This is what I always find confusing. The desire for some shorter stories not tied to a big arc... whilst getting annoyed that the boxsets have several stories that don’t relate to the main arc. I don't see it as inconsistent to wish for having non-arc stories in one range (or in sets like Six and Peri), and to have box sets focused on arcs to be filled with arc-only episodes.
I'm not as annoyed by it as he, but I can understand it. Imagine LOTR was in four volumes, and the third was all about Gandalf's adventures in South Harad, but nothing related to the rest of it other than Gandalf's presence. A reader might be left wondering "I like this, but why am I reading about it here?"
It can be jarring like that sometimes. It works best when the standalone comes first, ie, Absent Friends. It was an outstanding start to the set despite not having anything to do with it (that I recall), and then the next three stories were related to the arc.
I was more meaning about the same volumes rather than across different ranges. I suspect it’s a question of expectation. The point with LotR only makes sense if you’re going in expecting a single narrative. (I mean, there’s a degree to which you’ve summed up how I feel about LotR regardless with that example, tbh!). If LotR was an episodic TV series that wouldn’t seem so out of place.

My fave McGann era was with Lucie Miller. It is the BF range that I have re-listened so many times. And the way that series ended!

Yes. Half the stories in these box sets don't relate to the main arc. Very annoying This is what I always find confusing. Well I am just about to restart Stranded...something didn’t click with me first time around ,despite the fact it was delivering what I had actually been asking for I have a holiday for a wee break and will go and give it another shot and see how I feel.We are human ,we actually don’t know what we want most of the times 🤪

I think with Stranded I was expecting something more akin to the new adventures of Lucie Miller although I know there was a connection between the first and last stories.

However, even the first set had it's moments and the banter between 8 and Liv is great "Fancy regenerating into someone clever next time?"

Am still kind of lukewarm over Stranded to be honest but I expect that after the BUZZ and expectation and excitement that Ravenous built into me it was like cliffhanger ,waiting a year stuff for me. But McGann with Lucie and McGann with Charley and McGann with Charley and C’rizz and now with Bliss(yes am warming actually it was watching an interview with her and her enthusiasm that brought her to life))all of them give a different facet. But when it comes down to overall audio banter between the characters am going to have to go with the Ravenous sets and I listen to them a lot randomly now when I get chance.

Stranded is just different. It was done very much on purpose to give the biggest possible contrast to the non-stop universe threatening event that was Ravenous. It is also unusual in that it is new territory for the writers. I agree it is not perfect and it always would have had a hard time reaching the heights of Day of the Master.
But I appreciate it for what it is. It is a good start, and I am curious where they are going with it.

And with Time Lord Victorious and the on going Time War for Eighth Doctor fans, Stranded will continue to offer something different. Unless Big Finish decide to introduce Daleks to modern day London! It also means that with so many other Eighth Doctor stories coming up I can happily ignore Stranded.
