My take on Scorched Earth is now up at CultBox... as others have said, I wondered if this could have been a pure historical too.

I suppose throwing in a snarky comment about why the Doctor felt it was ok to spare the humans in France/Germany from the fire monster by sending it off to commit genocide on another planet isn't very appropriate at this time? Perhaps not, but it's the one thing that I felt was inconsistent in a tale about putting revenge aside.

I am pretty sure the Doctor knows that the Daleks can take care of themselves. There's a subtle layer of irony in that, isn't there? All the talk about historical circumstance and Flip and Connie having differing opinions and the Doctor sends the monster to The One Enemy He Can't Forgive. Another act of a vigilante... Intentional, chrischapman1981? If so, very clever! (If not, just nod along and pretend it was.)

Finally got around to this one yesterday. Quite good! I didn't love the fire monster, but the human drama and raw emotion of the setting were just wonderful. With just a few tweaks this could have been a fabulous pure historical (though I still liked it enough that I'm basically quibbling over 'this could have been a 10 instead of just an 8!' ) I especially liked how completely at loggerheads Constance and Flip were over the collaborator. My natural sympathy is to Constance's position, but Chris Chapman here wrote Flip's position, and Lisa played it so compellingly, that it did give me pause. Great stuff.

I've just listened to the first episode... WOW! Very emotionally powerful. In comparison to the earlier release, Subterfuge, this is the type of WWII release that I think works best. Not particularly jingoistic/all guns blazing and doesn't really show anyone emerging from the War in the best of light. The characters, so far, appear more rounded and less 'stockish' than may have otherwise been the case.
The disagreement with Flip and Constance is played well and allows you to see the contrasting positions clearly and both actresses do this really well. I love the softer Sixie here and Baker is great in this as well. This is the 6th Doctor we *should* have seen instead of the Sawardian bully...
Looking forward to listening to the rest of this. The first MR release that has held my attention fully since Warzone.

I've finished this one. Thought it was a very good listen and I enjoyed it. There was a lot there to make you think - I particularly liked how no-one came out of this one very heroic - the Resistance ended up looking far less perfect that at first glance, the collaborator ended up more sympathetic, Connie/Flip ended up seeing the merits in each other's arguments. Interestingly, even the Doctor doesn't come across well here - does he really have the right to send the fire beast to Skaro (and even Berlin) - Connie's anger at him for the cliff hanger of Part 3 is very powerful.
Characterisation carries this. It is a bit light on plot details if I'm honest (a minor criticism) but there is enough world-building to keep the listener entertained. Certainly a step up from Cry of the Vultures and probably the best release for the MR since Warzone/Conversion last year.

I really do think Chris Chapman has become one of the best writers the Sixth Doctor has ever had.

Okay I’m gonna say it: Flip and Connie are the new Evelyn Six is just a magnet for really good companions. Between Peri, Evelyn, Charley, Old Jamie, Brewster, Flip, Constance, and Mel, the only dud he's had was Brewster (who is probably the most unlikable character in the entire Doctor Who universe) 7/8 is an awesome record. Brewster.....I wanted to throttle the brat

I'll admit i was expecting a pure historical and i was a little disappointed when i found out it wasn't, however the story absolutely exceeded my expectations.
Very much one of my favourite releases this year.

Well am just finished on episode 3 and I will be honest I totally like that it isn’t purely historical .Yes it could go that direction and worked equally well...but somehow am glad it didn’t . this is a great script and this Team really work well as a Team more than they did in their solo adventures in my opinion though I did enjoy those two solo. Well onwards to the Finale. Hopefully this will become a well played trilogy when I get to Lovecraft haven’t had a trilogy that was as entertaining in a while

Agree with you anything that does give you pause to think...is welcome...so far am giving it a 9 based on 3 episodes ...hopefully it stays that high 😂

So much was said about this release before I ever got to it, not sure I have much to add. Maybe Constance's initial reaction was natural from her point of view and the time period but it rubbed me the wrong way, to be honest. Things are not so black and white, and the continuation of the story kind of brings that out.
Interesting story overall.
