He's baaaack. In a pretty explosive sort of way as well. Chalk up another who's stopped temporarily just after The Wrong Woman. I've a feeling that if I listened to one more, the wait between this volume and the next would be agonising. A really good showing of the Tenth Doctor, his complicated history with Anya and Mark Seven's delightfully comme il faut patter (I'd like to meet his programmer). It's only two hours in, but I'd be very happy to consider this the start of Series 4B. Stroll on Volume 2! Currently my absolute favourite Tenth Doctor BF audio release thus far, along with Out of Time 1 and Free Speech. Speaking of "Series 4B", I consider Dalek Universe to be the immediate predecessor of the 2009 Specials, with The End of Time acting as the overall Series 4 finale.

My opinions on this set varied wildly, but by the end I thoroughly enjoyed it! (I will discuss spoilers below, so beware if you haven't finished the set yet!) I was really enjoying Buying Time right up until the cliffhanger. I'm not a fan of undoing history as an excuse to wipe away continuity-impossible events, and no matter how many different ways I thought of getting out of the cliffhanger with it not really being the Doctor, none of them felt very believable. Then, The Wrong Woman went and played out the only theory I thought could make sense - it was another Time Lord impersonating the Doctor. I hadn't considered that technology could be used to fake the regeneration though, and I thought this Time Lord was giving up two regenerations (one to look like Tennant, one to change out of him) for this con and that seemed too far-fetched. But the tech twist worked perfectly to counter that problem! I was struggling with TWW to begin with though as the characterisation of "the Doctor" was really, really bad. If they'd made that a genuine, to-be-wiped-later incarnation, I would have been more than relieved when that happened. But the whole time I was thinking, "Of all the characters in the Whoniverse, the only one I could imagine acting like this is [insert name of twist character here]", and lo and behold it was them! I genuinely cheered at the reveal! It was then I looked at the author and saw John Dorney's name and I realised I shouldn't have had any concerns - as far as I'm concerned, he's yet to write a single script that doesn't have some sort of satisfying explanation/conclusion. While The House of Kingdom was good, it didn't quite reach the same level as the two-part opener. It was meant to be smaller-scale and more character focussed though, so for what it was it was good. The hatred Anya had for her uncle occasionally felt a bit forced for the sake of keeping up the dramatic tension, but I enjoyed the story regardless. I wasn't super blown away by the cliffhanger, but then I also don't have any context for it yet. It kind of just came out of nowhere and I wasn't really sure what to make of it. I'm sure Dalek Universe 2 will be worth the wait to find out though (And fingers crossed my vinyl copies arrive in time to re-listen to the set before then!)

I'm part way through the second episode and trying not to look at spoilers. I'll say this much: I hope unbound 11th doc is out and Tennant back in before the end of the episode.
I'd be more than a little miffed if I bought a box set billed as starring Tennant as the Doctor, only for him to regenerate into what is effectively an unbound (ie, "non-cannon") incarnation that closes out the set.

So the self-proclaimed sceptic tried this out and I’ve got through Buying Time/ The Wrong Woman so far. Well first off it’s nice that the Tenth Doctor Adventures have finally broken free of emulating middle of Series 2/4 stories. Nothing like this would have been done during the RTD era. It’s definitely a project that could only be made by Big Finish. The pacing is well done and does fit the idea of opening on a finale. I think the ending did rely a little too much on the Doctor operating sci-fi tech that wasn’t really explained, but the ride to that point was undeniably entertaining. There are twists, which I knew the gist to from lurking around reviews (I personally don’t mind spoilers all that much, a good story should work even without surprise on its side). They centre on Gemma Whelan’s Newcomer, who is a lot of fun. As this is a 9 episode arc, I’m almost certain she’ll be back. Tennant’s performance here is one of his best Big Finish turns that I’ve heard. He’s clearly onboard with this project wholesale. Mark Gatiss’ villain really suffers due to the twists and turns of the story. The description of him as a “malevolent businessman” in Buying Time’s synopsis is his entire character. We get no sense of why he’s doing this, except money. I have a plot question pertaining to him- {Spoiler} He already has working time travel. So why the big launch? What does his big machine accomplish that whatever means he was already using to send the assassins back in time wasn’t? Is it all a PR stunt? Am I convinced? Well I’m certainly more hopeful than the “LOOK OUT HOW MANY OLD CHARACTERS ARE IN THIS/OMG THIS IS SO SO EPIC” advertising had led me to be. It is continuity heavy, but is more bulldozing through it than stopping to revere or do a greatest hits. If The House of Kingdom sticks the landing, I think I’ll be back for part 2.

Like many i have also stopped at the wrong woman, think ill savour the last part for may to make the wait less bad but yeah, can only really echo what everyone else has said, especially sherlocks comment about the marketing. I really think the marketing has done this set a disservice. Okay maybes not sales wise, daleks do sell, but just that it looks like nostalgia meets nostalgia. Callbacks and sequels and not doing anything new. This set isn’t that but i certainly don’t begrudge people for thinking it is as thats all the marketing has made it out to be when its so much more than that, so far anyways. This is the lost tennant series 5 made for bbc7 back in the year the show was of the air. Not some terry nation best hits.
Still Marketing is just that - Marketing. To get sales. Its the storys that matter and boy are the stories great. I have not listened to a lot of Dorneys work (well, ratio wise -he has wrote a 100 so comparatively i have heard a lot less) and the ones i have i have found good. But that opening two parter is the first time ive seen why people adore his work - this is one of the best big finish two parters ever. The dialogue is sparkling - like steven moffat level stuff - fast interactions, genuinely funny quips (“i cant see you go” “then close your eyes”) great twists and turns and some emotional moments between the characters, especially the doc and anya whos really starting to come into her own. It feels like the perfect blend of rtd who and moffat who with David tennat and Jane slavin making the perfect leading actors. Sure its not as deep emotionally as say a peri and the piscon paradox or as hauntingly insane as the natural history of fear. But its an amazing story, plotted well, acted superbly, written amazingly, with some excellent plot twists - Top ten material for sure.
Hopefully the set can keep up the pace, as can the other two sets but its a bloody great opening and even if the rest is bad, i feel like this is worth the price of admission (and the pretty artwork - going to look amazing on my wall)

I don't mind a bit of nostalgia but I do expect a few Daleks in something called Dalek Universe ! The stories were fun and David Tennant was on top form here, this was classic Tenth Doctor. I really loved his performance... unfortunately, the set was a bit light on exterminating. This would want to change in the next set!!!

They shot a machine 😅😂 but yeah i mean theres no reason really this should be called dalek universe as its a but if a silly name anyways and it clearly isn’t a Dalek story even if they are major players later on. Ah well

I have just finished episode 1 Buying Time - wow...actually that wow isn’t big enough...WOW
I have decided to go back and listen to it all again. The last time I did that was The War Valeyard....hmm I am sensing a certain correlation But that was the last episode of a box set, not the first!!
Big Finish love stories and at times like this I love Big Finish stories!
Oh and just once again WOW

Well, that concern came to nothing. Started the third episode...

When I first heard the Wrong Woman's voice, I thought - what's the Twelve doing there? But of course, wrong actress. I also got images of Joyce Grenfell... "George, don't do that."
(if only, Mr Dorney, if only...)

Finished The House of Kingdom. It’s adds a nice bit of backstory for Anya.
One thing I’m confused about is why Anya and Mark decided to stick with the Doctor. Anya even points out the person they’re seeking is really for the Doctor’s personal gain, so it’s not a SSS mission, and they both seem pretty duty bound individuals so how come they’ve agreed to tag along?
I think I’ll probably be back for part 2. This saga is more creative than the advertising suggests and I’m curious where they’ll take the Tenth Doctor.

Hmm. Although House was nice for keeping us in that time period with the Mechonoids and related items, that ending... Really? Again? How many times has that been done to Mark? I've heard four stories with him in and it's been twice so far.
Still, looking forward to the next set.

I was just looking at the poll above. I'm surprised that someone gave The Wrong Woman a 2/5. Whoever you are, you are difficult to impress!
