For those who have a copy of the Lost in Time boxset, is there any reason to really own it anymore? Especially since stories are getting animated?
If so, why?

I suppose just for the novelty of it? It’s all we really had a for a while before they decided that animation was the way forward. An interesting artefact from a much simpler time if you will.

I think there is. None of the Hartnell stories on there seem to be up for animation. Plus, there are some good bonus features on there.
The Troughton discs, admittedly are not as essential as they once were. I haven't kept up on all the animated DVDs - IIRC they made the very weird decision to animate the extant Faceless Ones episodes. Are the originals available on that disc as a supplement? If not, Lost in Time is the place to get it.
EDIT: Yes, they are, mark is a font of information.
Taking out everything that eventually got a standalone release, Lost in Time's Troughton discs are left with:
Evil of the Daleks 2 The Abominable Snowmen 2 The Wheel in Space 3, 6 Space Pirates 2
So overall, I'd still say yes, if you want every single existing episode on disc, including the orphans. When we watch missing stories, we like to have the existing episodes alongside the recons in the best quality possible.
If you skip over stories with missing episodes anyway, then no, it's not a release for you, I guess.

Its got the majority of the Orphan Eps on it
Truth be told the more Whats the Point release choice is Aztecs Special Edition having Galaxy 4 EP 3 on it when in fact a re-issue of Lost in Time with that and Underwater Menace EP 2 included would've made more sense at the time IMO.

Regards mark687 Yeah, I didn't understand why Galaxy 4 and UM2 were sat on for so long. Lost In Time Special Edition made much more sense to me. I fail to see what The Aztecs has to do with any of it. I guess that was just the next Hartnell release in the pipeline and they decided "Eh, good enough." Both included on the Animation Reconstruction Regards mark687 Ah, good. Thanks muchly.

It also depends on just how much of a completionist you are. The Lost in Time set contains two small portions of footage that aren't available anywhere else (as far as I know): the Missing in Action special feature has a slightly longer version of one of the 8mm clips from The Power of the Daleks: Episode 1 (a shorter version is included in the actual clip collection for the story on Lost in Time, and this version was used for both of the animated releases too for some reason), and a longer version of the censored clip of Robson in the helicopter from Fury from the Deep: Episode 5 (I have absolutely no idea why the version on the new animated release is shorter than normal). They add up to something like 5 seconds so it really isn't that much, but if you're after the "definitive collection" as it were, then I'd say go for it. Besides, there are still a number of episodes in this set that aren't available anywhere else and likely won't be for quite some years to come. It's probably the only way you're going to get releases of The Dalek's Master Plan episodes before the Season 3 Blu-ray set comes out, for example, and that probably won't be for some time yet...

It's probably the only way you're going to get releases of The Dalek's Master Plan episodes before the Season 3 Blu-ray set comes out, for example, and that probably won't be for some time yet... I would estimate that 60% of the episodes are not available elsewhere, so the idea of it being redundant is a bit premature. As you say, it will be a while at least. It is no more so due for disposal from the shelves than any other classic season not yet released on Blu-Ray, so the initial posters query would have been answered by a cursory bit of research. Plus there are some decent extras, such as Julian Glover's fascinating commentary during an episode of The Crusade, where he discusses how TV Drama had changed so much from the dialogue rich era of The Crusade and, and speculated as to how the then forthcoming (in 2004) revived series of Doctor Who would turn out.
