I'm a little bit dubious about this without additional information. The price isn't all that competitive based on the current Short Trips format; it essentially means you're getting one free.
Personally, they'll have to really up their game here. Six stories means there's no excuse for a lack of era authentic readers and ideally not comprising of the same old Peter Purves, Frazer Hines, Sarah Sutton, Sophie Aldred, etc. They're all great, but the lovely thing about the Short Trips is its variety and that should also extend to the different storytelling.
If this change was done three or four years ago I'd be a bit more excited as it would've probably meant a variety of everything, but based on the last two years I'm not so sure. As soon as I read the news I was picturing a set comprising of Frazer Hines, Sarah Sutton & Sophie Aldred and three Jacob Dudman tales, with the latter being tales including the obligatory pre-Rose Ninth Doctor and told in the first person.
Yeah, to really appeal to me it should be a variety of readers and eras with some innovative or experimental stories. Essentially it should be the Short Trips in a nutshell.

Interesting. Back to the original volume format. I agree with shallacatop’s criteria. The Short Trips are at their best when pushing the boat out and going for variety stories that could only be told in this short format. The original volumes sport some lovely oddities ( Rise and Fall, A Stain of a Red in Sand, The Deep, Letting Go, 1963, Chain Reaction) and that’s what I’d be looking for here. Give me the experimental stories. Whilst I’m lurking in the Short Trips corner, what have the highlights from this year been? Might try and get back into the range, as I dropped out after finding last year’s series a bit uninspiring.

Whilst I’m lurking in the Short Trips corner, what have the highlights from this year been? Might try and get back into the range, as I dropped out after finding last year’s series a bit uninspiring. The Infinite Today was nice, with Katy's take on the Doctor being a blend of the Second, Third & Eleventh. She doesn't see which incarnation, just the Doctor. Deleted Scenes was lovely, although very similar to The Vanity Trap in the Sixth Doctor & Peri; given the niche story type it might be a bit too familiar. Her Own Bootstraps was better than I thought it'd be too and I'm not overly keen on pre-Rose stories either. Having said that, you might find them to be more of the same. The range is lacking the experimental stories we have got in previous years.

Oh. Fewer Short Trips. That's too bad.
I agree that the cool, experimental vibe of Series 6-8 is what I want to hear more of - with characters like Jago and Litefoot, Jackie Tyler, the Crispy Master, the Monk, the Prime Minister, Adric, Narvin, Charlie Sato...
The last two seasons have had nothing but TV companions and Charley Pollard. Only the two Eleventh Doctor stories stand out as something unusual - Regeneration Impossible and The Infinite Today.
Not that this means the stories have been weak - far from it - while they've been largely traditional, they've been good stories which fit their format well. I'd just like to see the envelope pushed a bit more!

Hmm. I think like the rest of you I’ll have to wait for further details before I make my final judgements.

Not thrilled about this. I've been only picking up the Short Trips for Doctors and 'guest stars' (Master... Monk... J&L...) I'm trying/able to be completionist about. Buying this will probably mean paying out for something I ordinarily wouldnt have gone for in order to get the stuff I would.

Don't forget to make the monthly Torchwoods into boxsets too, so that I have nothing left to look forward to on a monthly basis :-(

I know they announced 6 stories for the forthcoming release, but I do wonder if they're expanding it to a total of 12 instead - hence the delay?

With the continued delays of this and the Second Doctor Companion Chronicles, I wonder if they’re having difficulties scheduling Frazer Hines?
He’s a regular contributor to the Short Trips and as much as I want this upcoming set to be era authentic with a varied cast list compared to what we’ve been getting, I’m not expecting anything more than any combination of Peter Purves, Frazer Hines, Katy Manning, Louise Jameson, Sarah Sutton, Sophie Aldred & Jacob Dudman, frankly.

A lot of new writers in this which is always good. And I’m glad they’re going down the route of having Short Trips focused on other characters rather than just the Doctor.
In fact, it would be a good way to reintroduce Frobisher now that I think about it. Narrating about one of his cases for an example.

So Tedds is the second Paul Spragg writer to get another shot, after our own Selim. Cool.
