Rhys is planning a lads' night in. Barbie in the back yard, few tins, mates and bants. But the only person who turns up is Ianto – who hasn't been invited. Hell is other people, especially when they've brought board games.
Something goes wrong. The two of them could be trapped together for eternity at a barbecue where the sausages never cook, and worse, the brewskis remain forever out of reach.

Similar themes to 1 character's previous Monthly appearance, but the other character is the focus and it uses his honest humanity to soften the listener up better for the changing emotional beats in another thoroughly believable performance by Kai Owen.

Now this was a really good Torchwood story! Small but powerful. If I'm being honest, I think the majority of the Torchwood releases are pretty run-of-the-mill, but this is a definite stand out. It's the stories like this that keep me subscribing to this range, because when they're good, they're really good. To me, what makes this one work is that it takes a serious subject matter and takes it seriously, and that made the drama feel incredibly real (my TV comparison would be Adrift). Also, this can be chalked up to the very short list of BF releases that actually made me cry. The scene where Rhys is trying to comfort Deidre was truly heart-breaking, and Kai Owen performed it beautifully.

Out of curiosity Mr. Handcock, was it a coincidence or planned that this release came out the day before International Mene's Day?

Once I've delivered the content, I'm not always across the more intricate plans. Occasionally I'll flag thematic links or anniversaries, but I wasn't aware of the scheduling for this one.

Whilst I will say that it did drag a little around the middle for me (though that might just because I was wandering round town whilst listening to it), I did really enjoy this release! Whilst I don't know if I'd want to hear a Rhys/Ianto release regularly, I certainly wouldn't mind one 'every once in a while' (like with the Andy & Owen pairing) Torchwood: Come for the fun, stay for the emotion...

I was waiting for reviews before I bought this because I do feel that since Dinner and a Show, the monthly range has become a bit comedic. And of course, with a title like this, it does have a lot of funny lines - all expertly timed. Also, it was so much more than that (of course). A story 'with a lot of heart', which is difficult to write about without going into deep spoiler territory, and this is better going into without knowing what paths the story is going to take. Very nice.
In the extras, I was interested that this was recorded during lockdown - why I should be surprised by this, I don't know. Unlike ongoing television productions, that look like actors standing two meters apart in a virtually empty studio, listeners to audios - like me - can be utterly oblivious to recording conditions. The three main players, and of course the production crew (Joe Meiners' sound design is excellent), deserve extra kudos for such a polished sounding audio.

I don't want to spoil anything about this episode because it would just be like giving everything away, but I loved it. Among the best Torchwood MR stories, up there with the likes of Broken, The Hope or Cascade. I don't know who decided to hire Tim Foley in the first place, but he's been my favorite Torchwood writer since his first script now. You deserve some serious congratulations, the ending made me tear up for a few minutes.
Props to Kai Owen too, he's spectacular here.
5/5

My take on 'Rhys and Ianto's' is now up at CultBox: another great odd couple pairing... insightful, affecting and very funny.

Have you tried his podcast drama 'North West Footwear Database'? It's bizarre and fantastic!

Just listened to it. The story was dedicated to Tim Foley's guinea pig, Bunny. We used to have a pair of guinea pigs. They always used to make very eager noises when they saw me as I would be the one bringing them kale to eat.
Another good one.
