So I was thinking recently about how there are certain episodes of Doctor Who that I avoid not because they are bad but because they make me too emotional.
For me the prime examples are Hell Bent and Twice upon a Time. Hell Bent while far from perfect is the end to 12 and Clara’s tragic, complex romantic relationship. I just feel so close to those two’s journey together it’s almost painful to watch them go there separate ways. Twice Upon a Time is a flawed but lovely and bittersweet coda to the end of Capaldi’s era, but I have difficulty even rewatching it anticipating my favorite Doctor’s regeneration scene. Even though I know he’s not really dead and I like 13, 12’s regeneration just feels far too much like a real death to me😢 I think it has to do with 12 feeling like a real person who lived and grew so his regeneration felt more real.
Do you guys have any Doctor Who episodes or stories that you either don’t or have difficulty rewatching/relistening/rereading not because they are bad episodes but because they make you too emotional?

Well, you know my stance on the romance bit...  I know what you are asking... I have exactly that issue that some stories I have trouble listening to because they hit so hart I have a bad time processing them. War Master- Sky Man is a very good example. It is absolutely terrific. But I have not come back to it because I can still remember it vividly and it felt like a fist of ice clutching my stomach. I have a similar issue with "Lies in Ruins" which I only have listened to once and have not dared to go back (the first time listening upset me so much I could not sleep that night). Also "Jubilee" I find very tough. So far I had not had that issue so much with the TV series. There are emotional stories and stories that make me tear up, but not to the extend these BF stories do. |

I can't really think of anything like that in Doctor Who. I do have my limits, and I'm not made of stone, but yeah.
Even at its darkest, the nature of the show as a family programme means it never goes so far out into difficult territory that it's too much for me. Just being bittersweet isn't enough to phase me. It's got to be something really raw and disturbing. There's nothing much in the Whoniverse that makes me dread it the way I do, say, "Employee of the Month" from The Sopranos.
Children of Earth is probably the closest, but even though it's pitch-black it's also the best thing Torchwood ever did, so I certainly wouldn't avoid seeing it again.

As does Legacy of Time (Lies in Ruins is the first story). If you feel up to it. Warning- this is nothing you want to listen to when already upset or depressed.
I think it is high praise for the quality of writing and also the quality of acting that BF has at hand, that there are stories of fictional alien heroes/ villains, set at ridiculous alien planets, playing out in ridiculous situations, that these indeed upset me so much emotionally that I cannot sleep. The performances are really flawless.

If we're talking about the TV series, then I love how Heaven Sent deals with grief. Even though it was completely undone by Hell Bent just a week after its broadcast.
If we're talking about Big Finish, the endings of Arrangements for War and Absent Friends are some of the most beautiful Doctor Who material out there. I still cannot listen to Six and Liv having a breakdown without shedding a tear.

The War Games. Green Death. When Sixie believes Peri has been killed. I was not the biggest fan of Adric, but he did go out with a bang. The Doctor Falls is absolutely amazing. All of these were so much more meaningful than Rose. Never been into Rose. Even Face the Raven was better handled and I wish that had been Clara‘s send off. For me the episode which shall not be named never happened. |

Hmmm...regenerations? One's, Three's, Four's, Five's, Eight's and Nine's. Companions? Ian and Barbara, Susan (mainly because of THAT speech), Jo Grant (solely because of Pertwee's performance), Sarah Jane's various departures (Hand Of Fear, School Reunion and her final scene in the last episode of the Sarah Jane Adventures), The Brigadier's last onscreen appearance (Revenge of the Bane or whatever it was called), Nyssa (I'm sure Billy can understand that one..😉), Peri, Astrid (RTD threw Kylie to a fiery demise in the Spaceship Titanic, the *******!!), Donna (an annoying character in The Runaway Bride, a wonderful character by Journey's End) and Wilf (without a doubt the greatest companion the Doctor never had travelling in the TARDIS. That scene at Donna's Wedding...🥺). |

The selections I have in mind might seem a little obscure, but they get me every time.
The end of Logopolis. The Fourth Doctor, who for seven years gallivanted around the universe with his jelly babies and 'toothy grin', is broken and dying. That's heart-breaking enough, but when he has just seen images and flashbacks of his old friends and enemies saying goodbye, I have to clear my throat.
That moment in Aliens of London when The Doctor inadvertently takes Rose home one year after she left. All the silliness and the slapstick that followed. And then Jackie comes into Rose's room with a cup of tea and sees her packing her bags. "Please don't leave," she says in a tiny voice. Suddenly, we're brought slap down to earth with a lovable, rather lonely mother pleading - only briefly - with her daughter not to leave her. Heart-breaking.
School Reunion from the following series. You know what I mean. At the end, the Doctor hugs 'his Sarah Jane', then leaves her with a gleaming K-9. That final scene with Sarah and her robot dog walking down a sunny street. All of it reduces me to liquid, and it did so even before Elizabeth's passing.
'You'll have to excuse me, I have something in my eye.'

The first time I watched Listen, I lost it at the reveal that it was the same barn as Day of the Doctor, complete with the footage of John Hurt.
And that Last Christmas moment where Old Clara and Twelve echo the moment from Time of the Doctor between Eleven and Clara - but mostly the first time, when I didn't know the final twist of the episode.
Oh, also the ending of Journey's End where the Doctor just putters around the console alone.
EDIT: Ah, remembered another one - also from 2014 (an emotional year I guess!) - When Danny turns down the Moffat Resurrection he's entitled to and sends the kid back.

I always had very mixed feelings about Danny myself. He was good in playing the role of a recovering veteran turned teacher and had some genuinely touching emotional scenes but I don’t like him with Clara. Danny and Clara never had the same spark together that 12 and Clara had. I think that’s kind of the point that he’s the safer(human) option for Clara. Oddly I think Danny and 12 had better chemistry than Danny did with Clara. Danny was decent in Last Christmas though for what he did, in fact it’s the only time I liked (even then that’s a strong word) Danny and Clara as a couple. To be honest I think I would prefer Danny if he was just another teacher at Cole Hill School that happened to be a companion with Clara and the Doctor, more of just a close strictly platonic friend to Clara than a boyfriend. Even though I liked Danny otherwise, I feel bad because I want to like him more, but I kind of saw him as an annoying barrier keeping 12 and Clara from getting closer to each other. I just wanted Danny and Clara to break up every single time they had a scene together. In other words, I think Danny is good character, I just would would have liked him better if he wasn’t Clara’s boyfriend. Edit: I did like that Danny brought the child back to life instead of himself, that a nice bittersweet moment 😢 |
