This is just for fun but I was just thinking about how amazing and sometimes underrated Labyrinth is! It’s definitely an either love it or hate it movie! I think it’s one of the greatest fantasy and coming of age movies ever made! David Bowie is amazing! Sarah is underrated! The effects and puppets are magical! So to all my fellow Labyrinth lovers on this forum this thread is where we can gush about what and how much we adore this movie! Post any interesting related trivia videos, fan art, head cannons, etc Also is anyone else obsessed with the masked ball scene? I adore every aspect of that scene! It on my bucket list to go to a real masked ball as well!😊 youtu.be/4nBjvElCzAwAlso if you have come across this thread and you have no idea what Labyrinth is, here’s a trailer for the uninitiated: youtu.be/O2yd4em1I6M

It was my younger sister's fascination with Labyrinth that drew me in. Every Christmas she'd watch it and it became a kind of ritual. At the time, David Bowie's musical status was in question - from the highs of Scary Monsters a few years earlier, he'd drifted into this hugely commercial stadium rock persona that saw the money come rolling in, but the innovation and critical acclaim was on the wane - for a while. His involvement in Labyrinth raised a few eyebrows, I remember, from 'respectable' music journos - but Bowie didn't care, and why should he? With this, he won a legion of young fans who knew nothing of Space Oddity and Ziggy Stardust, and bless him for it.

Labyrinth is a film I greatly enjoy. A lot of imagination, David Bowie at his finest and I’ve always been a great admirer of puppetry in any medium.
It’s the closest thing I think we have to someone filming a DND campaign. Random encounters and all.
The Worm is still the best character though. Very much my spirit animal.

I've only owned the movie on VHS so the behind the scenes stuff is all but unknown to me. That's going to be a fun watch later. Also I had a giggle when I saw this thread posted after our little exchange on the guilty pleasures thread.

Theory time!😀 This is probably going to sound really weird but, does anyone else feel like in addition to Jareth, Hogel also had a slight tiny crush on Sarah? Because in my last few rewatch there seemed to be some very odd almost love triangle going on between the three of them? Also I noticed when Jareth said to Hogel that if Sarah ever kisses him that he’ll turn him into a prince (before Jareth added of the swamp of Eternal Stench), he almost seemed excited like he wanted Jareth to turn him human or at least less goblin-like for Sarah. I could be reading to far into things, but I can’t help but think it might have been a missed opportunity if Hogel did temporarily get turned human (Sarah’s age) when Sarah kissed him. For the record I prefer Sarah with Jareth but it could have been interesting especially if we had a human Hogel at the masked ball also vying for the affections of Sarah. I am probably crazy for thinking this but has anyone else thought this?

The baby in Labyrinth is the son of Brian Froud, the concept artist for the film & Dark Crystal. He worked with his dad & mum on the Dark Crystal tv show.

I saw it when it came out a long time ago - me and a fellow 'Monty Python' fan were up for anything by Terry Jones of that illustrious clan!
It was fun, though as it turns out, much of his original work didn't survive the various rewrites but there are still some unmistakable moments like the fire creatures who throw heads around (but only their own head, obviously!), Hoggle spraying the nasty little fairies, and the Bog of Eternal Stench just has to be a Jones idea.

On the Subject of Sarah A lot of people criticize the character of Sarah and Jennifer Connolly’s performance for being too over the top, bratty, weird, and for it being unrealistic that someone who looks like her to be stuck at home babysitting. I think her character and portrayal makes total sense. She is a socially awkward geeky sometimes mellow dramatic daydreaming teenage girl, something that is very familiar to me when I was a teen and still now. Also I get the sense that despite not wanting to babysit, Sarah is an introvert and rather daydream and make up stories in her head than go to wild parties and things. The masked ball scene illustrates this while she is fascinated by the glamour of it all she is also completely overwhelmed and out of her comfort zone. She is also meant to evoke Dorthy and Alice which I think is reflected in her somewhat dreamlike performance. Plus her whole journey is a metaphor for coming of age and trying to balance childhood and adulthood, so of course she’s not going to be some perfect Mary Sue, and to be honest I am glad her character is the way she is because Sarah is very relatable.

I agree, especially on the Dororthy and Alice parallels. And also she's just a weirdo. Some kids are, and that's okay. I was a weirdo when I was that age, and often dramatic and off putting. Come to think of it, I'm probably still a weirdo now. Jennifer Connelly is a bit spacey and spooky, but I like that about her. Dark City is another film where she just suits the mood so well. At any rate, while it's not a naturalistic performance, it's I think fitting with the fairy tale story. Would most annoyed big sisters loudly wish their brother was kidnapped by goblins? No. But a fairy tale princess might.
