🚨🚨 SERIOUS SERIES 13 SPOILERS 🚨🚨
The Dark Times are becoming a big deal, so I thought a timeline of that era may be of use to keep track of this era as it develops. I will include spoilers for recent Flux and TLV content. So read at your own discretion.
Events that are only referenced, but not depicted, are square-bracketed.
So the early days of the Whoniverse go something like this-
The Time of Chaos:
Time Lord Victorious: The Dawn of the Kotturuh: The Kotturuh begin imposing natural lifespans, starting on Birinji.
Time Lord Victorious: All Flesh is Grass: A schism occurs in the Kotturuh on Birinji, when one woman, Inyit, speaks out against their mission. The ensuing conflict leaves Birinji a dead world and Inyit is cast out.
[Forever Autumn]: The Carrionites and Hervoken wage war on each other. The Eternals intervene, banishing both to the Deep Darkness.
The Timeless Children: Tecteun becomes the first Shabogan explorer to leave Gallifrey.
[Cat’s Cradle: Time’s Crucible]: Under the rule of the psychic Pythias, the Shabogans build an interstellar empire.
[Time Lord Victorious: The Guide to the Dark Times]: The Kotturuh spread across the cosmos. The Eternals flee, sacrificing their ability to lead their own lives in the process, the Daemons fight back and are eventually left all-but extinct and the Osiran Sutekh negotiates, gaining the gift of death for himself.
[Interference/The Book of the War]: Time travel experiments (the earliest stages of the Anchoring of the Thread) with black holes by Shabogan scientists inadvertently releases the Yssgaroth, better known as the Great Vampires, into the universe.
[Time Lord Victorious: The Guide to the Dark Times]: The Great Vampires bargain with the Kotturuh to keep their immortality, by adopting a lifestyle of feeding on other species.
[The Book of the War]/[The Multi-Faceted War]: The Great Vampires spread their Taint, creating vampiric species such as the Saturnyns, Mal’akh and humanoid Vampires.
[The Pit]/[Zagreus]: Possibly as simple defence against the spreading Taint or possibly due to prejudice, Gallifrey declares the Eternal War against the Vampires. Kopyion Liall a Mahajestu is one of the generals leading the fight.
[Time Lord Victorious: Monstrous Beauty]: Natural death, known as The Ultimate, is imposed on the Shabogans by the Kotturuh.
The Timeless Children: Tecteun finds the Timeless Child abandoned beneath a portal and brings her back to Gallifrey. The Child suffers a fatal accident and regenerates. Tecteun dedicates herself to understanding her child, spending years experimenting on them.
Time Lord Victorious: Lesser Evils: A Kotturuh woman judges Alexis, encountering the Master who attempts to influence her judgement for his future gain.
[Time Lord Victorious: The Minds of Magnox]: The Kotturuh judge Magnox, awarding its people a lifespan of 90 years.
Time Lord Victorious: Monstrous Beauty: Shabogan Commander Rassilon leads operations against the Vampires on a shadow planetoid. She encounters the Ninth Doctor and Rose. After Rose is kidnapped by Vampires, the Doctor follows them to a Coffin Ship where he helps the undead underclass to revolt against their masters. Leaving Rose to recover from Vamprisim on a moon, he sticks with the free undead.
Time Lord Victorious: The Knight, The Fool and The Dead: After travelling back to the Dark Times through a time fracture, the Tenth Doctor witnesses the Kotturuh’s imposition of death on Andalia. He meets Brian and they become involved in the lifeshroud project of Professor Fallomax and devises a way to poison the Kotturuh. As they die, he leads a mercenary fleet to seal the Kotturuh’s power source at Mordeela for good. His fleet is confronted by a Dalek Time Squad and a coffin ship, led by two of his past incarnations, who have come to stop his rewriting of history.
Time Lord Victorious: All Flesh is Grass: The Battle of Mordeela. The Tenth Doctor destroys Mordeela and seals the gateway as intended, but loses all his fleet to the Daleks and undead, except one ship which he flees in. Believing they’ve failed to correct thr timeline, the Daleks begin contingency plans and sideline the Eighth Doctor. The Ninth Doctor sticks with the Free Undead in searching for a planet to settle on.
Time Lord Victorious: Tales of the Dark Times: The Doctors continue to wander the Dark Times. The Tenth Doctor travels to a desert planet and is saved from ghosts by Brian, the Eighth Doctor investigates an abandoned spaceship with the Daleks and the Ninth Doctor investigates a planet home to an invisible creature.
Time Lord Victorious: All Flesh is Grass: After the Daleks attack the Free Undead Coffin Ship, the Eighth Doctor defects and helps them escape and begins working with the Ninth Doctor to trackdown their future self.
Time Lord Victorious: Tales of the Dark Times: On their search, the Eighth and Ninth Doctors discover a malfunctioning time machine on Hallan.
Time Lord Victorious: The Minds of Magnox: The Doctor travels to Magnox to find out if he did the right thing against thr Kotturuh. The Minds refuse to answer his question and a single Kotturuh ship arrives, demanding the Minds tell them how to survive the Doctor’s death sentence. After Brian kills the Minds, the Kotturuh destroy Magnox with a few survivors escaping due to the Doctor sending an evacuation warning. The survivors settle on Islos and found the Archive.
Time Lord Victorious: All Flesh is Grass: The Eighth & Ninth Doctors track down their future self and eventually work together to stop the Dalek Time Squad’s undead experiments and attack on pre-Time Lord Gallifrey. Inyit, now last of the Kotturuh, uses her final judgement to kill the undying Daleks and the Eighth Doctor sabotages their ship, forcing them into the Time Vortex with him onboard. The Free Undead settle on Birinji. Having come to regret his actions, the Tenth Doctor abandons his crusade to rewrite history and leaves the Dark Times.
Time Lord Victorious: Monstrous Beauty: The Ninth Doctor returns to Rose and together they leave the Dark Times.
[Cat’s Cradle: Time’s Crucible]: Rassilon, alongside Omega, creates a faction promoting scientific progress on Gallifrey, the Neo-Technologists. Experiments begin with Time Scaphes, the earliest form of timeship. At the same time, the Pythia finds her gift of foresight in decline.
Cat’s Cradle: Time’s Crucible: Rassilon leads the Intuitive Revolution on Gallifrey, overthrowing the Pythia. She commits suicide, using the last of her power to curse the people of Gallifrey to infertility, and her followers retreat to Karn. The Gallifreyan Empire begins to fragment.
[Lungbarrow]: The new Gallifreyan society is organised into Houses and looms are created to bypass the Pythia’s Curse.
The Timeless Children: As the new society is founded on Gallifrey, Tecteun finally cracks the Child’s genetic code and successfully regenerates herself. His new incarnation joins the ranks of the Founders, alongside Rassilon and Omega. The rulers of the new society become known as Time Lords.
The Evil and the Deep Black Sky: After years of study, Omega enters the Time Vortex using materialisation technology and a stasis halo. He is the first Time Lord to do so.
[Cold Fusion]: Omega creates a prototype timeship, the Machine.
[Remembrance of the Daleks]: Omega creates a semi-sentient stellar manipulator, the Hand of Omega.
Star Death/Omega: Omega’s ship is lost in the detonation of Qqaba, an attempt to gain time travel through stellar manipulation. The precise cause could be due to sabotage by Vandekirian, Omega’s assistant, on Rassilon’s orders or a saboteur from the future, Fenris. Rassilon confronts Fenris and steals his time belt when he attempts to flee. Fenris is trapped mid-transit in the Time Vortex.
[Once, Upon Time]: The Time Lords impose control on Time by directing it through six Mouri in the Temple of Atropos on a planet called Time.
The Time of Order:
Christmas on a Rational Planet/The Final Chapter: Rassilon creates the Eye of Harmony which is a hitching point of the Web of Time, and banishes the last remnants of irrationality from the universe. Rassilon declares Year 0 of a new age.
Jorus and the Voganauts: Now President, Rassilon leads the ongoing campaign against the Vampires. In a mission away from the fleet, he encounters the Vogans and gifts them his Presidential Seal.
[Damaged Goods]: The Patrex Chapter create N-Forms and deploy them against the Vampires.
The Multi-Faceted War: General Skellis reinvents bowships, turning the tide of Gallifrey’s war against the Vampires. Rassilon takes the credit.
[The Nameless City]: The Time Lords attack the Archons to steal their technology for the development of TARDISes. The 7 surviving Archons are exiled to the Great Desolation.
The Lost Dimension: Rassilon personally oversees the unsuccessful first attempted test flights of Type 1 TARDISes.
The Legacy of Time: Collision Course: The Time Lords achieve the first successful TARDIS flight on Henlan.
[So Vile a Sin]/[The Krikkitmen]: Twelve War TARDISes are created and deployed against the Vampires.
The Multi-Faceted War: Decades after the invention of the bowship, the Vampires are all-but extinct. Rassilon personally oversees the search for the King Vampire, believed to be the last surviving Great Vampire, but finds nothing. This marks the end of the Eternal War.
4-D War: Decades after the detonation of Qqaba, the Prydonian Chapter sends the Special Executive to retrieve Fenris from the Vortex for interrogation. They gather the name of his faction, the Order of the Black Sun, through mind scans. Assassins from the Black Sun then arrive, massacre the attending Time Lords and silence Fenris.
Zagreus: After the defeat of the Vampires, Rassilon retreats to his Foundry where he finalises regeneration, which is subsequently distributed to all Time Lords, and studies the future. His studies inspire his crusade against the Divergence, a future threat to Gallifrey, who he isolates in the Divergent Universe.
Ravenous: Day of the Master: Artron travels to Kolstarn to see if the natives’ manipulation of temporal energy could be used to enhance regeneration. Rassilon deploys timeships to destroy Kolstarn to eliminate his rival, unintentionally instigating the Ravenous War.
[Ravenous: Deeptime Frontier]: The Time Lords wipe out the Ravenous, save one clan who they imprison in a pocket dimension.
Empire of the Racnoss: The Time Lords are at war with the Racnoss. A spate of in-fighting affects the Racnoss Court when the Empress dismisses her Emperor.
The Runaway Bride: One of the last Racnoss Webstars escapes to the Sol System and triggers the formation of Earth.
[Sky Pirates!]/[Enemy Lines]: The Time Lords wage Time Wars against the Charon and Vondrax, among others.
[Terrorformer]/[The Hyperion Empire]: Rassilon oversees the formation of an alliance, the Alliance of Races, to fight the Great Inferno against the Hyperions. They are victorious.
[Gangland]: The Alliance moves against other common enemies, including the Cybok Imperium. Rassilon personally confronts the Imperium’s leader, Count D’if, and challenges him to a game of roulette with the Time Gun. D’if loses and is erased from existence. The Time Lords begin to fear their ruler for the first time.
Pandoric’s Box: The Time Lords wage war against the Nestenes. Rassilon deploys the Moment, created by Roppen who was one of Omega’s assistants, against them. Their powerbase in the Illia Galaxy is destroyed, leaving them a shadow of their former power. He stores the Moment in the Omega Arsenal.
Black Sun Rising: A decade after the Prydonian massacre, the Time Lords and Black Sun officially meet for the first time at a diplomatic conference at Desrault. A Sontaran ambassador sabotages the blossoming diplomatic partnership by seizing control of the mind of a member of the Special Executive and using her to assassinate the Black Sun Elder. This triggers a Time War between the Time Lords and the Order, iniaiting the skirmishes Gallifrey has already experienced.
[Underworld]/[The Quantum Archangel]: After a spate of disastrous interventions including Minyos, Rassilon imposes the Non-Interference Policy. The Time Lords will no longer interfere in the affairs of other peoples or planets.
The Timeless Children: The Division is founded to continue Time Lord interventions in secret.
[The Quantum Archangel]: The Millennium War breaks out when the Constructors of Destiny accidentally create the Mad Mind of Bophermal, an insane supercomputer which destroys its creators and seizes control of all robotic life forms. Species across the universe collaborate to defeat these vast armies, including the Daemons, Exxilons, Osirans, Kastrians, Rutans and Sontarans amongst others. Rassilon sets aside the Non-Interference Policy to enable the Time Lords to participate. After the Mad Mind’s defeat, the Guardians of Time use the Key to Time to erase all memory of the conflict.
Cold Fusion: Rassilon’s rule on Gallifrey becomes more totalitarian. Patience, wife of the Other, flees in the Machine.
Lungbarrow: As Rassilon’s tyranny grows, the Other arranges the flight of his granddaughter and plans to cast himself into the looms.
[The Five Doctors]: Rassilon is overthrown and imprisoned in the Dark Tower in the Death Zone. Legends claim he found the secret of true immortality in his final days.
Once, Upon Time: Two Ravagers, Swarm and Azure, discover the Temple of Atropos and seize control of it, believing it’s control of Time to be heresy. They evict the Mouri and bring millions of hostages in Passengers. With Time now running wild, the Division send the Child, by now calling herself the Doctor, to capture the pair and reinstate the Mouri. She succeeds.
[The Halloween Apocalypse]: Swarm is imprisoned by the Division on the Burnished Rage battleground whilst Azure is hidden within a human identity on 21st Century Earth.
And thus ends the Dark Times.
