I'm sure they could fit a new companion in somewhere, Charlie Higson's short story The Beast of Babylon is set between the defeat of the Nestene Consciousness at the end of Rose when he briefly leaves & returns after the events of that story. That story actually directly plugs the gap and doesn’t leave any space for more stories. That’s not to say that BF couldn’t just ignore the continuity of that story. And actually, I hope they do. A short arc with Eccleston meeting a new companion before parting ways with them and deciding to return to Rose would be nice. True, I was just using that as an example of how space can be found. To be honest I don't really care about continuity when it comes to BF & how the stories fit into the timeframe of the classic adventures. I have no idea where the stories of the 4th, 5th or 6th fit with established continuity!

The sets aren’t necessarily going to flow into each other. The might be more like The Tenth Doctor Adventures rather than, say, The War Doctor. We could get a set with Rose, a set of him solo, etc. Big Finish have been keen to utilise that gap pre-Rose so far; I wouldn’t be surprised to see them prop that up with a bona fide Chris Eccleston adventure. And an encounter with River has got to happen, surely? A story if not a set. I'd prefer to get standalones, honestly. It gives more scope for different stories, times and characters. After a while though if either Chris or David do want to do more BF then an arc would be nice, so it doesn't feel like we're constantly getting the middle-season eps. Though you can easily get a dozen adventures of just one-offs without the novelty slightly wearing off. I hope some of the writers have ideas specific to Chris' Doctor and really explore the character. Couldn’t agree more and I hope it’s the route they go down. Even though it’s the same number of stories, and a wider scope, it doesn’t feel like you exploit that tight era he has on screen if you go down the route of standalone adventures. They feel as though they’re little extras that are, say, pre-Rose or between The Doctor Dances & Boom Town or whatever, rather than creating another era on the side.

Of course, it'd have been more of a surprise if his name hadn't popped up as a contributor on BF's website a few months back... I guess the real test on how much he's mellowed will be if he records one with Barrowman.

Well, I'll be! There were whispers and rumours when The Ninth Doctor got his own 'section' on the BF website, but I genuinely didn't think Chris would ever be back. I'll be honest - I've always thought 'well, I respect your decision not to return, but I won't lose any sleep over it.' Now he's confirmed he's coming back 'to a part he loved playing', I am both excited and very happy about the news. Good on him! And good on Big Finish too! I'll be interested in the adventures they send him on but let's face it, I'll be pre-ordering these.

A short arc with Eccleston meeting a new companion before parting ways with them and deciding to return to Rose would be nice. I don't think this is as big a deal as it used to be. Early BF covers even had "This story takes place between ____ and _____" so you knew where it fit in around the TV show. I think being less deferential to another medium. Just coming up with something as simple as "Rose is relaxing in a resort, I got bored so thought I'd give the TARDIS a spin. By the time she knows I'm gone I'll be back already" - then ignore Rose. Since not every TV ep rolled into the next, there is wiggle room there. Not too much obviously - The Doctor can't become great friends with Mickey or Jackie, say, since we know what the relationship was like after that. Ditto monsters he's clearly never met before this point on TV. All that stuff. But the broad strokes of finding a gap for a trip away from Rose is easily done.

You realize that BF could expand 9's timeline by acting as if when Rose said no, he left and didn't actually come back until a few hundred years later. Rose was his final companion, not his only one. He even remembered to wear the same shirt. A bit of stretch, but you could make it work.
Oh, I'm sorry did I give you the impression that was I capable of keeping it together? What I meant to say was AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

He just didn't enjoy working with Barrowman, I can imagine Barrowman being quite annoying to work with.

Surely they going to tell tales from pre tv era, new companions, no companions, no restrictions I would love to see the Ninth Doctor and new recurring characters who might travel once or twice in the TARDIS - or call the TARDIS for help like the Brig/UNIT - but who aren't technically companions. An arc would be amazing - that's something we haven't seen in the New Series Doctor stories so far.

HOLY SH -!! I haven't had the greatest day at work today, but this has certainly helped perk me up a bit! As others have said, it's a miracle that we're getting four, let alone one! The first comes out the month after my birthday. I think I know what I'll be asking for...

He just didn't enjoy working with Barrowman, I can imagine Barrowman being quite annoying to work with. Eccleston's book goes into more about his own mental health at the time. It was when his anorexia was at it's worst and he was having some massively dark times. Add to that a working environment that he felt encouraged bullying from the top, and Barrowman thinking exposing himself was "banter" (something the Torchwood guys have said he did on their set too) and you can see why he was so reluctant to return to the show for so long, bringing him back into that mindset. Barrowman was probably the least of his issues with the set but it's one Chris has cited as being unprofessional and making crew who weren't the stars with clout to complain very uncomfortable. His book seems to have helped him exorcise a lot of demons. He sought help for his (lack of) weight issues and mental health. Seeing on the convention circuit how happy his work made people also seems to have reinforced a fresh start with the show. He now talks about it in interviews rather than a few words and moving on.

Perhaps they'll at least record separately like Tom & Lalla. FOUR FLIPPING VOLUMES? I figured if Eccleston returned it would be one set at a time like Tennant. Holy moly. Probably want to get a lot in in case he changes his mind again!

Always interesting to listen to Eve Myles talking about sitting in make up, turning her head, then getting smacked by Barrowman's dong in the face 😱 lol

Just came home from my swim. Switched on internet.
Nearly had eyes popping from my sockets.
Checked date. Yeah, August, not April.
I did NOT expect this.
But shows that the rumours a few months back and the strange placeholder on the website were indeed a clue.
Wow. Lost for words now.
