Thin Time by Dan Abnett
Hallowe’en, 1892. Celebrated novelist Charles Crookshap claims to have been receiving time communiqués, promising secrets that could change the world forever. But when the TARDIS interrupts the household’s evening, the Doctor realises he isn’t the only alien interloper in London.
Madquake by Guy Adams
Abandoned on the planet Callanna, Nyssa, Tegan and Marc take advantage of its therapeutic atmosphere to come to terms with recent events; but others seek to take advantage too. The Slitheen are on their way – and they’re ready to sell this world to the highest bidder!
Further to the recent announcement regarding the relaunch of Doctor Who audio drama ranges at Big Finish, listeners keen to complete their collection of Doctor Who: The Monthly Adventures should read the following:
a 3-release CD / download subscription is now available, starting from #271, #272 or #273, which should enable the majority of subscribers to extend their subscription to the end of the range. Three-release subscriptions are priced at £32.50 for collector’s edition CDs and £27.50 for downloads.
any existing subscribers who find themselves unable to purchase #274 or #275 via a combination of the 12/6/3-release options should contact sales@bigfinish.com, who will be able to process their orders offline.

Just finished Thin Time... {Spoiler} Oh my God, it was him! I knew I recognised Jacob Dudman's voice and mannerisms. I knew it! THE ELEVENTH DOCTOR!! (Loved how he was referred to as "the Other Doctor" in the credits, as well.)

Really enjoyed this pair of stories. It felt like it carried on from the previous trilogy in a way that Time Apart didn't.
Thin Time was atmospheric, some nice character stuff and almost claustrophobic, though that might be me imagining it as an 80's story! I loved the Doctor and Mrs Polly's interaction and how she almost challenged him over the events of Warzone / Conversion. And I did enjoy those closing minutes; I agree that it's going to be divisive, three main range releases on the trot to come under that banner, but I thought it was worthwhile and had meaning. I did smile at the idea of the Doctor sporting a question mark tie, as that's what he'd need to get into The Ritz!
Madquake was fun, with some great character stuff in the first half. I liked that Nyssa & Tegan clashed over what the Doctor did and what happened to Marc will stick with him and may alter his relationship with the Doctor. It's a shame that the remaining story of this trilogy is delayed until next year, as I'm looking forward to seeing how this TARDIS team move on. I enjoyed the Slitheen's appearance and I am quite fond of them; they're one of those monsters where their first appearance represents them when there's more to them than that.

I had a couple of minor issues I guess, though nothing that dampened my enjoyment to speak of. I seemed to have trouble visualizing the Slitheen for some reason (probably just me), but it was wonderful to hear them in a story with The Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan. Could have been something out of Classic Doctors, New Monsters but we probably wouldn't have gotten regular companions I presume, so this was very special {spoiler}Personally I'd rather the end of Thin Time had waited for Matt - with all the suggestions that Chris Eccleston might be in Out of Time, Matt is obviously going to be in it too, right? ;-) - but it was an amazing scene and I'm really glad it happened
I still think poor Marc is doomed, just doomed very slowly. :-)

Interesting.
I was quite intersted in this one after the Podcast fifteen-minute drama tease actually ended on a good cliffhanger (rather than in any old place, or indeed halfway through a sentence, as has happened before) but this just makes it more interesting.
{Spoiler} But I reckon these means there is NO chance of Matt Smith turning up any time soon, and it's a lot more likely that Jake Dudman may be in OOT2 and/or 3.

There's a big difference between an unannounced five-minute cameo and headlining a big, flagship release.

Downloading now, might start on it tonight. After all, there is a story by Dan Abnett who is one of my favorite writers....

About the end of Thin Time: Dudman does a good job - I got spoiled about the cameo by looking at this thread but didn't think it would be such a long cameo or that it would be a conversation between the two Doctors! I also wondered why it had to be Number Eleven and not one of the others where the actor is actually available - but yes, for the story, it had to be Number Eleven. The 1892 connection. Very clever.
I'm sure some people will hate it. But I can but shrug. I'd still rather Dudman be a narrator when he shows up as the main Doctor. But I do think this is a nod to the fact that he might not be...

Please, Big Finish, PLEASE stop quietly slipping the recasts into everything.

I'll admit I was not that fond of Time Apart. It was enjoyable enough but it avoided the consequences of Conversion a bit too much for my liking. Thin Time on the other hand was quite good in my opinion. I like how Five has looked damaged ever since Marc first appeared in Tartarus, he's probably the classic Doctor who needs that kind of development the most in my opinion. That ending was also very fitting. Maybe a bit gratuitous but I think it helped. {Spoiler} As someone said, it HAD to be Eleven. Not just because of the time period, but also because of the similarities between Five and Eleven who don't want to hurt their companions any more, but not to the point of being self destructive like Ten was.

Thinking a little more about The Cameo: I realize the way the Eleventh Doctor is presented, you could listen to this without even knowing who the Eleventh Doctor is, and still connect with his story! You would come to it like Five sees him - as a future Doctor from some distant, possible time, not unlike Muldwych in Birthright or the Curator in The Day of the Doctor. And if you're not keen on the recasts, you could always pretend he's a different future unknown incarnation altogether! Personally, though, the more I think about it, I loved the cameo. It's the type of thing that shouldn't be done all over the place, but every once in a while, it's very satisfying.

Thin Time is an amazing creepy story, full of atmosphere and claustrophobia. Lights off, headphones on... and enjoy the ride. Wonderfully written and performed. There is a reason Abnett is one of my favorite writers, he just "gets" characters and character work. Even in the most ludicrous settings.
I wish he would write more for BF and I really wish he would write something for the Time War. He is THE writer for believable military science fiction (at least in my opinion).
However, I agree, the ending might be a bit controversial... {Spoiler}
Personally, I have no issue because I personally really like like the performance of Dudman as Eleven. I think it is uncanny. And this was an amazing understated performance. I actually really thought, for a fraction of a second, it was indeed Matt. Because, well, Eccleston has happened.... and what a completely out of no-where surprise that has been.
Madquake is a nice character piece, but the Slitheen are completely superfluous, and they could as well have been substituted with Androgums and it would have made more sense. On the other hand, we get some nice insight into the thoughts of the companions on how the Doctor has treated them. And I really would like to point out how amazing the sound design and especially the music was in this. It was just perfect in setting the mood. The soft soothing notes, changing into something more sinister, and then rising to the action....

Thin Time another solo 5 adventure and another monster that feels Lovecraftian in design. Also a story that kind of feels a bit like The Chimes of Midnight and with a resolution that has more than a bit of War of the Worlds in it. It’s one of those stories where the Doctor wins by being lucky instead of any plan or solution he comes up. In spite of all that I sill rather enjoyed it. The ingredients may all be familiar but Dan Abnett does a nice job of mixing things up so they feel fresh in the moment. About “that” ending, I loved the writing but feel it is let down by the actor not named Peter Davison.

Thin Time was a fun if slight tale. Very Atmospheric. {Spoiler} As for that ending. All seemed rather pointless to me. Jake Dudman is ok I guess as 11 not that convincing for me, but I don't really like recasts when the actor is still alive. I'd rather wait until/if they become available. But does this hint at the next pairing for Out of Time? Or was it just a pointless gimmicky coda? If Doctors meet it has to mean something!
