A story I first dismissed as a bit daft when I first tried it, but after another go I really enjoyed it.
The Time of the Daleks is often singled out as probably the weakest story in the second batch of 8th Doctor audios for the Monthly Range. I couldn't disagree more.
It is very much an excuse for writer Justin Richards to show off his Shakespearean knowledge, and why not eh? Combining the best known playwright in history with Doctor Who and the Daleks is inspired...if admittedly a touch bonkers.
Which is slightly ironic, because the story is based around the Daleks attempting to alter known time, so all people will ever remember is a history where the Daleks have always ruled; what has been and what will always be type of thing, and part of this shift is that people in mid 21st century Nu-Britain (after the Euro-wars, and under the benevolent dictatorship of General Mariah Learman, played with gusto by Dot Smith) are forgetting key people and events as the time lines are erased, such as the works of William Shakespeare.
I especially love the music and sound design on this story, it adds great depth and atmosphere; the hall of mirrors and clocks, the makeshift time machine blowing a gasket when we first meet Professor Osric and the soundtrack punctuated by what only can be described as distant time explosions. Ian Potter did the sound design and Nick Briggs the music, which is a winner in my book. Paul McGann also seems to be having great fun.
Not a classic, but a very good 7 out of 10.

How lovely. I think it's widely under-rated (and there are things I did in the sound design that don't sell it all as well as they should- steep learning curve) and remain very fond of it. It's a deceptively smart script. I was chatting to someone about it just recently, a quiet reappraisal is bubbling along, I think. Probably because General Learman is about to seize power...

I also remember enjoying this one very much, a clever script full of satire on the Britain of its time around the year 2000, and the sound design and music gave the fantastical settings and happenings the strange reality they needed. I still have to explore some of the middle Eight+Lucie seasons, but right now, this second season with Charley is my favourite for Eight and I think every story in it is a winner.

When I first listened to this there were heaps of Dalek releases and I honestly did not give it a fair go but I still managed to get a copy of it on Cd and as many know itβs my preferred way of listening...and you know what I actually like this first episode and itβs little Shakespeare references .As we know Shakespeare is getting a little over used but this one was written in 2002 so as a point of reference it was ahead of the game and if I remember he doesnβt actually meet Shakespeare in this saga so that also is a benefit. So it is pretty gripping first episode

this isnβt as annoying as I first heard it,I do not know why?Perhaps Dalek overload? All little things in it the Euro Wars, dictators etc and the Daleks manipulation of time and the general alteration of even the Daleks feel new for the time it was written.Paul and India definitely give it their all as do all the cast now for Episode 3 can it keep up the pace?

Totally gripping 3rd Episode I think my mind being engaged purely on weight lifting workout and the cd has helped with me engaging with this story so all my previous thoughts of this story have been tossed aside...do you think if I give Jack a shot I will really like him ππππππ³

Yes good story I repent of earlier views....and actually quite important as regards Charleys evolution of her story as regards the Web of Time and actually worthy of more relistening as long as I am Dalek free for a few weeks ππ

Still not sure what to make of this... In the end, Shakespeare is not that relevant to the plot and/or ends up being quite a peripheral character. I felt that 'anyone' could have been switched for the Shakespeare role. It felt very much like a mixture of Power, Evil and Day of the Daleks and went for that set-up.
The idea of using mirrors and clocks to promote time travel is an interesting concept, but not really enough to hold my attention. I guess that Charley being the 'thing' that makes it all work is the most interesting and the final scene serves as a good lead into Neverland. The idea of 'time out of joint' is the underlying theme, but it never gets going.
There is some interesting satire, but its not really pushed that far. I genuinely thought that the Daleks were superfluous here and whilst it is 'nice' for McGann to meet them, they aren't essential.
Probably one of the weakest 8th Doctor stories I've heard, which is a shame as I've enjoyed the run so far.

I've heard this 2 or 3 times now, and every time I want it to be better than it is.
