What an interesting mix of Physiological drama meets 80s/90s Action romp.
Well done to Laura Aikman for keeping a grounded performance against heightend Leads obviously having a whale of time while wonderfully sincere scene chewing/stealing.
In summery its an Experience
4.5/5

I'm not going to listen to the whole set until I get off from work, but I went ahead and gave myself a drama tease of the first 18 minutes of Faustian. A few things jumped out at me.
1. Has anyone else noticed how good some of the soundscapes have been recently? They've taken on lives of their own. End of the Beginning had a great one, especially part 3. No exceptions here. The atmosphere drips, and keeps things tense and anticipatory. Loving it!
2. The theme music is genuinely scary, and takes advantage of your knowledge that none of this will end well.
3. It seems apparent (I think I may have mentioned this before) that the creative forces behind the curtain had a problem with knowing how to approach the Deathworm Master at first. I think they were afraid that the old wounds of the movie's perception would open again if they let the Master go big and flamboyant. A reasonable fear. They erred on the side of straight lacing the performance, but that didn't really work. We know from Masterful that the character was being allowed to return to his original characterization. This story, so far, has left no doubt. The approach seems to be let this Master be who he is, just make sure the material he's working with is good. And that really was the issue in 1996, wasn't it? Not the act, but the substance of what we were working with. In other words, any reservations about Eric Roberts are slipping away.
I'll have more thoughts when I get through the rest.

Eric Roberts is the most Dracula-like of all Masters. The sleeked back hair, the long dark silhouette, the deep and sinister/seductive voice; along with the character he was given in the TV Movie, I really thought he was great. Probably coincidentally, his new incarnation seemed a logical step from Ainley's final turn in Survival, where he was under the possession of another dark, cat-like demon. It all seemed to fit really well. And then there is Eric himself - no-one delivers a line like him, no-one could have played the part like him. Like most of the Doctors, his is a unique performance, and if writers can tap into that style, something genuinely special could emerge.
I think they've cracked it. The sliding, vaguely Eastern sounding theme is perfect for him. The build-up is a long one, but it's worth it. Supporting cast all turn in fine performances, but things definitely take on epic proportions when The Dark One finally arrives. When he says "You need me," he means it: you really do.
The Dark One has the stage to himself now. He doesn't need to be sidelined by a posturing group of his other selves, their egos jostling for attention, shouting out their catchphrases to drown him out. The Dark One needs no such gimmickry. He lurks, he broods, he whispers ...
This is just part one, of course, but it's great so far. I did feel the previous big Masterful release was only partially successful, mainly because of the inevitability of too many star performances. Focused on this singular version, this succeeds. Roberts' Master is mentioned in the extras to be the most desperate - and that's probably true, but such is his demeanour, his coolness, his charm, you'd never know it.
A while ago, David Richardson said that if sales were good, there might be more. Might? Surely that's a given isn't it?

Considering that I feel like for most of you this was probably among this years most anticipated releases, it’s really pleasing to see a positive reaction to it. 🙂

I am not a great reviewer, but this gets 5/5 from me! Maybe because when i bought it i was not expecting too-much! Tuns-out to be well above average,a good roller coaster ride throughout, great script, great music, refreshing performances from all the cast, usual excellent soudscape.A 2nd boxset would be welcome, for me this was more enjoyable than Masterful which went off on a tangent, whereas this was straight to the point! So definitely not Goodnight Vienna!

One episode in and so far, so good. It’s certainly different! It’s very much striking me as one bigger story than three individual ones, though, so will reserve judgement until I’ve listened to the full set.

Only one episode in but my expectations have been exceeded, absolutely wonderful. The idea of bringing Eric Roberts' Master back in a retelling of the story of Dr Faustus is perfect given the devilish classical villainy of his portrayal, & its a portrayal that really suits audio. Laura Aikman is great also as the ambitious Dr. Lila Kreeg & I loved how the Master preyed on that character's weakness, that ambition of an underappreciated scientist.

- 4 months prior to release: "I'm not really interested in Master!"
- 2 months prior to release: "Eh, I'll give it a shot."
- 1 month prior to release: "I'm cautiously optimistic about Master!"
- 1 week prior to release: "Im not expecting much, but I'm kinda excited for it."
- Upon release: "Oh god oh god oh god--Master! is gonna be so good I can't wait to listen to it!"

I absolutely loved this release as has been mentioned above Eric has the stage to himself and with the added bonus of Vienna .This was a more satisfying release than Masterful by far ok it had Daleks doesn’t everything lol.Eric’s Master as the head of a conglomerate so him.You could almost see the futuristic shoulder pads (Dynasty/Dallas 😂) I do hope we get a second set and perhaps a little seeking vengeance on Lila and Vienna is it relistenable?Absolutely yes .Well done to the team and the actors . I gave it 5/5 as I listened in the one go which is always a good sign

Yes they have tapped into it...his style...the understated menace....his torture of the Dalek Supreme...could have played differently and his purpose delivered without sounding as mad as he actually is

Prey, & this set continues to entertain. My first time hearing Vienna who was fun & fitted into the world of this story so well. As they mention in the extras this future Earth is Blade Runner meets Escape From New York, a vivid mix of cyperpunk & post apocalypse thanks to the brilliant sound design. It's the perfect playground for this version of the Master.
