DU1 never disappoints, from the explosive plot twists to the nostalgia and callbacks of various eras. I call this the perfect boxset to kick off a serialised story arc, featuring my favourite incarnation from childhood. Absolutely outstanding! 🤩👏

So that's three box sets in a row in, like, 3 weeks now - The Lone Centurion and Master! included- that I originally intended to buy because I thought they would be "enjoyable", that turned out great in the end. I think I underestimated Big Finish on that one, thinking Dalek Universe would just be your standard epic box set ala RTD's finales. Boy, John Dorney is on fire here, reminds me why he's my favorite BF writer in general. He's always enjoyable. But when he's firing on all cylinders, I can't stop listening until the end credits pop up. Well done.

OK its been a day time for those more detailed thoughts Start off with the clear positives Brilliant chemistry with the leads impossible to tell that they were remote recorded. Jane Salvin gives a fantastic performance damaged but not broken, remorseful but not morose, confidante but desiring of and relived to earn the Doctor's forgiveness Well done Joe Simms for superb vocal dexterity Tennant's excellent as always I really enjoyed the performance dynamic with Jane Salvin its just clear believable mature emotional exchanges. 1O so far is a lot less "Flash Bang Wallop" in this so I'm intrigued by where he'll go story wise. Oh nice work on the potted history of the Kingdom Family Now we get controversial with my apologies in advance 1. I Salute whoever did the dialogue mix, I Hated the TV show Primeval because that Actor's voice causes me physical pain, in this it only set my teeth on edge once 2. I got the resolution of the Cliff-hanger exactly right as soon as the sound effect started. The Wrong Woman works because the Cast do their upmost to sell those first 20 minutes As I Posted before though overall this is a really enjoyable. Regards mark687

I gave each of the stories and the set as a whole a 5 (rounding up from 4.6, 4.8 and 4.7 or something like that). These probably won't go down as my favorite Dorney stories ever but they're still top-notch, well above average, and there are some wonderful touches throughout. I thought the final story was just as good as well. I don't know if I'm entirely sold on the idea of a robot companion (I hope it doesn't turn into Kamelion II, been there done that eh?) but the lead cast as well as supporting cast were fantastic. It came across as an excellent production all around. I'm very much looking forward to the next installment - even without the cliffhanger.

Really enjoyed this! It's such a top-flight release in every area. One of the most polished and exciting Big Finish releases and I'm really excited to follow up on that cliff-hanger.

Listened to the first 2 episodes and that was such a great two parter. I think this is Tennants best BF performance. Especially when he was pleading with the Monk. The pain in his voice of hope being snatched away. Certainly didn’t go the way I was expecting. Yes, it was obvious that the new “Doctor” wouldn’t last the story but with all the time aspect of the story, I thought it’d be a time reversal or something like that. The reveal was great. Have to echo those saying, stay away from spoilers as much as you can. It’s worth it. 9/10

Haven't listened to The House of Kingdom yet, but here are my thoughts on the first two eps.
1.1 - Buying Time - This was the perfect introduction to the series. By the end of the episode, the relationships between the Doctor, Anya and Mark are fleshed-out and clear, and this is supported by brilliant performances by the actors. Already, Anya and Mark may be my favourite Tenth Doctor companions. The cliffhanger was absolutely sublime, and this episode sets up the next one very well. 8/10.
1.2 - The Wrong Woman - Having praised Buying Time's cliffhanger, it was the period between listening to the two episodes that I found myself thinking that it was a little "cliffhanger for cliffhanger's sake". However, this thought was demolished almost immediately when I started The Wrong Woman. This episode pays off the first part amazingly, and utilises everything that had been set up perfectly. There wasn't anything in this that wasn't justified. Again, the acting is exceptional throughout, and I know I'm not alone when I say that I really want to hear more of Gemma Whelan's Newcomer. 9/10.
The direction from Ken Bentley was, as usual, brilliant, and Howard Carter's music and sound design was, again, unsurprisingly fantastic. Added to this Simon Holub's cover art, I can't think of better way to open Dalek Universe. Bravo to everyone involved. I'll post my thoughts on The House of Kingdom once I've listened to it, but my expectations have been set high...

Fans of The Daleks' Master Plan rejoice - between the 1960s original, 4DA Season 8 and Dalek Universe, we've basically got a three-season "Master Plan" series now! (Actually, see edit below...)The Syndicate Master Plan had Varga, the alien allies of the Daleks, someone claiming to be Mavic Chen and someone from the Kingdom family. This third "season" adds back the Daleks as well as... The Visians of Mira and the MEDDLING MONK HERSELF! Steven might not be around, but the Mechanoids are (with the River Song prequel explicitly relating to his time and the War with the Krayt). I'm half expecting Katarina to make an appearance at this point! Anyway, as for the actual stories, the opening two-parter is a lot of fun (although Mark Gatiss feels a wee bit wasted in amongst all the chaos) and the third story gives some good weight to Anya's character, as did The Dalek Protocol. All this to say: Bring on July! EDIT: Actually, with the amount of expansion the original serial has had it's more like four seasons:
SERIES ONE The Destroyers Mission to the Unknown The Daleks' Master Plan 1-7 The Little Drummer Boy The Anachronauts An Ordinary Life Men of War
SERIES TWO The Sontarans The Daleks' Master Plan 8-12 Home Truths The Drowned World The Guardian of the Solar System Daughter of the Gods
SERIES THREE The Syndicate Master Plan Vol. 1 & 2
SERIES FOUR The Dalek Protocol Queen of the Mechanoids Dalek Universe 1, 2 & 3
I might be tempted to go through it all in this order at some point...

Something I'd like to add to my previous comment : I love how this is basically a continuation of Anya's arc from The Syndicate Master Plan which is the best 4DA series IMO. Technically we haven't had the chance to fully discover her yet, since "Ann Kelso" was Four's companion, but I really enjoy the development of her relationship with Ten, earning for his forgiveness. The trio in general is quite mature (as you have mentioned, Mark687) and Mark and Anya might turn out to be some of my fave BF original companions, along with Evelyn, Connie & Flip, or Liv. I think both of them bring something out of this specific incarnation of the Doctor, who's generally used to having young and naive companions from Earth around him.
Ten in general is characterized very well here. I always liked this incarnation of the Doctor, especially under Big Finish who avoid the "I talk fast to sound really clever while there's some epic music in the background" factor, but I've never been a fan of his specials, where he's just too arrogant and depressive in my opinion. Here I find he's done justice, being clever, loveable, remorseful, but not complaining that life's unfair. He's more "Doctor-y", maybe ? I don't know, but it's probably Tennant's best performance so far for Big Finish as the Tenth Doctor.

Just finished the set and it's hands-down one of my favourites from Big Finish.
1.3 - The House of Kingdom - First of all, I really hope that Andrew Smith writes for the Tenth Doctor again. I'm going to be bold here, and say that this story is my favourite characterisation of Ten so far. Smith nails the character, and I don't think I've enjoyed a Tenth Doctor story as much as this one in a while. The general consensus seems to be that the first two episodes of DU were the standout (and that this last one was still very good but not quite at the level of the others) but I actually think this is my favourite of the set, which is high praise the first two episodes were so good. I can't wait to relisten. Performances from all the cast were fantastic, and I genuinely can't think of anything to fault from this episode. The cliffhanger was superb as well. 10/10.
Overall, this set was absolutely brilliant. After Masterful, Return of the Cybermen, and The Lone Centurion, 2021 is undoubtedly my favourite year of Big Finish so far. This release is no exception. The writing was exceptional throughout, the performances never faltering, and the music & sound design and cover artwork tying it all together into what is one of the best Doctor Who boxsets Big Finish has ever produced. Mark and Anya work so well as companions of the Tenth Doctor, and it really goes to show how well non-contemporary Earth companions could be in the modern era of the show. I can't wait for the second volume. It's safe to say this is the most enthusiastic I've been about a Big Finish release since I discovered them. I'll recommend this to anyone who'll listen. 9.5/10.

The Wrong Woman is some of the most fun I’ve had listening to a Tenth Doctor story and that’s no easy feat coming after as strong a story as Buying Time. I really hope this isn’t the last we hear of this incarnation! I just really loved Gemma Whelan’s performance and I have to admit even if it was for just a little bit, I was really fooled right up until the actual reveal in The Wrong Woman.

On my second relisten now and cannot fault the enjoyability of this release. The performances throughout are stellar even to the secondary characters from the exploration scenes in the first few minutes to the finale and all the little scenes in between .Got to say Juliet Aubrey definitely grabs me with her vocal performance so congratulations on casting such a great team of actors.

I'm not quite ready to weigh in on this set yet, but I gotta say, I am absolutely blown away so far. I've stopped listening after the second story, simply because this two-parter was that good. Basically, I completely feel as though I've gotten my money's worth, and would just like to bask in the warming glow of these spectacular stories before moving on. Gotta let everything sink in, ya' know?
And The Wrong Woman really feels like it should be the last story in a boxset. It's one hell of a climax! I'll definitely have a lot to say about these stories once I get around to it, but for now I'll simply say that this set perfectly nails the best strengths of Tenant's Doctor, and would easily compare (very) favorably to the very best episodes of RTD's era of the show. I've definitely had some not-very-nice things to say about the 10DAs in the past, but after The 10th Doctor and a River Song and now, especially, this i am very confident in saying that a Big Finish now has a perfect grasp of how to render the best parts of Tenant's Doctor in audio.
I absolutely cannot wait for the rest of this range, and hope to be equally surprised by unexpected familiar faces popping in to liven things up. Ever since I seriously got into Big Finish last summer, I've been waiting--eagerly--for an opportunity to dive into one of these post-release discussions for one of Big Finish's absolutely spectacular releases. You know: tip-off be part of that initial reaction to something like The Master of Callous, or The Invention of Death, or The Red Lady.
Well, here I am!

Yes i have to agree it’s the best characterisation of ten so far and most definitely makes me want to jump to the next set and am pretty sure it will be three stories I will play again and again as it’s one of those sets where you play one and then immediately want the rest always a great sign...

I have to agree with all of you who say that this is Tennant's best BF 10th Doctor work. It really is. The entire set is superb. The entire cast just reeks of chemistry. I love in episode one when Anya says to him "You don't have to run all the time!" Great piece of characterization. These three just spark off of each other. Anya and Mark have jumped to just below Donna as my favorite Tenth Doctor companions.

He's baaaack. In a pretty explosive sort of way as well. Chalk up another who's stopped temporarily just after The Wrong Woman. I've a feeling that if I listened to one more, the wait between this volume and the next would be agonising. A really good showing of the Tenth Doctor, his complicated history with Anya and Mark Seven's delightfully comme il faut patter (I'd like to meet his programmer). It's only two hours in, but I'd be very happy to consider this the start of Series 4B. Stroll on Volume 2!
