We've lost two very memorable guest stars in the show this past week.
Louis Mahoney was in two classic era stories in Frontier In Space and Planet Of Fire, both in small parts but it's his "New Who" role I love. His lovely performance as the older Billy, dying in bed in Blink as Sally Sparrow comes to visit him, having just flirted with the younger version of him, is one that never fails to bring a tear to my eye. He's got a real sparkle and gives a little magic to that ep. He also had many, many roles on TV and in film, from Hammer to Fawlty Towers. His biggest lasting contribution will be his work to get BAME people fair representation on screen, something that obviously has been a major issue the past few years but which Louis was fighting for 50 years ago.
Philip Latham, of course, was Borusa in The Five Doctors and as such may be one of the most viewed guest stars since it's very much a gateway story for a lot of newer fans getting into classic Who. He had some big, big roles in UK TV in The Troubleshooters, The Pallisers and The Cedar Tree among many others. On film he played Klove in Hammer's Dracula Prince Of Darkness, a part later played by a certain Pat Troughton.
Two guys who had big careers in their own ways - in Who terms they're notable without being household names but they did us proud and live on. Here's to them.

As an aside, Philip Latham also played a doctor (not The Doctor!) in The Two Faces of Evil, the penultimate episode of the Hammer House of Horror TV series. I mention this because that episode in particular, and Philip's role in it, absolutely terrified me as a youngster.

Hello again.
Two memorable roles from two memorable actors. Louis Mahoney's portrayl of the older Billy Shipton was truly moving. He was also an active campaigner against apartheid and in the actors union Equity.
Philip Latham's power hungry Borusa was a performance I have etched on my brain. I had a tape recording of the Five Doctors which I listened to a lot. So much so that I can quote chunks of it verbatim!

I was surprised when I read that Philip Latham had only recently passed, perhaps as he looked a lot older than his 54 years when he played Borusa way back in 1983. Both very good actors, as davy-g sums up well. Louis Mahoney's cameo in 'Blink' is one of the things that gives the episode its heft. Andy yes, The Two Faces of Evil still maintains it nightmarish qualities. Keep those fingernails trimmed everyone, please.
