What are your favorite unconventional, obscure, weird Christmas movies and specials? These could be odd sub genres like Christmas horror or action or perhaps these are kind of obscure or a guilty pleasure or just anything that makes it odd or unique.
Mine (in no particular order):
Nightmare Before Christmas: what could be better than a movie that combines your two favorite holidays! Also love the dark whimsical atmosphere and songs! Did I mention one of my first crush’s on a fictional character was Jack Skellington(his voice is rather sexy)!
Gremlins: It’s playful dark and whimsical!
Scrooged: unconventional darkly comedic modern adaptation of A Christmas Carol!
The Hogfather: wonderful Terry Pratchett festive miniseries! Also one of the best versions of the Grim Reaper!
Box of Delights: Bizarre, creepy and magical Christmas miniseries staring Patrick Troughton as a mysterious Punch and Judy man! I randomly discovered this on YouTube!
A Christmas Carol (1971):Extremely atmospheric animated adaptation staring Alister Sim! Also discovered this on YouTube! youtu.be/iN6IMZFwY50
Last Christmas( Doctor Who): Creepy, mind bending, heartbreaking/ heartwarming and deeply romantic (especially the ending)!
Pee-wee Herman’s Christmas Special: Loved this growing up!
How Murray Saved Christmas: Tonally bizarre animated special about a grumpy diner owner who lives in a town called Stinky Cigar where all the holiday icons live and is forced to fill in for Santa.
Father Christmas (English version): I love this unconventional grumpy down to earth take on Santa! English version is better though! They unfortunately changed the voice to sound more posh and censored the American version. Brilliant special!
The Greatest Store in the World: Kind of a guilty pleasure for having Peter Capaldi as a put upon grumpy department store door man named Mr. Whiskers, for his over the top facial hair ( kind of wish of he shaved it off at the end when he had his redemption arch but I suppose you can’t have everything). Also it’s a cute story about a family who move into a department store but with cheesy annoying pop star cameo.
The Nutcracker: Which version? Any version, I have been obsessed with the Nutcracker since I was little! It’s an enormous guilty pleasure for me! The story itself is a somewhat dark and whimsical beauty and the beast style fairytale which ticks all the boxes for me!
