I wasn’t sold on this when I read the details earlier, but as the hours have passed I’m getting fonder of it the more I think about it! I loved the variety of stories and the writers, but I think it was the cast list that soured my view to begin with; a few of the same names and others not era authentic.
I struggle a bit with Short Trips featuring one-off lead characters, which I mentioned elsewhere yesterday, as they corner themselves into being repetitive due to the limitations of the format. They have to be character driven and feature some form of emotional twist so we’re invested in them in such a short space of time. Perhaps that’s because we now routinely get it with the Paul Spragg releases, but I would generally prefer an established character instead.
As mentioned, I’ve grown fonder of it as the hours have passed and I’m looking forward to it for the sheer variety. I always liked the left field Short Trips, so another one for the Master and a Sontaran one are welcomed. I’m guessing Adele Anderson’s will feature Tamasan, so that’s another left field one, but if not then it’s era authentic at least. So on reflection it could only the Ayehsa Antoine that my concerns could apply to!

The stories themselves sound interesting and having listened to the Lickyrwick Abomination recently it made me realise how much I’ve missed the Short Trips so I’m looking forward to this. Though I do wish that Eleven and/or Twelve were involved in this set since Short Trips and the Doctor Chronicles are the only way we’re going to get stories with them for the foreseeable. Maybe Volume 12…

I enjoy the Short Trips so I am looking forward to this release. But I will repeat myself again and again, I so miss the monthly ST releases. It was such a satisfying way to end the month, knowing that I had one to look forward to. Hmm, I think I'll email the podcast about it.

Jacob Dudman is playing a Doctor in the Sontaran story, I assume it'll be either Eleven or Twelve! I’d have thought Ten, given he’s on the cover. He's in the Fear of Flying story, though - "a terrifying flight with the Tenth Doctor". Not that they couldn't double up on Tennant stories, I suppose! The cover appears to feature the focal character if there's a photo of them (a Sontaran, Adric, The Master) and the Doctor of the story if there isn't... Culshaw is also listed as "The Master/The Doctor" in the credits - so I assume the Third Doctor will be appearing.

I'm very iffy about this release. I'm not a huge fan of Jake Dudman as The Doctor.

I’m responding to an old post but I agree with you so much about this. I loved getting a monthly dose of Short Trips and have really missed them. I’ll try to just listen to one of these a month so I at least get six months of ST fun.

It also helped that they were short, so you could listen to them more casually... IE you wouldn't need to block out a big chunk of time to listen to them. And, of course, you could also pick-and-choose individual stories if you weren't interested in all of them. I suspect this change is happening because BF noticed more people were buying maybe 4-6 STs yearly rather than bundling/subscribing, in which case they'd be easy to persuade to spend a bit more money if separate purchases were removed.

Could be. But I feel like BF have decided that monthly releases are out of fashion, for whatever reason. And you're right, it probably is financial. As of now, Torchwood is the only monthly release that they have, and I keep waiting for the announcement that this wonderful range will be switching to boxsets only. If and when that happens, it will be our loss.

The narrated and performed distinctions are interesting. It would imply performed is being done in the first person, as Adric & Ace are in the Waterhouse & Aldred stories, respectively, but are down as narrated.

As the other Short Trips have got them I'll set Individual Discussion Threads for each story

I do think this change in format has somewhat reinvigorated the Short Trips range. Certainly more standouts here than 2019 (the last year I wholly subscribed on). Hopefully start of a bright new future for this range.

It’s a good solid volume with a varied selection of stories & characters & narrators. I much prefer the Short Trips to be individual releases, but if this boxset format is the only way for Short Trips to continue, then so be it. I’m also glad they invite writers back to do more stories.
I hope someday Frobisher makes an appearance. & Clara’s echoes. 😁
