Think this might be my favourite of the Third Doctor sets so far. Sadie was so good as Sarah in The Gulf and there were some lines that she delivered where she sounded almost exactly like Lis. {Spoiler} I really liked the tie-in to S8 with the Master aiding the Unzal off-screen. With Dankworth under the influence of the Master, it could be interesting if they utilised that for a future story if they include the Delgado Master in the future.

Sadie gets Sarah's mannerisms spot on. This was a wonderful set; and a perfect example of what Big Finish can do when they are inspired and not relying on 'x meets y' gimmicks. Great dialogue, great performances, great sound. I really wish more releases could be like this one.

It would be unfair for me to comment on The Unzal Incursion because I was in a bad mood and quite distracted while listening to it (but "the incursion" was definitely said WAY to many times). I was very attentive while listening to The Gulf however, and I must say that I loved it! Even though I was aware it was quite slow moving, I was completely absorbed by it. I'm not sure I'd enjoy it as much on a second listen, but since it'll probably be about 5 years before I get to hear it again (based on past experience), I probably won't mind at that point I've got to give special mention to Sadie Miller. I would genuinely get a shiver down my spine every few minutes as she absolutely nailed the vocal performance and qualities of Elisabeth Sladen. She was a little hit and miss in Return of the Cybermen, but if she's already this good by her second story then I simply can't wait to hear her in future releases as she gets even better! If there is one thing I didn't think was so great about The Gulf (come on, I've been really nice so far, I'm allowed one gripe ), it's that I truly feel Tim Treloar has become a bit lazy in his impression. I actually specifically re-listened to the first volume of Third Doctor Adventures over the last few days to see if maybe I wasn't as picky about his impression in the earlier days of the range, but I found that he was much, *much* more consistent in that first volume. It feels like he's kept all things he was doing wrong in that first release and scrapped all the things he was doing right. These days he barely sounds like Pertwee at all, and is simply playing a character that we're told is the Doctor without there really being any resemblance to the original. I did love The Gulf though!

Just finished off The Gulf. Like the previous story, it's nice and solid and a lovely recreation of that era without being backwards facing. It's so good to get a Third Doctor and Sarah story. Sadie Miller is wonderful and when she hits, she's uncanny and a delight to listen to. She's improved on Return of the Cybermen and I so hope that we get Season 12 and 13 audios at some point, as well as the odd Season 11 set one in future Third Doctor volumes. Guest cast wise Wendy Craig is great and I'm glad to see her get some good material so soon after the appalling Hollow Crown from the recent First Doctor set. I have to agree with Whovitt about Tim Treloar and becoming lazy with his impression, though. I don't agree that he barely sounds like Pertwee, in fact I think that's all he really has going for him in this set, but there's little resemblance to the Third Doctor a lot of the time in this. I think I mentioned it in Volume 6, but it's more noticeable given how good Ashford and Miller both are. Treloar is playing it as a Jon Pertwee soundalike, but there's not really a performance in there, neither what Jon would have done as the Doctor, or even just the Third Doctor as a fictional character. He brings down what is otherwise a really solid set and a return to form for this range. I hope the presumed reboot next year brings us a better performance from him, retains what made this set so good and brings Jo into the fold.

Loved both of these stories, each captures the mood of the season & both were well written & performed by the cast.
Daisy & Sadie you both done your mother's proud recreating there roles whist making them your own.

I did love The Gulf though! Speaking as someone who really adores this range… yeah, I don’t think I’d be honest with myself if I said I don’t see what you’re talking about. I didn’t feel it was so apparent in The Unzal Incursion - maybe because I was just so enthralled with the other performances - but listening to The Gulf it was more noticeable to me. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s unrecognizably the Third Doctor, but I feel like his performance is a little less varied than it should be and it’s not conveying information correctly. For instance, there’s a moment in The Gulf where the Doctor clearly realizes he’s met a person who hasn’t yet done what he knows her for, but it’s only clear from the writing - I don’t think Treloar performed it the way it was meant to come across. It’s subtle little things like that for me, but it is a bit of a step down from the heights I know Treloar’s Third Doctor can and has reached.

Is it Treloar performance at fault or Nick Briggs direction?
I did notice performance wise Treloar wasn't quite on point however i enjoyed both stories despite this minor gripe.

They've both done pretty well in the past, Briggs and Treloar both brought us The Tyrants of Logic and Primord. Part of me wonders if it isn't them getting used to a new set of Doctor/companion dynamic after having Katy Manning as Jo for so long. We've gone from an impressionist and an original cast member from the show (Treloar/Manning) to a completely soundalike cast (Treloar/Ashford/Miller). If it were Jon Pertwee meeting up with Caroline John and Lis Sladen again, I'd be inclined to point there, but the truth is that this is pretty much new territory for the actors. They've only just started out. Treloar has to relearn not just the Third Doctor, but the Third Doctor with Liz/Sarah. As with all things, I think that'll come with time. It's just practice.

This was another great release. The 2 companions were the highlight for me - Katy is wonderful, but each Dr needs a healthy variety of travelling companions to keep them fresh.
Unzaal felt like there was going to be a follow-up with more adventures featuring Seargent Atah and that BF are setting up a "season within a season" mini arc, but maybe not.
Only thing I didn't like was the foreshadowing of the Master in Unzaal. That sort of thing is fine if it genuinely adds something, but in this case it added nothing whatsoever to the story and was the worst kind of "just-because-we-can" continuity reference.

I understand that 3DA was partially recorded in my hometown Ealing, during lockdown. Wasn't it one of the stories in this volume?

I am in the midst of The Gulf (Part 3 right now) and I have to stay that Lucy Goldie as Laurel/The Gulf is very effective. The more I hear her, the more pain I feel. My stomach is really getting nervous hearing this.

Listening to all of the 3DAs again and started here as it is one of my favourites, with The Gulf one of the best DW audios Big Finish have produced.
The Unzal Incursion by Mark Wright:
While Jo will always be my favourite 3rd Doctor companion, both Liz and Sarah come close (one of the many reasons 3 is one of my favourite doctors/eras), and with how little Liz has had in terms of expanded media, it's wonderful not only to have Daisy Ashford take on the role from her mum so excellently, but also to have such wonderful stories. While The Unzal Incursion lives in The Gulf's shadow, it's still a 4.5 star story. It feels like Season 7 through and through, gives Liz the rightful spotlight, and has some bloody good action. And I do love how breakneck the pacing is, making it feel like a proper 70's Bond film almost.
The Gulf by Tim Foley:
Just brilliant in every aspect. All of Foley's best trademarks are here, with fantastic dialogue, a properly creepy alien baddie, wonderful character work, and at points, bloody emotional. Tim Trelor and Sadie Miller give one of their best respective performances. Love it to bits this one.
