn't give the most convincing performance.

There have been a few that didn't live up to the hype for me, but that doesn't mean they were bad, or even that I didn't like them. Some stories just "OK", but their pre-release hype aggrandizes the story beyond what it provides. In this category, I'd include Jubilee, Last of the Cybermen, and Terror of the Sontarans. None of these releases was bad, and one of them I quite liked, but they didn't live up to the hype.
Some stories actually disappoint. Beyond failing to live up to the excessive hype, they fail at some fundamental level of storytelling or structure. Sixth Doctor: The Last Adventure epitomizes this category for me. Yes, Michael Jayston was wonderful; the first episode was excellent in its own right; the third story built tension; we had a wonderful new character in the fourth story; yet somehow the release as a whole felt like a letdown that could have done so much more.
Others stories do live up to the hype: Spare Parts, Chimes of Midnight, Cobwebs, Damaged Goods, and I could go on.

Actually I did think of a story that didn't live up to the hype for me...Love & War. I just didn't care for it at all. Probably why I haven't looked into other releases with Bernie even though she wasn't why I disliked the release.

I don't pay much attention to hype but if it does creep in and it one of those this-is-the-greatest-things-ever type deals I will push off seeing/watching/reading it for a time so that the heat wears off and I'm approaching something with a blank slate of expectations. I try my best to like or dislike something based on the material itself and not what has been said or written about it.

I try my best to like or dislike something based on the material itself and not what has been said or written about it. I've learned to be wary with stories marketed as the return of [insert character, monster, setting here] or sequel to a classic series story. It kind of takes away from enjoying said stories on their own merits rather than the expectations of quality based on the original story or returning element. Had Return to Telos kept the Tomb and Jamie bits a reveal for the story itself, it would have been a nice surprise, an unexpected cameo. Instead that was what it was marketed on, so I spent most of the story wondering where those elements would come in and how they would be incorporated into the story. It's like with movie trailers, you know a character will survive because there's a scene in the trailer with them that hasn't come up yet in the movie.

Solitaire didn't live up to the hype, for me. It was a good story and all, and I enjoyed listening to it, but after hearing it praised so much, repeatedly, it was less fabulous than I expected.
Then again, I'm not a huge fan of the Celestial Toymaker or Charlie.
