Maybe it was mentioned somewhere, but I could have sworn that with the regeneration The Rani was going to pop up more? I haven't listened yet to those, but just a curious thought I had.

I think there have been some rights issues which have prevented her making a re appearance outside of those two stories.

All that’s been said on the matter is rights issues. There’s never been anything to indicate what the cause of the issues was.

The joys of rights... Well in that case, whoever holds the rights should do stuff with them 👍🏼

It does seem strange that Big Finish were able to produce two stories with the Rani.
I believe it was rights issues that prevented them using the character for the years previous...I wonder if these are new rights issues or the same ones as before!?

I wonder if Bill Baggs has any invested stake in it 🤔, unlikely, but maybe through some kind of contract.

Yeah with the Bakers gone, it would be difficult. Who knows what state the estate was in. I think it is pretty clear BF would be using the character if they could.

It's a pity things have gone quiet on the character really. I thought Siobhan Redmond was a very worthy successor to Kate O'Mara's time in the role. Her final scene in The Rani Elite, where she's boasting and shouting to the Doctor that she's already killed him, has to be one of the best character defining moments for a revivified villain on BF audio. When was that...? 2014(!) and potent as ever.

I think it is pretty clear BF would be using the character if they could. Going by the tribute to Pip Baker in DWM and the reprinted interview, the Bakers come across as fairly shrewd operators when it comes the pounds, shillings and pence. I get the impression that Jane Baker in particular didn't let anyone off lightly if there was money due to her.
What that means for the rights now both Bakers have passed away - and I think they had no children - I have no idea, but I'm sure they won't be cheap.

It was clear that they were always tight with their pennies thirty years back, when they were pictured in interviews in distinctly 1970's outfits. They could probably peel an orange in their pockets.

Until someone does use her, I don't think we'll get an answer about the rights. With Pip and Jane gone, and with no kids and no one that they specified in particular, I assume it must go to someone else in the family (if they have living relatives) and then fan outwards, depending on circumstances. Do they get handled as one entity, or carved up and shared (one gets the rights to her likeness, another gets merch rights, maybe another gets the rights for film and TV etc etc)? Bona vacantia for IP, under British law, does also means someone could buy the rights to her, if they were up. Although we must remember Pip didn't die all that long ago, so it is possible said rights are still being sorted out.
If, for the sake of argument, someone did pick them up already, they could be simply holding out for the TV show, rather than taking the smaller pot from the audios, and Chibbs may not be biting. Again, all speculation.

But legalese aside, it's still one of my big shames from the last decade of Who - Redmond was really good and I was really looking forward to another story. The Rani feels like she should've been in at least one or two Time War stories by now (maybe we could've gotten Hurt vs Redmond?) - an amoral scientist who pursues knowledge no matter what? Perfect for series that blur lines. Or maybe pair her with Gomez and see the two Scottish Time Ladies go at it? Maybe they'd have cast a Rani III and done some kind of surprise reveal in a 10DA or one of the 8 sets like Ravenous?

The Rani is a character with loads of potential for three big reasons IMO:
1) Unlike a lot of later-era characters, she has the potential to meet earlier Doctors as their first meeting was back in their first lives, with no indication of how many times they've seen each other since Gallifrey - and nothing says Kate O'Mara was the First Rani, so BF can cast whoever they want (and recast as often as they want).
2) Given her amoral nature, she could very easily be used as an ally to the Doctor, an enemy to the Doctor, a protagonist in her own right, an ally/antagonist in spin-off series (River, UNIT, etc.) - no need to stick her in a single box, repeating what she did on TV again and again.
3) Her story is entirely open-ended. This is another thing that sets her apart from a lot of the other characters BF has access to - there's no ending already written for the Rani's story, so they can do whatever they want with her!
I really do hope that we get more Rani eventually (and Siobhan Redmond's incarnation in particular).
We should really have that Deca reunion that the Doctor talked about - Sylvester McCoy, Siobhan Redmond, Rufus Hound, Geoffrey Beevers, Ray Brooks, Anthony Keetch and a new incarnation of the War Chief!

The question is asked in the Vortex that just came out minutes ago. As suspected, after Pip died there are issues over the rights to the character. As anyone who has had elderly relatives pass, they'll know these things can take a long time to resolve so I wouldn't hold my breath.
Thought it was a bit odd Nick just saying "the sad passing of the rights holders" though rather than "Pip and Jane" - they were well known to fandom, read a bit..colder than he probably meant. We wouldn't say "The actor who played Sarah Jane" rather than "Lis Sladen".

Yes his answers all read as an odd attempt at professional detachment, maybe he was having writers block on Human Frontier 2 or creative pushback from somewhere that day. Regards mark687

Regards mark687 Yeah, I'm not having a go as he did preface it with "sad" but surely he knows BF fans are more likely than not to know their Pip n Jane Baker from their Bob Bakers! I have a signed CD of their The Rani Reaps the Whirlwind BBV audio somewhere, Kate's got more to sink her teeth into in that than on TV.

The Third Doctor would be the perfect candidate for a team-up with the Rani. A Season 10b of sorts with the Rani as a recurring ally who increasingly butts heads with the Doctor until they become enemies. It's perfect! It practically writes itself.
