I loved everything about this set. You can tell Derek Jacobi and Paul McGann are having a ball playing off of each other. The twist was done very well. I made an audible gasp when it was revealed, yet it was so apparent if you really thought about it. The guest cast was terrific. I loved Colin McFarlane and would be very happy to have Morski as a recurring character of some sort (And we finally have a really good American accent! It was a refreshing change after the TLV release.)
Both the animated trailer and the audio one (with Jo and Nyssa) for Killing Time are terrific. I'm really looking forward to the next set. And I'll be listening to this one again soon. This range is a gift to Doctor Who fans!

I listened to the first episode yesterday, it was quite enjoyable but as some of you have said above, I will need to listen to the rest to make up my mind, as it is only an introduction. {Spoiler} The War Master is either badly mischaracterized, like Narvin was in the previous volume - he looked like he came from the early seasons of Gallifrey where he was a complete bastard - or the Master has finally succeeded in swapping his mind with the Doctor, and I'm eager to hear Paul McGann as a villain.

"I'd have thought that was obvious."
Yup, called it. Brilliant twist.

"I'd have thought that was obvious." Yup, called it. Brilliant twist. Ahaha... same. At the halfway point I can't quite decide if it was too obvious or not. I feel like Jacobi's acting could have sold the twist, alone, without all the clumsiness in the script (so many UPRs!). Definitely looking forward to seeing how the back half of this set turns out... I do hope !cGann shows up in 5.3 and isn't just confined in the last episode.

I know this is irrelevant to the plot, but... {Spoiler} Absolutely love the extended theme music at the end of The Cognition Shift. They should definitely release it as a separate track! {Spoiler} I think this needs to be a full and formal discussion. We need a big fat single on the iTunes.

Just listened to the first two stories and really enjoyed them, I'll give more thoughts once I've finished the whole thing. I've got a question about episode 1 and wondered if people might know the answer. {Minor Spoiler for episode 1} Is the place where Illa recognises the Master from a reference to anything? I had thought it might've been to the Rage of the Time Lords but I'm terrible at remembering planet names so don't know if it was a reference to the weapon in that boxset or just a general one we haven't seen. If the answer is a spoiler for later on in the set then just ignore me haha

Started on this. Loving it so far. And judging by all the spoiler warnings on here, I am in for an interesting ride. Curious what the big surprise is!

So now I am halfway through. I have to say- well done. I just LOVE this type of story. No wonder Mass Effect 2 is my all-time favorite game... I like the characters, the lack of technical gadgets like time-rings, magic screwdrivers and the TARDIS. This is just a wonderful old fashioned "fellowship on a quest" type of story.
Albeit with changing members. As for the big twist.... hmmm... not sure. There must be more to it. {Spoiler} There is just a bit too much ruthlessness and death in there for it to really match. And for me a few "no guns" lines do not make the character. It would be really uncharacteristic for 8 to have the jelly character crawl away from danger in just 40 seconds and risk her getting killed.
So I keep my suspicion up for another twist.
Anyways, at the halfway point, I think I have an idea where this is going. And I am pretty sure this must have been done on suggestion by McGann, since he keeps talking about wanting to do a story like that for a while now.
{Spoiler} I really hope we still get the body-swab story of him and Ace
{Spoiler}
In any case, this really has to stand up to comparison to "Curse of Davros" which was done magnificently. Terry Molloy and Colin Baker really did get into each others characters perfectly. I just do not really get this vibe from Jacobi so far... and this feels quite different to Doom Coalition where 8 plays the Eleven to infiltrate the lair of the bad guys (and is caught out by being not murderous enough). Now I am really curious about how McGann handles the baddie performance. He has done really well in the past and I really love his evil performance, so I really hope for some juicy bits.
But I do not want to get ahead of myself. I need to hear the other half to see what is really going on. I still think there is more to it.
Let us see if I am right.

I will say having giving it much thought there were two flaws from the story
If The system is in heavy Dalek Territory then why were there no Daleks whatsoever in the story?
I’m surprised that there wasn’t any scenes where The Master wasn’t killing anyone while in you know. Likely that it’s probably due to the BBC’s influence or restrictions but having a scene with the character Killing someone would have been quite a shock

Just finished it. Well, I have to say, while this is not my favorite War Master set (that honour goes to the very first one), it definitely is my favorite 8th Doctor release for this year. Yeah, I know, Palindrome and Davros are very hard to beat and I am afraid that Palindrome had the better performance with Terry Molloy...
but Hearts of Darkness wins because it is just exactly the type of story I love.
They really are on a roll with the Time War releases recently, aren't they?
Hearts of Darkness has a lot going for it. - there are NO Daleks in it! Can you believe it? My ears did a happy dance.
- a long 4 hour epic story
- great characters - spooky atmosphere, just right for Halloween listening, especially episode 3 which reminds me a lot of Brain of Morbius - sound and music were again top notch, really helped in creating said atmosphere - action and a great fellowship on a quest type story - A LOT of twists and turns and definitely something you need to listen to at least twice - some great performances by the leads- I really would love to see these videos of these actors going through the motions in their booths!
As mentioned in the extras- yes, we would indeed listen to the wedding of the Master and the Doctor!
Right, now into Spoiler territory....
{Spoiler} First off, this set pretty much was labelled wrongly... I think we get to see more of the 8th Doctor in this than we get in Time War 4! Have I mentioned that I love and adore body-swab stories? I enjoyed the Switching, but I also really love the 8th Doctor comics with Destrii! I agree with the Illusive Man that yes, it would have been cool if the mind-swapped Master in 8ths body would have killed a person or three in cold blood... but we do get a nice cruel torture scene, so that was quite juicy for myself.
So in conclusion- this was awesome.
I wonder what we will get next time?

Another thing that made me think... it is described here that the Doctor really fears the Master. That people can really hear the fear in his voice.
I am not so sure about that- yes, the Doctor has some healthy distrust and apprehension about the Master, but real fear that can be heard in his voice? That is a first. I do not think 3 was ever afraid of the Master, neither was 4, really, and 5 and 6 were more annoyed and furious about him than anything else.

Without wanting to be spoiled (I skimmed through the thread), how many episodes does the Eighth Doctor actually make a significant appearance? Is it like say; Rage of the Time Lords where he's a main player in two stories, or is it like River Song where he's a supporting character in only one story?

Let us just say he is significant to the whole of the set. It is definitely not a River Song supporting situation, it is a far more intertwined situation.
To say more would spoil this.
Only thing I would add-
If you love both 8 and the War Master, you will love this.
I thought it was brilliant.
