One down, two to go. Enjoying it immensely. The pictures in my head are way better than the TV series, but with that as a sort of reference base. (One minor gripe - having the actors doing accents similar to the originals means I don't get to swoon over Mark Bonnar's Scottish brogue. Shame.) Yes I agree I don’t think it would have done any harm keeping his accent but I don’t mind his American one. Yes the imagination can work wonders with these ones given what the TV show did attempt...very enjoyable set of tales

First episode in, and given some of the hints dropped (plus a quick shot in the trailer video) I think Simmons may have had good reason to initially deal with aliens as he did...

Having heard all three, it's pretty good. Not as much "better than the original" as Breakaway, but still worth getting and I'm waiting for more. I think my nitpicks come down to the episodes sticking a bit closer to the spirit of the original 1999 than I really wanted, I was hoping for a more aggressive reimagining that was a bit "harder".
Shouty Helena has grown on me, I'm fine with her now. I particularly like the way she takes over given the slightest opportunity.
After Breakaway set up some less silly science babble for how the Moon ends up travelling the stars, it's offhandedly all explained in Siren Call and we're back to the television standard of not even trying, zipping between the stars between episodes with no acknowledgment of the times/distances/speeds involved. While Space 1999 was always silly and squishy with the science, it annoys me when it is unnecessarily so.
The Siren Call - Tidying up the Meta story hook was a good idea, but it left me feeling like it was all tied up too quickly. The Moon is launched to the stars, and this is why? Nice to see Simmons given a little bit more than just being pompous and cowardly (and his initially aggressive response may have been fully justified given what he knows).
Death's Other Dominion - I can't really remember the original, something about an ice world and guest starring BRIAN BLESSED. We get a little bit philosophical (who wants to live forever?), some silly science and some background world building oddities that irrationally irritate me (Why have a flight to Neptune in 1982? Wouldn't later be more credible? And we're saying there were Eagles flying in the early 80s?) But I still had fun listening to it.
Goldilocks - A possible world to settle, with friendlyish natives but a wildlife problem. It didn't seem an impossibly bad planet to me, but only two episodes in the Alphans may not be desperate enough to pull the trigger on Exodus to an imperfect world.
Bonus points for the nice video trailer that's online.

Weeeellll... this is sort of alternate reality stuff, after all.
After the moon landings of 1969, it seemed reasonable to have an established base there well before 1999, which would have served as a launch pad for solar exploration. So why not Neptune in 1982? Moonbase could have got build well before 1979 if anyone had been truly bothered to spend money on it instead of armaments to point at each other across the globe. And Eagles would have been flying early on aiding with construction, I feel.
I don't know the T&C of BF's licence with GA for this series, but I'd suspect that they're expected to stay pretty close to the originals as much as possible. Okay, we've got a 2 woman formal relationship already established and I bet there's more like that to come, but otherwise - buckle in and enjoy the ride.

Well, yes, it’s certainly possible and we don’t have a carefully developed comprehensive alternative history here, the background is just throwaway lines. But if I was writing it I wouldn’t have the Eagles as an aged design nearly 20 years old, and to reach Neptune in reasonable time I’d be using something like the Queller drive, which is still not entirely sorted in 1999 (and has weird wormhole generating failure modes that set up Death’s Other Dominion) And... {Spoiler} I think we already know what the early 1980s in space looks like. t’s very strongly implied that this version of Space 1999 follows on from UFO, with Alpha’s classified military beginnings, the secret alien contact Simmons and Koenig know about and hints in the Siren Call episode including the sound effect of the alien saucer

Found the three themes to be a little similar, but very enjoyable.

If I was going for another tv episode to transfer I’d want the one with the big monster within the derelict spacecrafts that sucks the life oot of ye..... make it so (sorry wrong show 🤪😉) That would be a BIG shoe to fill, you're picking the best episode of the entire TV run of Space: 1999. If it does eventually happen, I hope that the reimaging team will deploy their A-game for the soundscape as was evident in the original.

Oh, Dr. Helena Russell. Again here we go again. !st time I complained the portrayal of this iconic character was too loud and vulgar. now with this new release the character is not embodying the way Barbara Bain spoke or acted. This character calling a fellow Alphan a "sister"

I thought this was an enjoyable box set. Nice to see the follow up to Meta in the first story. Excellent move that. All three stories were a good standard, the actors were great and the sound design rather nice too.
Having listened to this box set though, and looking ahead a bit, I hope they shake up the next box set slightly and have a two parter and a one parter, or even a three parter. Otherwise getting the “planet of the week” adventure three times in a row could start to get a bit wearing.
Don’t get me wrong, this is good stuff and I am there for the next box set when it’s out, just looking ahead a bit.

Re-listened to Goldilocks and, without giving the story away, there’s quite a nice reason they decide whether to stay on the Goldilocks planet or not at the end. I’ll leave you to guess what their decision is of course! It’s yet another good story. The different characters play out nicely. The landing party split up so we get two threads to follow. This brings nice developments in each as the story progresses. The play off between the various leads is always a joy to listen too as well. All in all, these are so evocative of the tv series, what’s not to like? Hopefully we won’t have to wait to long till the next volume!

Thoroughly enjoying these new versions of the classic TV shows. They feel a lot more taut and dynamic in the telling to me. (Even if the original Earthbound has been expanded somewhat - much to its benefit.)

I am torn on this series.
Breakaway was an absolutely fantastic releases.
Volume 1 was an absolutely abysmal release and if i hadn't pre-ordered I'd have given up right there and then.
Volume 2 was a noticeable step up in quality to the point that i haven't given up on the series completely.
Does anyone know if there is a volume 3 planned.

For me, the Space 1999 series Big Finish is making isn't quite the series I wanted them to. I was hoping for a more serious reimagining, Battlestar Galactica style, and Breakaway hinted that maybe I was going to get it. But the follow-on boxed sets seem to have stuck more to the style of the original series. I don't think it's fair of me to complain that Big Finish is selling apples when I wanted oranges.
Having said that, I preferred the first volume. The Earthbound pair felt a bit over the top to me, and while in the extras it was emphasised that Simmons isn't Dr Smith from Lost in Space, he is Dr Smith from Lost in Space.
