So assuming Jodie leaves the role after her 3rd series (like most Doctors do), what does everyone want for the next Doctor? Alternately, what about the Ruth Doctor... what should happen regarding her?

I think either they should have the twist be Ruth is actually 14 or here are my other picks: Keeley Hawes, Jamila Jamaal, or Olivia Coleman as a contrasting glamorous posh defrosting ice queen (hiding compassionate hearts) female Doctor, in contrast to the silly tomboy 13 Rupert Grint as the first ever ginger Doctor! He’s extra quirky and he needs a comeback! Michael Sheen, come on he’d perfect! Plus first Welsh Doctor 😉 Angus Irmrie, having seen him play Merlin in The kid who would be king he’d be perfect! Watch these clips and tell me it does not look like an audition to play the Doctor! youtu.be/-F5LjccYcjYyoutu.be/gZPelUOEyCc

I'd still love to see someone like Toby Stephens with Full Beard like in Black Sails or Damian Lewis

Jo Martin would be great, & there are a couple elements of Who lore which could be used to bring her back - Romana II got to choose her physical form when regenerating & then there's the words of the Curator who, in response to 11 saying "I never forget a face", said "I know you don’t. And in years to come you might find yourself revisiting a few. But just the old favourites, eh?"
But failing that IMHO going back to a male Doctor after one female Doctor would be a mistake, I think we need at least 2 female Doctor's before we go back to a man again if not it would seem like a gimmick, or detractors would say 'look it didn't work so we've got a man again'. & also regardless of gender with the current climate a Black or Asian actor should be chosen. On my list would be Cush Jumbo, Indira Varma, Sophie Okonedo, Gemma Chan or if we are going with a white actress then Sally Hawkins or Imogen Poots. If they do go for a man again then on my list would be David Harewood, Adrian Lester or my top choice Riz Ahmed. I think he'd bring some of that gritty working class edge that Eccleston did.

I'd love to think the next Doctor actor will be chosen because they are the best person for the job, regardless of gender or race.

Fair enough 🤷🏻♀️I would like more diverse Doctors too🤔🙂I just thought Angus Irmrie’s acting was very doctory so I thought I would at least mention him🤔😉

I'd still love to see someone like Toby Stephens with Full Beard like in Black Sails or Damian Lewis haven’t heard of them what are they like?🤔🙂 Toby Stephens was Captain Flint in Black Sails, where he did tortured and intense/barely-restrained rage quite well. He's currently playing John Robinson in the Netflix reboot of Lost in Space, where he very obviously loves his children but is struggling with how to be a good father. He's also been voicing James Bond in a series of radio plays for the last few years, and while I haven't heard any of them, I expect that he does suave and 'action hero' quite well too. Damian Lewis is probably most widely recognized for his roles as Nicholas Brody in Homeland, or before that, as Lt/Capt/Maj Winters in Band of Brothers.

It ought to be somebody who brings an entirely new take to the character. Somebody who *isn't* Doctorish. What about Clive Mantle? OK, he played a doctor in Casualty, but I don't think anybody would see him as The Doctor.
The actor I've always wanted in the role is Neil Pearson; unfortunately, this doesn't sit well wth my theory that nobody should be cast that fans or the press have speculated about.

Should've been Jo Martin before Timeless Child made it moot
Idris Elba
Sean Bean
Damian Lewis
Charlie Hunman
Alexzander Siddig
Judy Dench
Helen Mirren

It's interesting to me that the least 'Doctorish' was Chris Eccleston. A Northern suede-head in leather jacket and DMs isn't how anyone expected Doctor Who to come back on air all those years ago, I imagine. And yet after he left, the actors have all been very 'Doctor-y'.
Regarding gender, it 'shouldn't' matter, but beyond fan circles, has Jodie been seen as a success? I truly don't know. And would that perceived success - or perceived un-success - have any bearing on who would play the role in future?
As I said, I would just like the next Doctor to be played by the person best suited to the role, beyond any other consideration.

I'd love to think the next Doctor actor will be chosen because they are the best person for the job, regardless of gender or race. I mean I agree, but too often that phrase is thrown around to, although not in your case, imply someone who isn't a white guy got the job because of some ulterior motive.
I'm glad plenty of people here don't work in the industry, because sadly, I've heard plenty of stories of how non-white professionals are given some of the weirdest reasons why it's not a level playing field. One of the all-time 'greats' was a black screenwriter who asked the (white) showrunner why she was the only non-white male person in the room, despite him claiming he supported 'diversity'. He said, 'well, it's diversity of thought'.

Well, I personally would not mind a season or two with Jo Martin. I thought she was absolutely amazing and I admit I actually liked her better than Jodie in that episode. I would take her in a heartbeat. And I definitely need that costume.

I mean, I'm still hoping that Jo Martin is a future Doctor or at least not pre-Hartnell because of the police box (and maybe the name Doctor) - also The Timeless Children didn't give much of an answer on that front, just had Martin shrug about it in a dream sequence.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge would never do it, but I love to imagine. Same with Richard Ayoade - I think they're both too writer-director-y these days to sign up for an acting job that kills any hope of doing anything else for the duration.
Who else could I imagine as the Doctor? Riz Ahmed, Aiden Gillen, Colin Macfarlane, Lindsay Duncan, Ewen Bremner, Warwick Davis and probably a whole bunch of other people I'm forgetting about right now.

Yes very true. Some people do assume that someone who isn't a white man only got a job due to some diversity quota. A bit off topic I guess. Although if after Capaldi we'd had another skinny white man I would have given up on the show, I almost did during the Capaldi era. But that again is a bit off topic so another one on my wishlist, Tilda Swinton!

They are all brilliant in their way! It doesn’t really matter what the person who plays the Doctor looks like at the end of the day so as long as they embody the true spirit of true kindness, curiosity, and unconventionality deep down in their hearts💙💙😊 I would also be intrigued if they cast a total unknown actor or actress as 14. Someone who had done tv before but perhaps been more in the background 🤔😊

Jo Martin was brillant so would love for her to be 14. But don't think that's going to happen.
