I had a great time with Steed and Tara and Mother over the Bank Holiday weekend, one episode a day from Friday and enjoyed it immensely. Four fun, suitably preposterous and very entertaining stories with the usual larger-than-life characters and (I was very pleased to find) lots of material for Mother in this set! And a very special guest star in the final story!
This might be my favourite volume since the first one, but then I've enjoyed them all. Vol 2 took a slight dip imo (purely because I thought the source material wasn't as strong as that for the other sets) but it's been a great run in delightful company and I'm very sorry to see it come to an end.
Perhaps one day, the obvious will happen and BF will get the rights to create new stories in the authentic style? The Avengers are always needed.

I loved this set, perhaps more than the previous sets. When you say sorry to see it come to an end do you mean this particular set, or is this it for the range itself?

Agree that this is a fantastic set. Probably the best one yet. There was nothing in the final episode or interviews to indicate that it was the last Avengers release, so hopefully there will be more. Certainly there are quite a few more comic strips and short stories from TV Comics which could be adapted so fingers crossed that this isn't the last we hear from Steed and co!

I did mean the range - these Comic Strip Adaptations were all announced a long time back, two/three years ago and nothing at all about 'The Avengers' since.
I don't know if there is any further adaptable material that would be suitable? As yet BF don't have the rights to create new stories from scratch (as far as I know, but I'd love to be wrong!) so currently the brolly and bowler are on on the hatstand.

Having done some research into Avengers novels and comic strips, there would seem to be quite a lot of material Big Finish could adapt if they wished to and the copyright, etc, could be cleared: Steed and Dr Keel: one comic strip from TV Crimebusters annual Steed and Mrs Gale: one novel and 4 comic strip serials (which were published in newspapers) Steed and Mrs Peel: seven novels, 14 (of which 4 have been adapted) comic strips or short stories from TV Comics and its Christmas annuals or summer specials; 8 comic strips/short stories from The Avengers 1967 annual; 4 comic strips from The Avengers No1 comic; The Growing up of Emma Peel comic strip from June and Schoolfriend comic; plus other stories from the Steed and Mrs Peel comic which was published intermittently in the 1990s and 2010s; Steed and Tara King: four novels; 34 (of which 8 have been adapted) comic strips or short stories from TV Comics and its Christmas annuals or summer specials; 12 comic strips/short stories from the Avengers 1968 and 1969 annuals. There may well be others! Obviously, I've no idea how much of this would be available to Big Finish and be suitable for adapting.

Thanks, that's great research and it's good to know there is at least potential material out there! Some of the Comic Strip adaptations were very loose adaptations weren't they (and much better for it, judging by those descriptions of the original stories in the interviews), so I'm sure BF could make great audios out of lots of the ones you mention. I'm certainly ready to put in a pre-order, whenever. Fingers crossed!

I wonder, is there a reason they couldn’t just do their own take on the New Avengers? Aside from of course perhaps rights issues and the fact it was never as popular as the original ‘60s series.

It is all about rights I think - BF can't create completely new 'Avengers' stories. Which is a real pity, because of course they could do it, brilliantly and authentically.
'The New Avengers' was my era, I would certainly like to meet up with Steed! - Purdey! -Gambit! again, on audio.

Would be something to behold in any case. Could easily tie in a crossover with their Adam Adamant range if they wanted to. Really is a shame because (as far as I know) it’s not like anyone is doing anything with the property at the moment.

I'm pretty sure Studiocanal own the copyright to both The Avengers and The New Avengers, so yes unfortunately they'd likely hit the same restrictions. There were six New Avengers novels and a number of comic strips/ short stories. However, all the novels and quite a few of the comic strips were adaptations of TV episodes.

Lords I'm quite shocked, I thought there were literally dozens of Tara king stories in those weekly TV Comics. Have all the Comic strips from TV Comic now been adapted then? How sad if that's it for the BF Avengers. I'd love the four Cathy Gale stories to be adapted, and of course the novel.
Update: There were 28 different stories for Tara in TV Comic ! ...And 10 for Emma Peel (9 in the TV Comics and 1 in TV Comic Annual).
So its not for a lack of material if this is it for the range !!

For some reason I thought there were 11 Emma stories in the weekly comic strips plus another 3 which appeared in TV Comics annuals and summer specials, but I can't find my source for that so maybe I double counted in my earlier list!

Well if the range has indeed finished then maybe it's due to poor sales, there is certainly enough material to keep it going.

There is also The Saga Of Happy Valley novel by Geoff Barlow, an unofficial bootleg item that was only released in Australia. Rather unusually, despite its unofficial nature and defiance of the copyright laws, it was allowed to remain on sale.

The Avengers: Conic Strip Adaptations Volume 05: Steed & Tara King - Mother’s Day I really don’t want this story to finish because it’s the last one in this volume - and what a treat! Wadham and Woodward excel as Steed and Tara King on audio. The stories fair crackle with energy and excitement and really capture the flavour of the original series while delivering their own style. It’s utterly joyful to have Christopher Benjamin’s Mother with his ever present (and long-suffering) Rhonda. This is as strong as any of the other volumes in the series and it’s leaving me wanting more - much more - in the future. Has it actually been confirmed anywhere that Vol 5 is the end of the range?

I truly cant confirm or deny anything, but after recently having the chance to interview Samuel Clemens(the director) for my podcast, he said they would love to do more, and that is a sentiment shared by many at Big Finish. I think its all a matter of trying to figure out what is next for The Avengers on audio.
